Crisis Support and Coping as Mediators of Well-Being in Persons with Spinal Cord Lesion

This study aims to investigate whether crisis support and coping mediate symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in individuals with spinal cord lesions (SCL). PTSD, crisis support, and coping were assessed an average of 83 days after the injury (T1), at discharge from the rehabilitation center (T2), and an average of 121 days following discharge (T3). Sixty-nine newly injured paraplegics and tetraplegics completed the questionnaire at T1, 40 (58%) at T2, and 38 (55%) at T3. Individuals with PTSD experienced significantly lower levels of social support, and used more emotional coping than did those without PTSD. On the basis of logistic regression analyses, emotional coping and the interaction between negative response and emotional coping predicted PTSD. Emotional coping is a strong predictor of PTSD in persons with new SCL.     

Feminism, Family, and Women's Rights: A Hermeneutic Realist Perspective

In this article I apply the insights of hermeneutic realism to a practical‐theological ethics that addresses the international crisis of families and women's rights. Hermeneutic realism affirms the hermeneutic philosophy of Hans‐Georg Gadamer but enriches it with the dialectic of participation and distanciation developed by Paul Ricoeur. This approach finds a place for sciences such as evolutionary psychology within a hermeneutically informed ethic. It also points to a multidimensional model of practical reason that views it as implicitly or explicitly involving five levels—background metaphysical visions, some principle of obligation, assumptions about pervasive human tendencies and needs, assumptions about constraining social and natural environments, and assumed acceptable rules of conduct. The fruitfulness of this multidimensional view of practical reason is then demonstrated by applying it to practical‐theological ethics and the analysis of four theorists of women's rights—Martha Nussbaum, Susan Moller Okin, Lisa Cahill, and Mary Ann Glendon. Finally, I illustrate the importance and limits of the visional dimension of practical reason by discussing the concept of “Africanity” in relation to the family and AIDS crisis of Eastern Africa.     

A framework for understanding the allocation of attention in location-precued discrimination

The effects of attention on visual perception are assessed in the location-precuing paradigm. First, we present a review of some current metaphors for attention and relevant data. Then, a framework is suggested that provides an interpretation of the temporal sequence of external and assumed internal processes within a location-cuing trial. Cases when a precue correctly indicates the target location (valid trials) are compared to cases when the precue directs attention to the wrong location (invalid trials) with the cue location either at fixation or peripheral to the target location. Several specific hypotheses are suggested; these concern decrements in performance on invalid trials and effects of the location of a precue. For the most part, these hypotheses are supported by data in the literature and in some new studies. A gradient-filter metaphor for attention, which includes a synthesis of ideas from the gradient model and the attention gate model, is more consistent with the data than is a spotlight metaphor.
