Thirsty rats were trained to perform one action—either lever pressing or chain pulling—for a sodium chloride solution and the other for water on a concurrent random interval schedule. When the experimental groups were tested in extinction under a sodium appetite, the instrumental action trained with the sodium solution was not performed at a significantly higher rate than that reinforced by water relative to control groups tested while thirsty. In a second experiment all animals were tested in extinction under a sodium appetite after training with either a sodium solution and water in the experimental condition or a potassium chloride solution and water in the control condition. The experimental animals chain-pulled more rapidly on test than the control rats, irrespective of whether this action was reinforced with the sodium solution or with water. These results confirm the findings of Dickinson and Nicholas (1983a) that the instrumental contingency plays little role in the irrelevant incentive effect based upon a sodium appetite.  相似文献

Conditioning an aversion to the reinforcer following instrumental training reduces performance in a subsequent extinction test. Three experiments examined whether this reinforcer-devaluation effect depends upon experience with the devalued reinforcer prior to the extinction test. In Experiments 1 and 2 thirsty rats were trained to press a lever for sucrose solution in a single session. All animals then received an injection of lithium chloride (LiCl) either immediately following the session or after a delay of 6 hr. On the next day either the sucrose solution or water was presented non-contingently either in the operant chamber without the lever present or in a separate drinking cage. In a subsequent extinction test only the animals that had received immediate LiCl and re-exposure to non-contingent sucrose pressed less than those in the delayed-LiCl control groups. Experiment 3 demonstrated that this difference depended, at least in part, on post-conditioning exposure to a contingent reinforcer. Lever pressing and chain pulling were reinforced concurrently with either a sucrose or a sodium chloride solution in a single session immediately before the administration of LiCl. All animals then received non-contingent presentations of one of the reinforcers in the absence of both manipulanda. Finally, performance of both actions was assessed in an extinction test. Re-exposure to a reinforcer produced a relative reduction in the performance of its associated action on test. These results are interpreted as evidence that the instrumental reinforcer devaluation effect depends upon a process of incentive learning.  相似文献

Three experiments analysed the effect of re-exposure to the reinforcer following aversion conditioning on instrumental performance. In the first experiment, groups of hungry and thirsty rats were trained to press a lever for sucrose, which was then followed by a single injection of lithium chloride (LiCl). On the following day, half the animals in each motivational condition received re-exposure to the sucrose solution; the remaining animals were not re-exposed. In a subsequent extinction test animals that had received re-exposure to the sucrose pressed less than animals that were not re-exposed. Moreover, the effect of re-exposure to the sucrose solution was similar following training under hunger and thirst. In the remaining studies, animals were trained to lever-press for sucrose while either hungry or thirsty. They were then injected with LiCl and re-exposed to the sucrose while either hungry or thirsty, i.e. in the same or different motivational state employed during training, or they were not re-exposed. Lever pressing was then tested in extinction in the training motivational state. As in the first experiment, re-exposure to the reinforcer after aversion conditioning enhanced the magnitude of the reinforcer devaluation effect. More importantly, re-exposure to the sucrose produced a comparable effect on instrumental performance, whether re-exposure was given under the same or different motivational state to that employed during training. These results suggest that the instrumental reinforcer devaluation effect depends upon a process of incentive learning, but that this process is not conditional upon the current motivational state of the animal.  相似文献

In order to explore the impact of potential new technologies in the area of prenatal screening, we conducted a baseline study using qualitative interviews to explore women’s attitudes and knowledge regarding current and future prenatal screening technology and methods. Three cohorts were interviewed, including healthy women without children, healthy women with healthy children, and healthy women with children who have de novo genetic disorders. This study aimed to assess the baseline understanding and attitudes of women in Western Australia. Women from each cohort demonstrated adequate knowledge of the differences between screening and diagnostic tests, but were mostly unaware of the conditions for which screening is currently available except Down syndrome. Women who had children with de novo genetic conditions were generally aware of more genetic conditions than women with or without healthy children. Most women recognised the genetic basis for the conditions mentioned. Two thirds of women understood that Down syndrome is a chromosomal condition; just one third recognised that the phenotype is variable. Most women expressed a positive attitude towards Down syndrome. Social acceptance of children with Down syndrome was commonly mentioned as a concern. While the majority of women with children supported screening for Down syndrome, they emphasised that it must be an autonomous choice. General knowledge of genetic conditions illustrated that women are exposed to diverse conditions from lived experience as well as the media.  相似文献

This article examines the validity of grandiose and vulnerable subtypes of narcissistic character styles through an analysis of personality disorder criteria, interpersonal problems, and adult attachment styles in a nonclinical population. The grandiose personalities in this sample were rated high in the dramatic traits associated with narcissistic, antisocial, and histrionic personality disorders based on a diagnostic interview, and they reported domineering and vindictive interpersonal problems. However, despite the observation of narcissistic personality pathology, they denied interpersonal distress related to their interpersonal problems and the majority reported adult attachment styles reflective of positive self-representations (Secure, Dismissive). Vulnerable narcissistic individuals were represented by high ratings on avoidant personality disorder based on a diagnostic interview. They reported high interpersonal distress and greater domineering, vindictive, cold, and socially avoidant interpersonal problems. The majority reported adult attachment styles reflective of negative self-representations (Fearful, Preoccupied). The validity of grandiose and vulnerable narcissism based upon the results of this study was discussed in terms of clinical theory and with reference to the implications of two subtypes of narcissism for diagnosis and treatment.  相似文献

Two experiments examined whether food-storing scrub jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens) could remember when they cached particular food items as well as what they cached and where. In Experiment 1, scrub jays cached and recovered perishable "wax worms" (wax moth larvae) and nonperishable peanuts in 2 visuospatially distinct and trial-unique trays. The birds searched preferentially for fresh wax worms if they had cached them 4 hr earlier but rapidly learned to search for peanuts and avoid decayed wax worms that had been cached 124 hr previously. This pattern also was observed when the food items were removed before recovery on test trials. These results were replicated in Experiment 2 using a procedure in which both types of food were cached in different sides of the same caching tray: On the basis of a single, trial-unique experience, scrub jays could remember the relative time of caching as well as what type of food was cached in each cache site.  相似文献
