A Theory-Based Empirical Classification of Family Problem-Solving Behavior

A method for classifying family interaction behavior is presented that underlies several related studies of variation in families' modes of interpreting and interacting with the social environment. Evidence is presented for the existence of three dimensions of family problem-solving behavior that: (a) are consistent with theory of variation in families' orientations to the environment; (b) are useful for interpreting differences within nonclinical as well as clinical samples of families; and (c) have been shown, within current samples' ranges, to be essentially independent of surface markers of family variation and accumulated skills of family members.     

THE USE OF FUNCTIONAL JOB ANALYSIS IN ESTABLISHING PERFORMANCE STANDARDS FOR HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATORS

Research recently completed for a large international craft union provided the opportunity for an empirical assessment of functional job analysis (FJA) as a method for developing job-related performance standards. Based on content-oriented test development procedures, work sample tests were developed to measure operator achievement of these training standards. According to the results the tests significantly differentiated between skill levels of operating engineers in which the significant criterion factor was the degree of independence and autonomy the operator could be permitted in doing the work. FJA proved to be a useful technique for defining the work of operating engineers so that the knowledges, skills and abilities required can be easily communicated to the courts and the public.     

Unraveling Religious Disaffiliation: The Meaning and Significance of Falling From the Faith in Contemporary Society

This article calls for placing what are termed affiliation and disaffiliation on equal footing in the study of religious expression. Recent developments suggest the importance of understanding disaffiliation as well as affiliation. Among the most important issues that must be addressed are adequately conceptualizing disaffiliation and developing a useful way of modeling the disaffiliation process. This article reviews and synthesizes existing research as a means of formulating an agenda for further work in this area.     

Consultation: A New Strategy For CETA

Program changes inherent in the CETA concept have markedly decreased the effectiveness of previous program management and liaison strategies. Some reasons for this decrease and a new set of skills for working at the interface between prime sponsors and subcontractors and/or the regional offices are presented. These skills, formulated within a consultation model and based on solid behavioral strategies, are one way to increase CETA program effectiveness.     

Consulting with faculty: necessary and possible

Through case and program consultation with counselors, faculty can become more effective in helping troubled students. In this article the authors offer examples of counseling agency consultation with faculty individuals and groups. They identify and evaluate conditions that inhibit consultation as well as circumstances that facilitate it, with the view that effective use of consultation may affect the future development of university counseling services.     

A generalist counselor in industry

The professional counselor can develop a viable function in the industrial setting, but it may not entail the highly specialized role of the traditional model. From the vantage point of an experimental position in a blue-collar business, such factors as role versatility, geographic mobility, flexibility in methodology, and interdepartmental team building are considered in initiating an unusual program. The first year's results are described and evaluated. The program seeks to bring all corporate resources and personnel to bear on satisfying any kind of human need. The main thesis is that the need of the client should determine the role of the counselor.
