In this paper, we seek to re-conceptualize the ethical framework through which ethicists and medical professionals view the practice of live kidney donations. The ethics of organ donation has been understood primarily within the framework of individual rights and impartiality, but we show that the ethic of care captures the moral situation of live kidney donations in a more coherent and comprehensive way, and offers guidance for practitioners that is more attentive to the actual moral transactions among donors and recipients. The association between developmental trajectories of language‐related white matter fiber pathways from 6 to 24 months of age and individual differences in language production at 24 months of age was investigated. The splenium of the corpus callosum, a fiber pathway projecting through the posterior hub of the default mode network to occipital visual areas, was examined as well as pathways implicated in language function in the mature brain, including the arcuate fasciculi, uncinate fasciculi, and inferior longitudinal fasciculi. The hypothesis that the development of neural circuitry supporting domain‐general orienting skills would relate to later language performance was tested in a large sample of typically developing infants. The present study included 77 infants with diffusion weighted MRI scans at 6, 12 and 24 months and language assessment at 24 months. The rate of change in splenium development varied significantly as a function of language production, such that children with greater change in fractional anisotropy (FA) from 6 to 24 months produced more words at 24 months. Contrary to findings from older children and adults, significant associations between language production and FA in the arcuate, uncinate, or left inferior longitudinal fasciculi were not observed. The current study highlights the importance of tracing brain development trajectories from infancy to fully elucidate emerging brain–behavior associations while also emphasizing the role of the splenium as a key node in the structural network that supports the acquisition of spoken language. 相似文献

In the present research, we asked whether pigeons tended to judge time intervals not only in terms of their absolute value
but also relative to a duration from which they must be discriminated (i.e., longer or shorter). Pigeons were trained on two
independent temporal discriminations. In one discrimination, sample durations of 2 and 8 sec were associated with, for example,
red and green hue comparisons, respectively, and in the other discrimination, sample durations of 4 and 16 sec were associated
with vertical and horizontal line comparisons, respectively. If pigeons are trained on a temporal discrimination and tested
with intermediate durations, the subjective midpoint typically occurs close to the geometric mean of the two trained values.
The 4- and 8-sec values were selected to be the geometric mean of the two values in the other discrimination. When a 4-sec
test sample was presented with the comparisons from the 2- and 8-sec discrimination, the pigeons preferred the comparison
associated with the shorter sample. Similarly, when an 8-sec test sample was presented with the comparisons from the 4-and
16-sec discrimination, the pigeons preferred the comparison associated with the longer sample. Thus, a relative grouping effect
was found. That is, durations that should have produced indifferent choice were influenced by their relative durations (shorter

The early stages of colour coding are well established in that the trichromatic receptor stage is followed by a set of opponent colour channels. One interpretation of the sequence is that opponent channels carry unrelated aspects of the colour stimulus, unlike the cone channels. The overlap of the cone channels can be removed by decorrelating their spectral-sensitivity functions, and this procedure has been found to give opponent colour channels which match those found psychophysically. Since the known spatial-frequency channels also show considerable overlap, the question arises which aspects of the spatial stimulus are captured by decorrelating the spatial-frequency channels. The results of decorrelating the spatial-frequency channels are that the first decorrelated spatial filter acts as a broad bandpass filter which has a peak sensitivity at 7.9 cycles deg-1, and that the second decorrelated spatial filter acts as an opponent spatial-frequency channel, with a minimum output at a low (4.1 cycles deg-1) spatial frequency and a maximum output at a high (15.1 cycles deg-1) spatial frequency. The characteristics of the first decorrelated filter closely resemble the properties of the foveal perceptive field which have been used to explain the Hermann grid illusion. Thus, the decorrelation analysis produces a model for the functional organisation of the channel implementation at the neural and psychophysical levels, but which directly relates to the subjective appearance of the visual stimuli. 相似文献

It has been proposed that memory for personal experiences (episodic memory, rather than semantic memory) relies on the conscious review of past experience and thus is unique to humans. In an attempt to demonstrate episodic-like memory in animals, we first trained pigeons to respond to the (nonverbal) question "Did you just peck or did you just refrain from pecking?" by training them on a symbolic matching task with differential responding required to the two line-orientation samples and reinforcing the choice of a red comparison if they had pecked and the choice of a green comparison if they had not pecked. Then, in Experiment 1, after providing the conditions for (but not requiring) the pigeons to peck at one new stimulus (a yellow hue) but not at another (a blue hue), we tested them with the new hue stimuli and the red and green comparisons. In Experiment 2, we tested the pigeons with novel stimuli (a circle, which they spontaneously pecked, and a dark response key, which they did not peck) and the red and green comparisons. In both experiments, pigeons chose the comparison appropriate to the response made to the test stimulus. Thus, the pigeons demonstrated that they could remember specific details about their past experiences, a result consistent with the notion that they have the capacity for forming episodic-like memories. 相似文献

Evidence from videotapes of experts thinking aloud is presented which documents the spontaneous use of analogies in scientific problem solving. Four processes appear to be important in using an analogy: (1) generating the analogy; (2) establishing confidence in the validity of the analogy relation; (3) understanding the analogous case; and (4) applying findings to the original problem. This study concentrates on process (1). Evidence was found for three different methods of analogy generation: generation via a principle (1 case), generation via an association (8 cases), and generation via a transformation (18 cases). Although the mechanism underlying analogy generation is usually described as an association process, transformation processes, where the subject modifies or transforms some aspect of the original problem, may be just as important if not more important. In contrast to the usual view of an analogous case as already residing in memory, several of the analogous cases were quite novel, indicating that they were newly invented Gedanken experiments. The usefulness of some analogies appears to lie in a "provocative" function of activating additional knowledge schemas that is different from the commonly cited "direct transfer" function where established knowledge is transferred fairly directly from the analogous to the original case. 相似文献
