Consulting with faculty: necessary and possible

Through case and program consultation with counselors, faculty can become more effective in helping troubled students. In this article the authors offer examples of counseling agency consultation with faculty individuals and groups. They identify and evaluate conditions that inhibit consultation as well as circumstances that facilitate it, with the view that effective use of consultation may affect the future development of university counseling services.     

A generalist counselor in industry

The professional counselor can develop a viable function in the industrial setting, but it may not entail the highly specialized role of the traditional model. From the vantage point of an experimental position in a blue-collar business, such factors as role versatility, geographic mobility, flexibility in methodology, and interdepartmental team building are considered in initiating an unusual program. The first year's results are described and evaluated. The program seeks to bring all corporate resources and personnel to bear on satisfying any kind of human need. The main thesis is that the need of the client should determine the role of the counselor.     

The Widget Syndrome

There has been a recent tendency in Manpower to view human services in mechanistic terms. This tends to cause an emphasis on large numbers of transactions as a guide to effectiveness. An alternative method of evaluating manpower services is offered.     

Placement Outcomes Of Counseled Applicants

Several questions were investigated regarding the placement rates of counseled and uncounseled employment security applicants. A random sample of 221 inactive application cards was drawn from 12 employment security district offices. Comparisons were made between the counseled and uncounseled groups. It was found that counseled applicants typically had more employability barriers than did those who had not received counseling. Regardless of that fact, the placement rate of counseled applicants was almost twice that of the uncounseled. In general, as the number of counseling interviews increased there was a corresponding increase in the placement rate. This relationship was consistent with a variety of applicant groups.     

Behavior consultation in a barrio high school

Behavioral consultation with a counselor was used in this study to help an English teacher in an inner-city high school deal with his students' “lackadaisical” attitude toward the completion of assignments. Over a period of weeks, the behavioral approaches that were experimented with were found to facilitate the changes that the teacher had hoped for.     

Tools and Techniques for Diagnosis and Evaluation in Marital and Family Therapy

This is a slightly edited version of a chapter to appear in a forthcoming book. ¹ It is a beginning attempt at codification of existing tools and techniques and is therefore nonexhaustive. The authors welcome feedback from readers concerning omissions and information on new techniques, references, and applicability to therapeutic settings.     

The Response Maze: A Training and Evaluation Tool or Porteus' Complaint

An adaptation of the “Action Maze”—a problem situation requiring manager trainees to choose between alternative courses of action, each of which leads to a new situation with new alternatives—is proposed for training counselors. Advantages and limitations of this adaptation, entitled the “Response Maze,” are enumerated, possible other uses of the technique are considered, suggestions for constructing such a maze are offered, and a sample Response Maze for readers is included.     

Developing Coordinated Technical Assistance and Training Programs

The design of a coordinated, multi-level technical assistance and training system is crucial to the delivery of manpower services under CETA. A framework for the development of such a system, together with tentative roles and responsibilities for its implementation are presented.     

An Examination of Service Concepts and Leisure Activity

Recently, occupational researchers have emphasized the need to examine both work and leisure activities as complementary components for total individual self-fulfillment. This research examined the complementary relationships between vocational and avocational pursuits in a study of a single occupation. Since the occupation was service and community based and emphasized social responsibility and relating to others, these were the primary vocational constructs examined. These variables were related to leisure variables and the resulting relationships were examined. A profile relating vocational and avocational aspects for a particular occupation was postulated.     

Visual control of locomotion

Abstract.— How is locomotion controlled? What information is necessary and how is it used? It is first of all argued that the classical twofold division of information into ex-teroceptive and proprioceptive is inadequate and confusing, that three fundamental types of information need to be distinguished and that the information is used in a continual process of formulating locomotor programs, monitoring their execution and adjusting them. The paper goes on to show (1) how steering could be controlled on the basis of the “locomotor flow line” in the optic array, which specifies the potential future course, whether curved or straight, and (2) how stopping for an obstacle could be controlled simply on the basis of the information in the optic array about the time-to-collision and its rate of change. The problems inherent in pedestrian locomotion of controlling footing and balance are discussed and an investigation of visual locomotor programming in the long jump reported.
