Vann McGee's counterexample to modus ponens

Conclusion After rejecting some unjustified criticism of McGee's claim about modus ponens, I argued for two conditionals: If the Adams-Appiah theory of conditionals is correct, then modus ponens is saved from McGee's counterexample. If the Lewis-Jackson theory is correct, the same holds. Furthermore, I raised some doubts whether the antecedents of these conditionals are true. But, if one of them were, then, by modus ponens, modus ponens would be generally valid.     

Social networks and the treatment of schizophrenia

The importance of social network relations to the clinical status of schizophrenic patients is documented. The author notes that recent innovative clinical treatment programs incorporate social network concepts, although not always using such theoretical concepts. The importance of social network concepts in treatment and rehabilitation is noted.     

Looks like a liar? Beliefs about native and non-native speakers' deception

We examined whether observers' beliefs about deception were affected by a speaker's language proficiency. Laypersons (N = 105) and police officers (N = 75) indicated which nonverbal and verbal behaviors were predictive of native versus non-native speakers' deception. In addition, they provided their beliefs about these speakers' interrogation experiences. Participants believed that native and non-native speakers would exhibit the same cues to deception. However, they did predict that non-native speakers would likely face several challenges during interrogations (e.g., longer interrogations and difficulties understanding the interrogator's questions). Police officers and laypersons also differed in their beliefs about cues to deception and interrogation experiences.

Sociology and psychoanalysis in the liberal arts

Abstract

This paper posits that an infusion of psychoanalytic concepts into the teaching of sociology in undergraduate liberal arts curricula offers a route to expanding students’ understanding of how self and society are entwined in a condition of mutual crisis in contemporary society. We argue that the liberatory project at the core of the liberal arts is served well by linking the critical perspectives found in these two disciplines. We provide as specific examples from our own teaching: (1) a demonstration of how Freud’s concept of neurosis has an affinity with Marx’s concept of alienation; and (2) a discussion of how the torture sequence in Orwell’s 1984 presents an inversion of a psychoanalytic treatment through which the power of propaganda is illuminated. We conclude that teaching the two disciplines in tandem helps students grasp how the self is a socially constructed entity and how the orthodoxies of neurosis and social control are available for critique and change.
