Whether human evaluative conditioning can occur without contingency awareness has been the subject of an intense and ongoing debate for decades, troubled by a wide array of methodological difficulties. Following recent methodological innovations, the available evidence currently points to the conclusion that evaluative conditioning effects do not occur without contingency awareness. In a simulation, we demonstrate, however, that these innovations are strongly biased toward the conclusion that evaluative conditioning requires contingency awareness, confounding the measurement of contingency memory with conditioned attitudes. We adopt a process-dissociation procedure to separate the memory and attitude components. In 4 studies, the attitude parameter is validated using existing attitudes and applied to probe for contingency-unaware evaluative conditioning. A fifth experiment incorporates a time-delay manipulation confirming the dissociability of the attitude and memory components. The results indicate that evaluative conditioning can produce attitudes without conscious awareness of the contingencies. Implications for theories of evaluative conditioning and associative learning are discussed. 相似文献

The present study investigated the impact of healthy aging on the bias to learn from positive or negative performance feedback in observational and active feedback learning. In active learning, a previous study had already shown a negative learning bias in healthy seniors older than 75 years, while no bias was found for younger seniors. However, healthy aging is accompanied by a 'positivity effect', a tendency to primarily attend to stimuli with positive valence. Based on recent findings of dissociable neural mechanisms in active and observational feedback learning, the positivity effect was hypothesized to influence older participants' observational feedback learning in particular. In two separate experiments, groups of young (mean age 27) and older participants (mean age 60 years) completed an observational or active learning task designed to differentially assess positive and negative learning. Older but not younger observational learners showed a significant bias to learn better from positive than negative feedback. In accordance with previous findings, no bias was found for active learning. This pattern of results is discussed in terms of differences in the neural underpinnings of active and observational learning from performance feedback. 相似文献

Non-verbal numerical behavior in human infants, human adults, and non-human primates appears to be rooted in two distinct
mechanisms: a precise system for tracking and comparing small numbers of items simultaneously (up to 3 or 4 items) and an
approximate system for estimating numerical magnitude of a group of objects. The most striking evidence that these two mechanisms
are distinct comes from the apparent inability of young human infants and non-human primates to compare quantites across the
small (<3 or 4)/large (>4) number boundary. We ask whether this distinction is present in lower animal species more distantly
related to humans, guppies (Poecilia reticulata). We found that, like human infants and non-human primates, fish succeed at comparisons between large numbers only (5 vs.
10), succeed at comparisons between small numbers only (3 vs. 4), but systematically fail at comparisons that closely span
the small/large boundary (3 vs. 5). Furthermore, increasing the distance between the small and large number resulted in successful
discriminations (3 vs. 6, 3 vs. 7, and 3 vs. 9). This pattern of successes and failures is similar to those observed in human
infants and non-human primates to suggest that the two systems are present and functionally distinct across a wide variety

Attachment anxiety has been associated with a hyperactivating response to threat. A modified emotional Stroop task was used to investigate temporal characteristics of the threat response by assessing response latencies to interpersonally threatening words (immediate interference) and two directly subsequent neutral filler words (delayed interference). Greater immediate and delayed interference to threatening words was observed (n = 125), with higher levels of attachment anxiety associated with immediate interference to threatening cues, and lower levels with delayed interference. Thus, attachment anxiety was related to the speed at which moderate perceived threat disrupted ongoing processes under top-down attentional control. Furthermore, top-down attentional control moderated the extent to which immediate or delayed interference was observed. Among participants who demonstrated relatively stronger top-down attentional control, immediate and delayed interference to threatening cues was minimal, suggesting that results involving emotional Stroop interference were primarily attributable to participants with relatively weaker top-down attentional control. The implications of these findings are considered within the broader context of performance-based and neuroimaging research, with suggestions for future applied research. 相似文献

Previous studies provided evidence of a relationship between mental rotation (MR) and motor processes in children and adults. However, there is no direct evidence that MR ability is a reliable predictor of success for motor performance. After completion of a MR test, the motor performance of 7- to 8-year-old and 11- to 12-year-old children was measured along a steeple chase and an equivalent straight distance sprint. The chase involved several motor actions requiring, among different competencies, spatial abilities such as performing a forward roll, jumping, crawling, turning, and changing directions. Data revealed that the time taken to complete the chase was influenced by speed and sex, but also by the individual MR ability. Based on these findings, we assume that MR and motor performance may share similar subprocesses. 相似文献

In this work, we present a biologically inspired model for recognition of occluded patterns. The general architecture of the model is based on the two visual information processing pathways of the human visual system, i.e. the ventral and the dorsal pathways. The proposed hierarchically structured model consists of three parallel processing channels. The main channel learns invariant representations of the input patterns and is responsible for pattern recognition task. But, it is limited to process one pattern at a time. The direct channel represents the biologically based direct connection from the lower to the higher processing level in the human visual cortex. It computes rapid top-down pattern-specific cues to modulate processing in the other two channels. The spatial channel mimics the dorsal pathway of the visual cortex. It generates a combined saliency map of the input patterns and, later, segments the part of the map representing the occluded pattern. This segmentation process is based on our hypothesis that the dorsal pathway, in addition to encoding spatial properties, encodes the shape representations of the patterns as well. The lateral interaction between the main and the spatial channels at appropriate processing levels and top-down, pattern-specific modulation of the these two channels by the direct channel strengthen the locations and features representing the occluded pattern. Consequently, occluded patterns become focus of attention in the ventral channel and also the pattern selected for further processing along this channel for final recognition. 相似文献

It is commonly believed that during mental rotation of body parts, participants tend to imagine their own body part moving toward the stimulus, thus using an egocentric strategy. Several studies have also shown that the mental rotation of hands is affected by the actual hand position, especially if the hand is kept in an awkward position. However, this hand posture effect, as well as the use of an egocentric strategy during mental rotation of body parts, is not systematic. Several experiments have demonstrated that manipulating the stimulus features or the paradigm could induce a shift to visual and allocentric strategies. Here, we studied the effects of hand posture and biomechanical constraints on one-hand mental rotation (laterality judgment task), two-hand mental rotation (same–different judgment task), and mental rotation of one or two alphanumeric symbols (control tasks). Effects of posture and biomechanical constraints were observed solely for the laterality judgment task. Response times in the same–different hand mental rotation items were influenced by the angular disparity between the stimuli. We interpreted our result as evidence of the use of different strategies for each task. Future research should focus on disentangling the exact subprocesses in which an egocentric strategy is used, in order to propose better tests for participants with motor impairments. 相似文献
