Dialogue and Synthesis: Developing Consensus in Visitor Research Methodology

ABSTRACT

This brief synthesis presents the main points of agreement between Dawson and Jensen's article, “‘Towards a ‘Contextual Turn’ in Visitor Studies: Evaluating Visitor Segmentation and Identity-Related Motivations” (this issue) and Falk's reply, “Contextualizing Falk's Identity-Related Visitor Motivation Model” (this issue), and it highlights important considerations for future research.     

TEMNE-ARUNTA HAND-EYE DOMINANCE AND COGNITIVE STYLE

L'A. approche le phénomène de la latéralisation à travers un modèle théorique combinant dominance cérébrale et conformité culturelle. Le taux d'incidence de gaucherie dans une société particulière résulterait de l'interaction du potentiel génétique de latéralisation (dominance hémisphérique) et des pressions culturelles vers la conformité. Une étude interculturelle de ces variables, effectuée sur des sujets Temne (Sierra Leone) et Arunta (Australie), confirme le modèle proposé: on observe, en effet, 3.4 % de gauchers chez les Temne, agriculteurs et conformistes, tandis qu'apparaît un pourcentage significativement supérieur (10.5) chez les chasseurs Arunta dont la socialisation est plus permissive. En outre, sur 247 femmes appartenant à trois sociétés rurales, on n'a relevé aucun cas de gaucherie, ce qui confirme la thèse de Barry et al. (1957) concernant les pressions conformistes plus fortes envers les femmes au sein des communautés rurales. Les résultats des comparaisons interculturelles de la dominance manuelle et oculaire vont dans le sens des découvertes antérieures. Ainsi, le pourcentage de sujets à dominance croisée (main droite-?il gauche) atteint chez les Temne le chiffre attendu de 25 à 33%. Enfin, l'A. montre que, comme prévu, les sujets Temne à dominance croisée sont, du point de vue du style cognitif, significativement plus dépendants du champ que les sujets à latéralisation parallèle (main droite-?il droit).     

Associations between parental gendered attitudes and behaviours and children’s gender development across middle childhood

The present study used a longitudinal, multi-informant approach to examine which specific elements of parents’ gendered attitudes and behaviours were predictive of multiple dimensions of children’s gender development. One hundred and six families with two children (older sibling M = 7.45 years and younger sibling M = 5.19 years at Time 1) were assessed at two time points four to five years apart. At Time 1, parents reported on division of household labour, their own gender-role attitudes (GRAs), and children’s gendered preferences. At Time 2, children reported on their gendered preferences, GRAs and gendered personality traits. Results from multilevel modelling showed that fathers’ egalitarian GRA and egalitarian division of household tasks were predictive of egalitarian child GRA and outcomes, but child sex did not moderate these relationships. As some gender measures were more strongly correlated than others, these findings highlight the importance of examining multiple dimensions of both children’s and parents’ gendered attitudes and behaviours.     

The Social and Communal Aspects of Urban Spirituality: See-Judge-Act and the urban context

With reference to the urban context and the pastoral method of See-Judge-Act, this article explores the social and communal aspects of Christian spirituality. Subsequent to introductory remarks concerning urban passivity and privatised spirituality, the See-Judge-Act method is contextualised with reference to community experiences in Anfield, Liverpool. The contribution of See-Judge-Act to the development of an urban spirituality is further explored through the themes of spiritual depth and self-esteem. The work concludes that a relevant and vibrant urban spirituality must be grounded within 'contemplation-as-reflection-upon-everyday-experience'.
