Teasing,rejection, and violence: Case studies of the school shootings

Media commentators have suggested that recent school shootings were precipitated by social rejection, but no empirical research has examined this claim. Case studies were conducted of 15 school shootings between 1995 and 2001 to examine the possible role of social rejection in school violence. Acute or chronic rejection—in the form of ostracism, bullying, and/or romantic rejection—was present in all but two of the incidents. In addition, the shooters tended to be characterized by one or more of three other risk factors—an interest in firearms or bombs, a fascination with death or Satanism, or psychological problems involving depression, impulse control, or sadistic tendencies. The authors investigate Freud's concepts of transference, transference neurosis and their mutual relationship. They discuss the current criticism made on the concept of transference neurosis and raise the question, why patients accept the analyst's interpretations? They suggest understanding transference neurosis as conscious manifestations of transference referring to the analyst which are the outcome of successive interpretations of the type "just-like" followed, changed, and removed again by "just-like-it-was"-interpretations. They conclude that the patient does accept these interpretations not for reasons that are rational, but for reasons pertaining the transference situation.

Female defiance is described in association with girls’ development during the anal phase in which aggression and eroticism are closely connected to the physical inner world. For women, for mothers and daughters, destructive phantasies and aggressive emotions can be such tabus that they remain unconscious as well as the associated guilt. Defiance is therefore sustained as a more or less socially accepted compromise in these moral conflicts and acts as a means of separation from inner and outer authorities.     

A cognitive footprint in archival data: Generalizing the dilution effect from laboratory to field settings

This paper delineates a bridging strategy for generalizing a theoretical proposition about human judgment from laboratory to field settings. This strategy encompasses experimental and archival methods, emphasizing each method’s complementary rather than competitive advantage. Basic experiments that use generic tasks and settings, and novice subjects, contribute empirical tests that maximize internal validity. Given a target area in the “real world” for generalizing the proposition, applied experiments that use tasks and settings with greater mundane realism, and professional subjects from the target area, contribute replicating tests that balance internal and external validity. As a complement to experimentation, archival research adds value by testing observable implications of the proposition in field settings. We relate the bridging strategy to judgment research on the dilution effect (i.e., the presence of nondiagnostic cues, when processed with diagnostic cues, causes judges to under-weigh the diagnostic cues) in psychology and applied areas. Finally, we contribute an archival data analysis that uncovers indirect evidence, or a cognitive footprint, of the dilution effect in a professional judgment setting where social and economic mechanisms potentially discipline systematic error.     

Ambulante Gruppenpsychotherapie von Müttern mit psychosomatischen Erkrankungen

Zusammenfassung Nach einem Überblick über die Literatur zu den unterschiedlichen Faktoren, die die mütterliche Gesundheit beeinflussen können, werden die psychotherapeutischen Behandlungskonzepte sowie die phasenspezifischen Besonderheiten der ambulanten gruppenpsychotherapeutischen Behandlung von Müttern dargestellt. Eine Zusammenfassung der Wirksamkeitsnachweise und eine kritische Diskussion der Grenzen ambulanter Gruppentherapie beschließen die Arbeit.     

Stationäre oder teilstationäre Psychotherapie?

In a pilot study we compared two groups, one of inpatients and one of day clinic patients who were treated between January 1999 and December 2001 at the Department of Psychosomatics and Psychotherapeutic Medicine in Freiburg/Germany. Both settings offer a similar, multimodal and intensive psychotherapy program on a psychodynamic background. In a first explorative data analysis (sociodemographic data, SCL-90-R, IIP-C) we studied differences in severity of initial symptomatology and differences in outcome (prae/post). Patients with anorexia nervosa and a very low weight were preferentially treated in the inpatient setting. In addition the inpatient group of patients with a somatoform disorder showed higher degrees of somatization, as compared to patients with a somatoform disorder in the day clinic. Therapeutic change with respect to psychopathology however did not differ between the two settings: both groups showed a significant improvement during the course of therapy.

This contribution provides recommendations and guidelines for the development of a Web site for psychotherapists, whereby the conception of the presentation predominates. In comparison, practical realisation and care of the site require only a relatively small effort. The way to a Web appearance is presented in seven steps. In addition, the way to deal with (unwanted) e-mail will be considered. The article is centered on clarity and practice orientation.
