The authors proposed and tested a model of fable comprehension and appreciation. They proposed that fables are metaphoric in that they teach moral lessons about human activity, and that apprehension of the moral derives from a belief in a just world. In Study 1, children from kindergarten to 8th grade and college students received Aesop fables, reversed-outcome Aesop fables, and fable-like stories. As predicted, kindergartners and some 1st graders did not demonstrate a belief in a just world and did not differentiate between normal and reversed-outcome Aesop fables. Quality of morals provided by older participants was superior to that of younger participants. In Study 2, the quality of fable moral was found to be significantly correlated with quality of proverb and metaphor interpretation. Also, memory for goal or intention story elements was found to be related to quality of moral produced. Directions for future research are identified.  相似文献

In an experiment designed to elicit restrictive relatives clauses, 28 children ranging in age from 2:2 to 3:10 provided a corpus of communicatively appropriate relative clauses. In evaluating this corpus, we found that most children produced mostly adult relative clauses most of the time. Detailed study of these utterances uncovered a few error patterns, which we analyzed in light of several considerations (e.g., the overall frequency of an error type, its distribution across children and items, its relation to the construction under study, and the similarity of the error to what children do elsewhere). Only one error pattern, namely some children's production of inappropriate relative pronouns, is argued to reflect a systematic feature of language development. We conclude that children's ability to represent the syntactic structure of the embedded clause is on target very early.  相似文献

A long theoretical tradition has linked guilt with internalizing disorders. We find no evidence, however, that a greater personality proclivity for guilt is related to depression or eating disturbances as reported by 85 female undergraduates. Females also described guilt-producing incidents involving school versus eating and exercise. We examined reactions to the events including guilt feelings and perceived effectiveness in alleviating these feelings, intropunitive responses, action tendencies, and rationalizations. Both depression and eating disturbances were unrelated to guilt feelings over school, but were related to guilt feelings over eating and exercise. Ineffective alleviation of guilt feelings in both domains was correlated with depression and greater eating disturbances. Women who reacted to guilt-producing events with fewer intropunitive responses such as rumination and self-hatred, and by confiding in others, distancing, and rationalizing their actions through justifications and excuses were less likely to have eating disturbances.  相似文献

The present study is the first to directly compare numerical representations of positive numbers, negative numbers and unit fractions. The results show that negative numbers and unit fractions were not represented in the same way. Distance effects were found when positive numbers were compared with fractions but not when they were compared with negative numbers, thus suggesting that unit fractions but not negative numbers were represented on the number line with positive numbers. As indicated by the semantic congruity effect, negative numbers were perceived to be small, positive numbers were perceived as large, while unit fractions were perceived neither as large nor small. Comparisons between negative numbers were faster than between unit fractions, possibly due to the smaller differences between the holistic magnitudes of the unit fractions. Finally, comparing unit fractions to 1 was faster than comparing them to 0, consistent with the idea that unit fractions are perceived as entities smaller than 1 (Kallai & Tzelgov, 2009). The results are consistent with the idea of a mental division between numbers that represent a quantity (positive numbers and unit fractions) and those that do not (negative numbers).  相似文献

Several investigators have expressed concern that the imminent automation of air traffic control may have negative consequences on cognitive functioning, and ultimately on performance. We investigated these possibilities empirically by comparing normal, conventional air traffic control with an experimental condition designed to resemble an extreme version of automation. Overall, measures of performance were comparable between conditions. Most of the cognitive measures (attentional demands, visual search, recall of flights, recall of flight data) were not impaired by the automation analogue. Instead, two prospective measures (prospective memory, planning) showed improved performance. The prospective memory advantage is particularly surprising given that the automation-analogue group was unable to manipulate external memory aids. Possible reasons for the prospective memory advantage include a reduced workload, which allows the controller to get the necessary information in other ways, and a change in the nature of the task resulting from the “automation” of the strip management module.  相似文献

Antisocial behavior and substance misuse are forms of problem behavior demonstrating considerable continuity over time. Accordingly, problem behavior influences interpersonal contexts across the life course, which may result in the replication of coercive interactions and a problem behavior lifestyle within romantic relationships. Furthermore, theories of self-selection, and associated research, suggest that individuals pick companions compatible with, and supportive of, their behavior, leading to high levels of similarity between romantic partners and the potential reinforcement of problem behavior over time. However, some research suggests that romantic relationships may play a positive role and facilitate desistance from problem behavior. The purpose of this paper is to explore how antisocial behavior and substance use both influence and are influenced by romantic relationships in late adolescence and early adulthood. We first review research regarding the extent of, and processes underlying, partner similarity in problem behavior. Next, we examine how romantic relationships may promote the desistance of problem behavior. Finally, we discuss possible moderators of the association between problem behavior and romantic relationships, as well as limitations, intergenerational implications, and recommended future directions of the reviewed research.  相似文献

Automatic processing of 2-digit numbers was demonstrated using the size congruency effect (SiCE). The SiCE indicates the processing of the irrelevant (numerical) dimension when 2 digits differing both numerically and physically are compared on the relevant (physical) dimension. The SiCE was affected by the compatibility between unit and decade digits but was unaffected by the global magnitude of the numbers. Together these results suggest automatic processing of the magnitudes of the components of the 2-digit numbers but not of whole numbers. Finally, the SiCE was affected more by the magnitude of the decade digits compared with the unit digits, indicating that the syntactic roles of the digits were represented. The implications of these results for understanding the numerical representations are discussed.  相似文献

One of the aspects of autism that is often held up as a hallmark of the disorder is a desire for sameness. Students with autism often show a marked lack of variability in language and play skills. The same behavioral patterns are repeated perseveratively, rather than attempting new patterns. In the current study, students diagnosed with autism were taught to self‐manage varied responding. Using a multiple baseline design, three children with autism were taught to self‐monitor and then to self‐manage in order to increase variability in play and social language. All three students demonstrated marked increases in variability during self‐management phases. These gains were maintained at one month follow‐up. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The study examined student evaluations (N?=?221) of frequency and impact of negative interpersonal behaviors by academic faculty and other students. As expected, negative behaviors by faculty was rated as less frequent but as more upsetting than those carried out by fellow students. The impact of such behaviors was not affected by the setting in which they occurred. However, students with a strong power motivation perceived negative behaviors by faculty as more upsetting than did students with a weak power motivation. The findings highlight the importance of covert restrictions on the exploitation of the potential power intrinsic in paternalistic relationships.  相似文献
