Muslims in the United States: An Exploratory Study of Universal and Mental Health Values

The authors surveyed the universal and mental health values of 121 Muslims in the United States and their counseling preferences. The respondents were generally well educated and highly religious. They responded high in the universal values of benevolence and conformity; low in power, hedonism, and stimulation; and high in many humanistic mental health values. A comparison with typical counselor values showed both similarities and differences. A substantial minority indicated a willingness to go to a non-Muslim counselor but most would want a counselor with an understanding of Islam. Implications for counseling practice and future research are discussed.     

Positive Affectivity as a Moderator of the Objective-Task Characteristics/Perceived-Task Characteristics Relationship

Data from a randomized experimental study were used to examine whether the dispositions of negative affectivity (NA) and positive affectivity (PA) moderated the relationships between task enrichment, task perceptions (job scope), and task satisfaction. Participants performed tasks that were low, moderate, or high in terms of enrichment. Results of regression analyses show that the task-enrichment manipulations explained a greater proportion of variance in job scope and task satisfaction than did the dispositions. Furthermore, PA, but not NA, moderated the relationship between task enrichment and job scope. Consistent with previous theory and research, our findings suggest that dispositions may play a role in individuals' perceptions of situational characteristics, but only when such characteristics are ambiguous.     

AFFECT,SYMPTOM, FANTASY,DREAM: CLINICAL AND THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS

A symptom being studied in the process of analysis can be seen as not unlike the unconscious affect it sprang from. The author presents a case in which a symptom, premature ejaculation, was analogous to the unconscious affect of guilt, which itself seemed to be a premature defensive transformation of a deeper current of anger. Guilt was interpreted as if it were a psychic premature ejaculation, a defensive derailment of anger. Fantasy and dream seemed to be engaged in similar transformations, with a fantasy of “premature incarceration” not unlike the symptom itself in its analogous functioning. Analysis of affect, symptom, fantasy, and dream in complex, integrative analytic process led not only to resolution of the symptom itself, but also to a deeper understanding of the mind's complex functioning in general.     

INSIGHT AGONISTES: A READING OF SOPHOCLES'S OEDIPUS THE KING

In this reading of Sophocles's Oedipus the King, the author suggests that insight can be thought of as the main protagonist of the tragedy. He personifies this depiction of insight, calling it Insight Agonistes, as if it were the sole conflicted character on the stage, albeit masquerading at times as several other characters, including gods, sphinxes, and oracles. This psychoanalytic reading of the text lends itself to an analogy between psychoanalytic process and Sophocles's tragic hero. The author views insight as always transgressing against, always at war with a conservative, societal, or intrapsychic chorus of structured elements. A clinical vignette is presented to illustrate this view of insight.     

THE ENCHANTMENTS OF MAMMON: NOTES TOWARD A THEOLOGICAL HISTORY OF CAPITALISM

Tales of “disenchantment” dominate modern intellectual life, and especially accounts of the cultural history of capitalism. Yet Weberian sociology, and especially Marxist notions of “commodity fetishism”, point to the persistence of “enchantment” in the capitalist imagination. If we reformulate these notions of “enchantment” and “disenchantment” in theological terms of sacrament, then we can write new histories of capitalism, as well as articulate new forms of political and cultural criticism. Borrowing from “radical orthodoxy”, the author takes a Cook's Tour of “disenchantment”, explores the possibilities afforded by “sacramental” conceptions of materialism, and gestures toward an account of American cultural history shaped by a sacramental materialism.     

SELECTION INTERVIEW DECISIONS: FIRST RESULTS FROM A LONG-TERM RESEARCH PROJECT

Recent reviews of the literature have pointed out the need for additional knowledge of the decision-making process as it occurs in the selection interview. The present paper reports the first results from a long-term project designed to investigate this process in a life insurance context. These results provided valuable information on which additional work could be based. The research presently being undertaken is briefly described and discussed.
