Hegel's Critique of Fichte in the 1802/3 Essay on Natural Right

This paper provides a reconstruction and critical assessment of Hegel's critique of Fichte's political philosophy in his 1802/3 essay On the Scientific Ways of Treating Natural Right. I argue that Hegel's critique, while not entirely successful, raises a serious problem for Fichte's political philosophy as presented in the 1796/7 Foundations of Natural Right.     

The Ismaili sect in London: Religious institutions and social change

The Ismailis in London are a community attempting to adapt the stock of Ismaili theoretical concepts to the explanation and control of events in a changed and changing social situation. This article is concerned with assessing the role of Ismaili religious institutions in this process of adaptation. It will be argued that because the Ismaili belief system emphasizes the irrelevant and transitory nature of Ismaili religious institutions, the true role, paradoxically, of these religious institutions is preserved, and as a consequence they remain relevant to Ismailis.     

Resurrecting the tracking theories

Much of contemporary epistemology proceeds on the assumption that tracking theories of knowledge, such as those of Dretske and Nozick, are dead. The word on the street is that Kripke and others killed these theories with their counterexamples, and that epistemology must move in a new direction as a result. In this paper we defend the tracking theories against purportedly deadly objections. We detect life in the tracking theories, despite what we perceive to be a premature burial.     

The impact of gender ideology on the performance of gender-congruent citizenship behaviors

Because organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) performance contributes to overall performance ratings and failure to perform expected behaviors detracts from performance ratings, it is important to examine whether men and women perform OCBs in stereotypically expected ways. Published studies have evidenced both a presence and an absence of gender differences in OCB performance. With a view to explaining this ambiguity, this article reports the results of a study examining gender ideology as a moderator of the effects of gender on the performance of gender-congruent OCBs (i.e., helping for women and civic virtue for men). Survey data from participants and their coworkers across a wide range of jobs and organizations revealed that gender ideology moderated the effects of gender on the performance of gender-congruent OCBs.     

The Impact of Social Anxiety on Occupational Participation in College Life

Social anxiety is a reality for many college students. This study explored the impact of social anxiety on the occupational participation in daily life of six Irish students. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore participants’ daily routines, coping mechanisms, and interaction with the environment. The study aims to inform occupational therapists, academics, and other healthcare professionals of the impact of the condition on the daily life of college students. Qualitative data analysis showed that participants described negative beliefs about themselves and had concerns about how they were perceived by others. This affected their ability to fully participate in the student role.     

“The Ravens Paradox” is a misnomer

I argue that the standard Bayesian solution to the ravens paradox— generally accepted as the most successful solution to the paradox—is insufficiently general. I give an instance of the paradox which is not solved by the standard Bayesian solution. I defend a new, more general solution, which is compatible with the Bayesian account of confirmation. As a solution to the paradox, I argue that the ravens hypothesis ought not to be held equivalent to its contrapositive; more interestingly, I argue that how we formally represent hypotheses ought to vary with the context of inquiry. This explains why the paradox is compelling, while dealing with standard objections to holding hypotheses inequivalent to their contrapositives.     

Culturally Focused Community‐Centered Service Learning: An International Cultural Immersion Experience

An immersion training model is described that incorporates culturally focused community‐centered service in South Africa as an experiential learning approach. Recommendations for developing international cultural immersion training with a goal of developing cultural competencies are suggested. Se describe un modelo formativo de inmersión que incorpora servicios culturalmente enfocados centrados en la comunidad en Sudáfrica como una aproximación experimental de aprendizaje. Se sugieren recomendaciones para desarrollar programas formativos de inmersión cultural con el objetivo de desarollar competencias culturales.     

An integrative model of safety climate: Linking psychological climate and work attitudes to individual safety outcomes using meta‐analysis

Meta‐analytic path analysis was utilised to test an integrative model linking perceived safety climate to hypothesized organisational antecedents and individual outcomes. Psychological climate, especially the perception of organisational attributes, was found to be significantly associated with safety climate (both constructs measured at the individual level). A partial mediation model was supported. Within this model, the relationship between safety climate and safety behaviour was partially mediated by work‐related attitudes (organisational commitment and job satisfaction), and the relationship between safety climate and occupational accidents was partially mediated by both safety behaviour and general health. Safety climate acted as a partial mediator in the relationship between psychological climate and safety behaviour, with direct effects from climate perceptions relating to the leader and organisational processes. Avenues for further research and practical implications are discussed.     

Development and psychometric evaluation of a quantitative measure of “fat talk”

Based on her anthropological research, Nichter (2000) concluded that it is normative for many American girls to engage in body self-disparagement in the form of “fat talk.” The purpose of the present two studies was to develop a quantitative measure of fat talk. A series of 17 scenarios were created in which “Naomi” is talking with a female friend(s) and there is an expression of fat talk. College women respondents rated the frequency with which they would behave in a similar way as the women in each scenario. A nine-item one-factor scale was determined through principal components analysis and its scores yielded evidence of internal consistency reliability, test–retest reliability over a five-week time period, construct validity, discriminant validity, and incremental validity in that it predicted unique variance in body shame and eating disorder symptoms above and beyond other measures of self-objectification.
