The current study investigates the relationship between social support and mental and physical health. Results indicate that
poor functional support (or quality of support) is related to physical health problems while structural support (or social
network size) is not. Moreover, although both poor functional and structural support are related to depression and anxiety,
functional support is more strongly related to these outcome variables, the strongest relationship being associated with depression.
Depression and hostility are also related to social isolation, although the relationship is again stronger for depression.
The results suggest that the quality of social relationships is more important than quantity for optimal mental and physical
health. The clinical relevance of these findings is that the quality of social support in the lives of individuals is central
to recovery and should be addressed in medical and mental health treatment planning whenever it is an etiological or maintaining
factor.

This study examines the stress experienced by working women in terms of politics, lack of career progress, and work/home conflicts, the symptoms of distress and satisfaction associated with these stressors, and the organizational resources available for managing these demands. Subjects were 195 female personnel professionals. A different pattern of results emerged for politics and lack of career progress in contrast to work/home conflicts. Specifically, politics and lack of career progress were associated with greater strain symptoms and reduced satisfaction, and organizational resources were associated with lower levels of these stressors. Work/home conflicts were associated with greater strain symptoms, but were unrelated to satisfaction and organizational resources. This suggests that organizations identify the most effective targets of their resources to achieve beneficial results. 相似文献

We investigated the use of social skills groups to facilitate increased social interactions for students with autism and their nonhandicapped peers in an integrated first-grade classroom. Social skills groups consisted of training students and peers in initiating, responding, and keeping interactions going; greeting others and conversing on a variety of topics; giving and accepting compliments; taking turns and sharing; asking for help and helping others; and including others in activities. Training occurred during the first 10 min of 20-min play groups, four times per week. Using a multiple baseline across subjects design, results demonstrated increases in the frequency of, time engaged in, and duration of social interactions, as well as the responsivity of students and peers to each other. Results were maintained when students were monitored and given feedback on social performance in play groups and during follow-up. 相似文献

In order to add to the body of research that examines the phenomenon of vicarious posttraumatic growth, this study sought to illuminate the lived experiences of mental health professionals who work on a day-to-day basis with multiply traumatized children and adolescents and, as a result, experience measurably high levels of vicarious trauma and compassion satisfaction. Given the lack of empirically supported treatments available for adolescents with eating disorders, it is important to investigate the clinical utility of extending treatments for adults with eating disorders to younger populations. Dialectical behavior therapy for binge eating disorder, based on the affect-regulation model, conceptualizes binge eating as a behavioral attempt to influence, change, or control painful emotional states. With promising research findings in adult women, it is of clinical interest whether the dialectical behavior therapy for binge eating disorder treatment manual could be usefully adapted for an adolescent population. This report describes adolescent-specific modifications (including the use of family sessions) to standard dialectical behavior therapy for binge eating disorder, with an illustrative case study. While more rigorous case studies are needed prior to establishing justification for a randomized trial, this pilot case provides preliminary support for a modified version of dialectical behavior therapy for binge eating disorder as a therapeutic option for adolescents with binge eating disorder. 相似文献

This study uses dialectical theory to explore the interaction of worker identity (perceived financial need and job/career
identity) and intensive mothering expectations in mothers’ identity construction. This study is based on extensive interviews
with 98 at-home, part-time employed and full-time employed mothers of one or more pre-school children from the Midwestern
United States. The narrative analysis reveals that mothers embrace intensive mothering expectations. Because of these cultural
expectations, mothers must modify either societal mothering expectations or worker expectations in order to construct an integrated
worker–mother identity. We found that while at-home mothers can embrace intensive mothering expectations, employed mothers
engage in cognitive acrobatics to manage the tension between employment and the dominant mothering ideology.

We evaluated the effects of concurrent schedules of reinforcement on negatively reinforced problem behavior and task completion with 3 children with autism. Results indicated that problem behavior occurred at high levels and relatively few tasks were completed when problem behavior produced a break (from tasks) and task completion produced either no consequence or a break. By contrast, problem behavior was eliminated and tasks were completed when problem behavior produced a break and task completion produced a break with access to preferred activities. Treatment gains were maintained without the use of extinction when the response requirement was increased and the schedule of reinforcement was thinned. 相似文献

We investigated whether young English–French biliterate children can distinguish between English and French orthographic patterns. Children in French immersion programs were asked to play a dictionary game when they were in Grade 2 and again when they were in Grade 3. They were shown pseudowords that contained either an English spelling pattern or a French spelling pattern, and they were asked to decide whether each pseudoword should go in an English dictionary or a French dictionary if it became a real word. Comparison groups of monolingual English children, monolingual French children, and English–French bilingual university students were also tested on the task. French immersion students in both grades were above chance in discriminating between the two types of pseudowords but were well below adult performance on the task. Measures obtained in kindergarten showed that early print knowledge had some ability to predict later ability to discriminate between the orthographic patterns of the two languages. Further analyses indicated that exposure to print in each language in Grades 1 to 3 was strongly related to discrimination performance. The findings are interpreted as being consistent with the statistical learning hypothesis. 相似文献
