High-density EEG was recorded in 12 compensated dyslexics, 6 classified as dysphonetic and 6 as dyseidetic, and in 12 matched controls while they carried out a lexical-decision task. Relative to normal controls, dysphonetics showed higher beta power in anterior relative to posterior regions, while dyseidetics showed higher beta power in posterior relative to anterior regions. Further, controls (but not dyslexics) showed a positive correlation between performance on the task and the ratios of both left-to-right and anterior-to-posterior beta asymmetry. According to the dual-route theory of reading, there are two strategies that can be used in lexical decision: A visual strategy involving visual word identification and direct access to a visual lexicon, and a phonological strategy involving grapheme-to-phoneme conversion and access to a speech output lexicon. Our results therefore suggest compensation through weakness rather than strength, with phonological dyslexics focusing on a grapheme-to-phoneme strategy and dyseidetics focusing on visual word identification. 相似文献

Subjects were timed as they decided whether singly presented probe words belonged to one or the other of two memorized lists, or to neither list. Each list varied in length from one to four words. Reaction times increased linearly with the combined number of words in the two lists. When there was no a priori basis for distinguishing the lists, the slope of the function for positive test probes was 33–35 msec per word higher than that for negative probes. The slope for negative probes was 58 msec per word in one experiment and 46 msec per word in another. This suggests that subjects first scanned the combined lists exhaustively to determine whether the probe was present; if it was not, they made a negative response, and if it was, they scanned again to determine which list it was in. When the words in the two lists were conceptually distinct (one list representing animate and the other inanimate objects), the difference in slope was reduced to only 6 msec per word, suggesting that the second scan was all but eliminated. 相似文献

Eleven subjects were timed as they judged whether a small bar perpendicular to one side of a clockhand would point left or right if the hand was pointing upward (i.e., at the "12 o'clock" position). The clockhand was shown in two successive orientations 30 degrees apart, so that it was perceived to jump from one to the other in either a clockwise or a counterclockwise direction. Reaction times were consistent with the interpretation that the subjects "mentally rotated" the clockhand from its perceived orientation back to the upright before making their decisions. The direction of the jump influenced perceived orientation but did not influence either the direction or rate of mental rotation itself. 相似文献

Subjects attempted to identify singly presented letters, flashed briefly at six different locations equidistant from fixation. The locations were at 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 o’clock on an imaginary circle. The subjects performed both with their heads upright or tilted 60° (i.e., through 2 and 8 o’clock or through 10 and 4 o’clock). In Experiment 1, the letters were projected in a gravitationally fixed rectangular surround, and accuracy of report depended largely on the locations of the letters in gravitational coordinates, although there was clear evidence of a retinal influence as well. In Experiment 2, the surround was circular and accuracy depended principally on retinal location, although there was also a gravitational influence. Analysis of individual data suggested that, when their heads were tilted, subjects generally adopted a reference frame which lay between the retinal and gravitational frames, closer to one than the other but typically coinciding with neither. We conclude that the subjective reference frame does not depend on a poststimulus correction, but rather that stimulus information is incorporated directly into the subjective frame. The data also suggested that lateral asymmetries depend on a perceptual rather than a retinal interpretation of left and right visual fields. 相似文献

I argue that the phylogenetic and neurobiological bases for cerebral asymmetry in humans are likely to be found in motor systems rather than in perceptual systems. Current genetic models of human laterality suggest that a `dextral' allele might be responsible for right-handedness and left-cerebral dominance for speech in the majority of humans. The linking of handedness with language lateralization might reflect the early evolution of language as predominantly a system of manual gestures, perhaps switching to a mainly vocal system only with the emergence of Homo sapiens. So-called `mirror neurons' in the prefrontal cortex of the monkey, which fire both when the animal makes a grasping response and when it sees the same response performed by others, might be part of a circuit that is the precursor to language circuits in the brain. This circuit appears to be bilateral in monkeys, but left-hemispheric in humans. 相似文献

Language anomalies and left-hemisphere dysfunction are commonly reported in schizophrenia. Additional evidence also suggests differences in the integration of information between the hemispheres. Bilateral gain is the increase in accuracy and decrease in latency that occurs when identical information is presented simultaneously to both hemispheres. This study measured bilateral gain in controls (n=20) and individuals with schizophrenia (n=10) using a lexical-decision task where word or non-word judgements were made to letter strings presented in the left visual field (LVF), right visual field (RVF) or bilaterally (BVF). Language was not abnormally lateralized in the schizophrenia group. Controls exhibited the expected decrease in latency when words were presented bilaterally. This effect was not observed in the schizophrenia group who were actually disadvantaged in this condition. The lack of bilateral gain in schizophrenia is discussed as arising from differences in the connections between areas in each hemisphere that mediate language. 相似文献

In three experiments, subjects were timed as they judged whether stimuli, presented in different angular orientations, represented clockwise or counterclockwise directions. In each experiment, there was also a control condition in which the subjects were required to make mirror image judgments relative to some canonical orientation. Analysis of reaction times suggested that, in the control tasks, the subjects generally rotated the stimuli mentally to the canonical orientation before making their decision. Mental rotation was invoked less frequently in the case of the experimental tasks, suggesting at least limited access to an orientation-free code representing the difference between clockwise and counterclockwise. This was most evident in Experiment 1, where the stimuli represented 1-h jumps of a hand on a clock face. It was less so in Experiment 2, where direction of motion was indicated in a static display. In Experiment 3, only a few subjects proved able to use an orientation-free, clockwise versus counterclockwise rubric in order to discriminate normal from backward letters. 相似文献

Several episodic simulation studies have suggested that the plausibility of future events may be influenced by the disparateness of the details comprising the event. However, no study had directly investigated this idea. In the current study, we designed a novel episodic combination paradigm that varied the disparateness of details through a social sphere manipulation. Participants recalled memory details from three different social spheres. Details were recombined either within spheres or across spheres to create detail sets for which participants imagined future events in a second session. Across-sphere events were rated as significantly less plausible than within-sphere events and were remembered less often. The presented paradigm, which increases control over the disparateness of details in future event simulations, may be useful for future studies concerned with the similarity of the simulations to previous events and its plausibility. 相似文献
