Skill Domains Critical to the Helping Professions*

A theoretical and empirical study of professional education in the human service disciplines is described. Seven highly generalizable, cognitive, and affective skill domains are postulated as broad goals worthy of incorporating into such programs. Data are analyzed from several groups of helping professionals (N = 240). These persons perceive all the skill domains to be required for effective professional practice and to be relatively teachable. Excepting basic professional-technical skill areas, these persons are less sure that such competencies should be used as criteria for selection and evaluation of students and certain the skill areas are not presently used in this manner. The existence of this paradox bodes ill for efforts to establish affective curricular goals.     

Evidence for direct visual access to letter identities

Subjects were presented with two letters from the set BCDFGHLNPORTVZ, one in upper case and one in lower case. Subjects were required to decide, as quickly as possible, whether the two letters on each trial were the same (e.g., Bb) or different (e.g., Bd). Because letters were always physically different, subjects presumably must name the letters in order to respond. Reaction times were predicted by the visual similarity of the letters, and not by their phonemic distinctive feature similarity. Consistent with previous work showing that a word's meaning can be assessed directly from visual information, the findings suggest that visual analysis of a capital or small letter can result in knowing the latter name without further linguistic processing. These results were interpreted as an example of automatic detection as described by Schneider and Shiffrin (1977).     

Delayed neurotoxicity associated with therapy for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia

Most children diagnosed today with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) will be cured. However, treatment entails risk of neurotoxicity, causing deficits in neurocognitive function that can persist in the years after treatment is completed. Many of the components of leukemia therapy can contribute to adverse neurologic sequelae, including craniospinal irradiation, nucleoside analogs, corticosteroids, and antifolates. In this review, we describe the characteristic radiographic findings and neurocognitive deficits seen among survivors of childhood ALL. We summarize what is known about the pathophysiology of delayed treatment-related neurotoxicity, with a focus on the toxicity resulting from pharmacologic disruption of folate physiology within the central nervous system. Finally, we suggest testable strategies to ameliorate the symptoms of treatment-related neurotoxicity or decrease its incidence.     

Internationalism in psychology: we need it now more than ever

A concern with international cooperation in psychology has been present since the beginnings of psychology as a science. In this article, the author traces the development of international cooperation from the late 19th century to the present day to document the interesting ways in which the forms of collaboration have always been related to the large social and political contexts of which they are a part. This historical material is followed by an autobiographical account of the author's own involvement in cooperative international research to illustrate how such activity can play out. A few selected collaborative enterprises are then described to emphasize the point that psychology stands to benefit enormously from continued international cooperation, especially in times of international conflict such as that being experienced at the present time. The longitudinal structure of the Children's Depression Inventory: testing a latent trait-state model

In a 6-wave longitudinal study, children (Grades 4-6, n = 648), adolescents (Grades 7-9, n = 1,489), and their parents completed child-adolescent or parent versions of the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI; M. Kovacs, 1981). Using structural equation modeling, the authors conducted latent trait-state analyses to distinguish between a stable trait dimension of depression (in which individual differences are stable over time) and an autoregressive dimension (in which individual differences are less stable over time). Children's CDIs reflected the autoregressive dimension more than a stable trait dimension, whereas parents' CDIs reflected a stable trait dimension more than an autoregressive dimension. Reports from adolescents and their parents reflected a stable trait dimension more than an autoregressive dimension of depressive symptoms. Results suggest that the longitudinal structure of the CDI varies considerably depending on the age of the target and the type of informant.     

Cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis: Cephalopoda) hunting behavior and associative learning

Because most learning studies in cephalopods have been performed on octopods, it remains unclear whether such abilities are specific to octopus, or whether they correlate with having a larger and more centrally organized brain. To investigate associative learning in a different cephalopod, six sexually mature cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) participated in a counterbalanced, within-subjects, appetitive, classical conditioning procedure. Two plastic spheres (conditioned stimuli, CSs), differing in brightness, were presented sequentially. Presentation of the CS+ was followed 5 s later by a live feeder fish (unconditioned stimulus, US). Cuttlefish began to attack the CS+ with the same type of food-acquisition seizures used to capture the feeder fish. After seven blocks of training (42 presentations of each CS) the difference in seizure probability between CS+ and CS– trials more than doubled; and was found to be significantly higher in late versus early blocks. These results indicate that cuttlefish exhibit autoshaping under some conditions. A CROSS-CULTURAL INVESTIGATION OF INFORMATION PROCESSING1

Recherche interculturell sur le traitement de l'information. — Cette expérience fait partie d'une série d'études sur les processus cognitifs des membres de la tribu des Kpelles du Liberia : elle porte plus particulièrement sur Pestimation des quantités. A 240 sujets (120 Kpelles et 120 Américains) on a présenté, à l'aide d'un tachistoscope, des plages de points avec des durées variées d'exposition. Les plages diffèrent par le nombre (de 3 à 10) et la disposition, structurée ou aléatoire, des points. La performance des sujets américains est en général supérieure à celle des Kpelles. l'analyse montre que l'avantage global des américains est dû à : — 1) leur plus grande exactitude pour les plages qui comportent plus de points; — 2) leur plus grande exactitude relative pour des durées brèves de présentation; — 3) l'utilisation plus grande de la redondance inhérente aux plages structurées. Les AA, pensent pouvoir mettre ces résultats en relation avec les apprentissages différentiels dont chaque groupe culturel a pu faire l'expérience dans son milieu propre. Ils proposent une stratégic générale pour mener des recherches expérimentales interculturelles.     

The homophile movement: Its impact and implications

Conclusion We do not conclude that homosexuality must be accepted by society. We do hope that society's attitudes towards homosexuals can be more intelligent, less confused. Perhaps our society will reject homosexuality on a basis of manifestly conscious prejudice of the majority who simply find it distasteful; but at least this will be more honest than many current rationalizations. Perhaps it will be possible and desirable because of changing conditions to accept homosexuality in our culture at some future time. Any sincere effort to confront the issues raised by homosexuality in our culture will be rewarded with a deeper understanding of many other aspects of human life.Presented to One Inc., Los Angeles, May 7, 1967.
