A person-centred approach to stress management

Stress is analysed from a phenomenological perspective in terms of how individuals evaluate the varying stressors in their lives. The basic philosophical tenets underlying the person-centred approach to therapy are outlined with its emphasis on the ability of the individual human organisms to heal and recover from dysfunction.     

Home environment questionnaire

Psychometric and normative data are presented for two forms of the Home Environment Questionnaire (HEQ) that provide measures of 10 variables used to describe the psychosocial environments of children. One form, HEQ-2R, is suitable for use with families in which there are two parents; the other form, HEQ-1R, is for use with one-parent families. The HEQ scales are relatively independent and not significantly related to the age of the target child, and most of the scales are reasonably internally consistent. Previous research has found several of the HEQ scales to be significantly related to several dimensions of children's clinically important behavior.     

Careers education and counselling in Northern Ireland: A historical outline

Vocational guidance services have been developing in Northern Ireland for about thirty years. Recently the careers service has been transferred from an education to a manpower services base, while the schools have been given greater opportunity, and responsibility, for the provision of careers education. The changes have given considerable impetus to careers teacher training, and to the appointment of schools' careers staffs. The possibility of further development of the partnership between careers officers and careers teachers is examined.     

Covert sensitization, stimulus relevance and the equipotentiality premise

Covert sensitization and related cognitive aversive techniques have been widely used and reviewed but, to date, the issue of the quality and relevance of the aversive imagery selected has yet to be investigated. In the present study, Ss were given a target substance to consume and then presented with narratives designed to elicit either nausea, anxiety or relaxation. The nausea and anxiety scenes were rated as equally aversive but there was a significant reduction in consumption only within the taste-nausea imagery group. These results are consistent with those obtained from the study of taste aversion in infra-human Ss where taste has been shown to associate preferentially with nausea. The present results call into question the validity of the ‘equipotentiality premise’ in cognition. The implications of these findings for the clinical application and evaluation of covert sensitization are discussed.     

Social Representations of Human Rights Amongst Czech University Students

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a general legislative framework for democratic societies. Studying the social representations of these basic human rights helps to explain how people understand and assess the basic rights and how these rights relate to everyday life. Over 400 Czech university students rated the 30 articles of the Declaration of Human Rights on various scales (degree of understanding, personal relevance, consequences for individual responsibility, for government, political parties, etc.). A semantic space was identified in which concepts (i.e. the Articles of the Declaration) could be located. A typology (clusters) of articles was then established within that semantic space. A factor analysis of the scales resulted in a two-dimensional solution (‘positive attitude’ and ‘personal influence’). Five clusters of assessed articles were identified within this semantic space. Stress and reproduction: central mechanisms and sex differences in non-rodent species

Despite extensive research, the mechanisms by which stress affects reproduction are unknown. Activation of stress systems could potentially influence reproduction at any level of the hypothalamo-pituitary gonadal axis. Nonetheless, the predominant impact is on the secretion of gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) from the brain and the secretion of the gonadotrophins, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), from the gonadotrophs of the anterior pituitary gland. When stress is prolonged, it is likely that secretion of the gonadotrophins will be suppressed but the effects of acute stress or repeated acute stress are not clear. Different stressors activate different pathways for varying durations, and the actions of stress vary with sex and are influenced by the predominance of particular sex steroids in the circulation. The mechanisms by which stress influences reproduction are likely to involve complex interactions between a number of central and peripheral pathways and may be different in males and females. To understand these mechanisms, it is important to determine the stress pathways that are activated by particular stressors and to establish how these pathways affect the secretion and actions of GnRH. Furthermore, there is a need to know how stress influences the feedback actions of gonadal steroids and inhibin.
