Fifty-one healthy elderly subjects (median age = 65) gave retrospective estimates of nightmare frequency in questionnaires and recorded the occurrence of nightmares in daily logs over a 2-week period. (a) Mean annual nightmare frequency as estimated from logs was only 65% as high among college student controls. (b) Elderly subjects were about 1/5 as likely as college students to report a problem with nightmares. The Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines as revised (DIB-R) for use with children and chart review was completed using the records of 54 children, ages 6 to 12 years, who had been admitted to a public psychiatric hospital. Based on the results of the DIB-R, the children were grouped as borderline and nonborderline. The two groups were then compared with regard to 52 independent variables which have historically been associated with the borderline diagnosis. Stepwise logistic regression was used to identify the cluster of diagnostic and independent variables which best discriminated the borderline subjects. Self-destructive behavior, irritable affect, anhedonia, and an externalizing disorder diagnosis at the time of admission accounted for 95.4% of the borderline children. These findings are in contrast to previous studies which have found an assortment of neuropsychological and/or neurological deficits and stressed the importance of a tendency toward psychotic regression on psychological testing as discriminative variables. The authors underscore the idea that borderline pathology may represent a spectrum of disorders and the need for a more specific psychiatric nosology in describing and diagnosing these children. 相似文献

This paper first reviews briefly the literature on the acoustics of infant cry sounds and then presents two empirical studies on the perception of cry and noncry sounds in their social-communicative context. Acoustic analysis of cry sounds has undergone dramatic changes in the last 35 years, including the introduction of more than a hundred different acoustic measures. The study of cry acoustics, however, remains largely focused on neonates who have various medical problems or are at risk for developmental delays. Relatively little is known about how cry sounds and cry perception change developmentally, or about how they compare with noncry sounds. The data presented here support the notion that both auditory and visual information are important in caregivers' interpretations of infant sounds in naturalistic contexts. When only auditory information is available (Study 1), cry sounds become generally more recognizable from 3 to 12 months of age; perception of noncry sounds, however, generally does not change over age. When auditory and visual information contradict each other (Study 2), adults tend to perform at chance levels, with a few interesting exceptions. It is suggested that broadening studies of acoustic analysis and perception to include both cry and noncry sounds should increase our understanding of the development of communication in infancy. Finally, we suggest that examining the cry in its developmental context holds great possibility for delineating the factors that underlie adults' responses to crying. 相似文献

This study focused on the impact of stimulus presentation format in the gating paradigm with age. Two presentation formats were employed—the standard, successive format and a duration-blocked one, in which gates from word onset were blocked by duration (i.e., gates for the same word were not temporally adjacent). In Experiment 1, the effect of presentation format on adults’ recognition was assessed as a function of response format (written vs. oral). In Experiment 2, the effect of presentation format on kindergarteners’, first graders’, and adults’ recognition was assessed with an oral response format only. Performance was typically poorer for the successive format than for the duration-blocked one. The role of response perseveration and negative feedback in producing this effect is considered, as is the effect of word frequency and cohort size on recognition. Although the successive format yields a conservative picture of recognition, presentation format did not have a markedly different effect across the three age levels studied. Thus, the gating paradigm would seem to be an appropriate one for making developmental comparisons of spoken word recognition. 相似文献

Despite growing evidence that depression is linked with self-focused attention, little is known about how depressed individuals become self-focused or, more generally, about what arouses self-focus in everyday life. Two experiments examined the hypothesis that affect itself induces self-focused attention. In Experiment 1, moods were manipulated with an imagination mood-induction procedure. Sad-induction Ss became higher in self-focus than did neutral-induction Ss. Experiment 2 replicated this effect for sad moods by means of a musical mood-induction procedure and different measures of self-focus. However, Experiment 2 failed to support the hypothesis that happy moods induce self-focus. The results have implications for mood-induction research, self-focused attention, and recent models of depression. 相似文献

One hundred and fifteen adults with well-documented childhood reading status underwent a series of neuropsychological tests including tests of memory, attention, phonological processing, and visual perceptual skills in an attempt to define the neuropsychological profile of dyslexia in adulthood. Compared to a normal nonreading disabled sample, subjects with a history of reading disability performed consistently poorer on most neuropsychological tests. However, after covarying for intelligence and socioeconomic status, only tests of rapid naming, phonological awareness, and nonword reading were significant discriminating measures. The hypothesis that deficits in phonological processing comprise the core cognitive deficits in adults with a history of reading disability was supported. Independent of current adult reading ability, measures of nonword reading, phonological awareness, and rapid naming serve as indicators of a childhood history of reading disability. 相似文献

Individual differences in the effects of pharmacological and behavioural manipulations on slow cortical potentials (SCP), may reflect personality differences in type of informational control under attentional stress. Two experiments were conducted to examine SCP component differences in extraverts and introverts under different attentional tasks and with and without nicotine smoking ‘stressor’ conditions. In an initial experiment a decrease in late negativity for introverts and an increase in late negativity for extraverts suggested that smoking enhanced introverts' stimulus set and extraverts' motor set. In a second experiment, personality differences in SCP were examined again, but within a signal-detection paradigm, which allows separate assessment of the contribution of sensory sensitivity and response bias factors to performance. Smoking increased sensitivity in both personality groups, but response bias (caution) increased in introverts only. Extraverts showed an increase in central negativity during smoking whilst introverts showed a decrease in negativity and a decrease in positive wave components. The results are explained in terms of a motor model of attentional control whereby smoking regulates inhibitory controlled actions in introverts, but activates general motor processes for extraverts. 相似文献

Fixed-ratio food-reinforced responding in rats was studied alone and with concurrent shock avoidance or with concurrent response-independent shocks matched to those that occurred in the avoidance condition. Under each condition, fixed-ratio size was increased over successive daily sessions. Fixed-ratio response rate generally passed through a maximum as a function of fixed-ratio size. Decreased fixed-ratio responding at values beyond the maximum occurred when (1) the time to complete a fixed ratio approximated the response-shock interval of the avoidance schedule, (2) the shock rate increased, and/or (3) the ratio requirements were so high that ratio strain occurred. Avoidance rates decreased slightly as fixed-ratio size increased. 相似文献
