Harvey's cognitive model of insomnia (2002a) proposes that sleep-related safety behaviors play a central role in the maintenance of insomnia because such maladaptive coping strategies are thought to reinforce threat-based appraisals of the likelihood and consequences of poor sleep. Research to date has assessed the frequency of safety behavior use in those with insomnia only; however, in addition to the frequency of occurrence, the function of safety behaviors (i.e., a belief that they will prevent a feared outcome from occurring), may be an important consideration. The purpose of this study was to examine sleep-related safety behaviors based on an expanded theoretical understanding of such behaviors across psychological disorders; that is, by examining both their frequency and perceived utility. Undergraduate students (N = 376) completed an online survey about their sleep, mood, and use of sleep-related safety behaviors. Insomnia severity was associated with a greater perceived need to use safety behaviors (i.e., utility) but not with frequency of safety behavior use. Higher perceived utility of safety behaviors was also associated with unhelpful beliefs about sleep, fear and avoidance of fatigue, and both general and sleep-specific helplessness. These results suggest that these behaviors and the associated underlying maladaptive beliefs may be important targets in cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia. The current study extends the existing literature and refines the concept of safety behaviors in insomnia to include both the function and frequency of these behaviors. 相似文献

Successful social interactions rely on the ability to make accurate judgments based on social cues as well as the ability to control the influence of internal or external affective information on those judgments. Prior research suggests that individuals with schizophrenia misinterpret social stimuli and this misinterpretation contributes to impaired social functioning. We tested the hypothesis that for people with schizophrenia, social judgments are abnormally influenced by affective information. Twenty-three patients with schizophrenia and 35 healthy control participants rated the trustworthiness of faces following the presentation of neutral, negative (threat-related), or positive affective primes. Results showed that all participants rated faces following negative affective primes as less trustworthy than faces following neutral or positive primes. Importantly, this effect was significantly more pronounced for participants with schizophrenia, suggesting that schizophrenia may be characterized by an exaggerated influence of negative affective information on social judgment. Furthermore, the extent that the negative affective prime influenced trustworthiness judgments was significantly associated with patients' severity of positive symptoms, particularly feelings of persecution. These findings suggest that for people with schizophrenia, negative affective information contributes to an interpretive bias, consistent with paranoid ideation, when judging the trustworthiness of others. This bias may contribute to social impairments in schizophrenia. 相似文献

This paper follows the circuitous path of theories concerning the origins of viruses from the early years of the twentieth
century until the present, considering RNA viruses in particular. I focus on three periods during which new understandings
of the nature of viruses guided the construction and reconstruction of origin hypotheses. During the first part of the twentieth
century, viruses were mostly viewed from within the framework of bacteriology and the discussion of origin centered on the
“degenerative” or the “retrograde evolution theory.” However, concomitantly, in the context of origin-of-life theorizing,
the notion that viruses are vestiges of a prebiotic world was also being contemplated. In the 1960s the idea that viruses
were genetic elements that “escaped” from cells became prevalent. These traditional hypotheses are being revisited nowadays
by evolutionary virologists, who have placed them within a new conceptual framework that is supported by cutting-edge genomic
and proteomic data. Two current, opposing scenarios of virus origin are presented. The philosophical dimensions of “revisiting”
the original hypotheses are briefly discussed. 相似文献

With its diverse cultural and linguistic profile, South Africa provides a unique context to explore contextual influences
on the process of genetic counseling. Prior research suggests intergenerational differences regarding models of causation
which influence treatment-seeking paths. This pilot study therefore aimed to explore South African traditional beliefs regarding
common childhood genetic disorders. Three focus groups were conducted with fifteen grandmothers from different cultural backgrounds
in an urban community. Questions pertained to the role of the grandmother, traditional beliefs regarding causes of genetic
disorders, explanations of heredity, and prevention and management of genetic disorders. Results indicate a variety of cultural
explanations for causes of childhood genetic disorders. These causes can be classified into categories related to lifestyle,
behavior, social issues, culture, religion, genetic, and familial causes. Prevention and treatment issues are also highlighted.
These findings have implications for genetic counseling practice, which needs to include a greater focus on cultural issues. 相似文献

The current longitudinal study explores the relationship between adolescent television use at time 1 and sexual experience
and relationship status (i.e., committed/romantic versus casual) 1 year later. The sample (N = 824) comprised youth aged 14–18. Multinomial logistic regressions predicting group membership from television exposure
variables were conducted controlling for socio-demographic characteristics and prior sexual behavior. Results indicate that
sexually inexperienced youth watched more television overall than sexually experienced youth, but less adult, premium and
music television on cable networks. Premium cable exposure predicted group membership among sexually active youth. Youth who
watched more premium cable at time 1 were more likely to be in casual relationship at last intercourse than a committed one.
A more complete understanding of media effects on adolescent sexual relationships can help guide policy development, media
education/literacy efforts, and contribute to the design of interventions to reduce the negative consequences associated with
adolescent sexual behavior. 相似文献

Novice drivers (teen drivers with their solo license for 6 months or less) are at a greatly inflated risk of crashing. Post hoc analyses of police accident reports indicate that novice drivers fail to anticipate hazards, manage their speed, and maintain attention. These skills are much too broadly defined to be of much help in training. Recently, however, driving simulators have been used to identify those skills which differentiate the novice drivers from older, more experienced drivers in the areas of hazard anticipation and speed management. Below, we report an experiment on a driving simulator which compares novice and experienced drivers’ performance in the third area believed to contribute especially heavily to crashes among novice drivers: attention to the forward roadway. The results indicate that novice drivers are much more willing to glance for long periods of time inside the vehicle than are experienced drivers. Interestingly, the results also indicate that both novice and experienced drivers spend equal amounts of time glancing at tasks external to the vehicle and in the periphery. Moreover, just as a program has been designed to train the scanning skills that clearly differentiate novice from experienced drivers, one might hope that a training program could be designed to improve the attention maintenance skills of novice drivers. We report on the initial piloting of just such a training program. Finally, we address a question that has long been debated in the literature: Do the results from driving simulators generalize to the real world? We argue that in the case of hazard anticipation, speed management, and attention maintenance the answer is yes. 相似文献

A feminist phenomenological analysis of voice, rooted in both the feminist understanding of the role of voice in identity,
agency, and the creation of meaning, and the phenomenological thematization and theorization of phenomenal, lived experience,
leads to a deeper understanding of the importance of the materiality of the voices with which we speak, and their role in
both subjective and intersubjective experience. Starting from an analysis of the intertwined associations and imageries of
the feminine, voice, and embodiment, I discuss the denaturalization and abstraction of voice in standard narratives of voice
and voice metaphorization, and the corresponding forgetting of the living, bodily voice. In looking to recall a re-naturalized
and immanent corporeality and retrieve the material voice through an account of embodied vocality, I consider examples of
the power and immediacy of the corporeal voice in the female operatic voice, and in contrast, the compromised agency and attenuated
(inter)subjectivity which attends the impaired or lost physical voice. These vocal counterpoints of presence and absence are
often separated by corporeal disturbance or limitation, underscoring the importance of corporeality and the material voice
as intermediary between the individual and the social world. This sets the contours of a phenomenology of embodied voice and
vocality, holding implications for accounts of identity and intersubjectivity, gendered vocality and expressive agency, and
an intercorporeality mediated by the living material voice. 相似文献

Do 18-month-olds understand that an agent's false belief can be corrected by an appropriate, though not an inappropriate, communication? In Experiment 1, infants watched a series of events involving two agents, a ball, and two containers: a box and a cup. To start, agent1 played with the ball and then hid it in the box, while agent2 looked on. Next, in agent1's absence, agent2 moved the ball from the box to the cup. When agent1 returned, agent2 told her "The ball is in the cup!" (informative-intervention condition) or "I like the cup!" (uninformative-intervention condition). During test, agent1 reached for either the box (box event) or the cup (cup event). In the informative-intervention condition, infants who saw the box event looked reliably longer than those who saw the cup event; in the uninformative-intervention condition, the reverse pattern was found. These results suggest that infants expected agent1's false belief about the ball's location to be corrected when she was told "The ball is in the cup!", but not "I like the cup!". In Experiment 2, agent2 simply pointed to the ball's new location, and infants again expected agent1's false belief to be corrected. These and control results provide additional evidence that infants in the second year of life can attribute false beliefs to agents. In addition, the results suggest that by 18 months of age infants expect agents' false beliefs to be corrected by relevant communications involving words or gestures. 相似文献
