PLE: A high-level multiprogramming language for psychology

This paper describes a software system called PLE that is designed to turn a Data General Corporation computer system into a sophisticated infinite-channel tachistoscope. We describe hardware and software characteristics of the PLE system and evaluate its performance in comparison to a typical tachistoscope. Additionally, we describe two example experiments that have been implemented in the PLE system.     

Microprocessors in the laboratory: Dedicated computation and time-shared peripherals with REMOTE-11

This article describes a new solution to the dilemma faced by investigators who need dedicated computers but cannot afford the cost of expensive peripherals. An available software-hardware combination is described that permits users to timeshare expensive peripherals but to have a dedicated microprocessor at their disposal.     

Interacting with inter ACT

A patch for making ACT loadable by RDOS and a program that makes ACT program tapes compatible with editors available from the computer manufacturer are described. These two facilities allow greater ease in loading ACT and modifying ACT programs.     

A system for the assessment of human performance in concurrent verbal and manual control tasks

A multipurpose laboratory system incorporating a voice interactive terminal and graphic display system is described. The facility is designed to investigate some aspects of human performance on concurrent verbal and tracking tasks. The results of a pilot study showing decrements in dual-task performance are reported.     

Treatment of obsessive-compulsive patients: The contribution of self-instructional training to the effectiveness of exposure

Fifteen obsessive-compulsive patients were given treatment consisting of ten sessions of gradual exposure in vivo. For half of the patients gradual exposure in vivo was preceded by self-instructional training.Treatment resulted in significant improvement on anxiety and avoidance scales, Leyton Obsessional Inventory, Self-rating Depression Scale and on ratings for anxious mood and depression. Neither the post-test nor the follow-ups 1 month and 6 months later indicated a difference between the effects of the two conditions. Self-instructional training did not enhance the effectiveness of gradual exposure in vivo.
