An Attributional Analysis of Reactions to Magic Johnson1

Principles from attribution theory were used to analyze public reactions to the health status of Magic Johnson. An experimental study containing two distinct samples (college students and African-American adults) together with supplemental reports from local and national media confirm the value of this approach. The findings show that inferences about causal responsibility are related to affective reactions of sympathy and anger toward Magic Johnson. Implications for attribution theory, as well as for future attitudes toward Magic Johnson, are discussed.     

Assortative matching for sex-role and marriage adjustment

Eighty-two middle-class married couples were administered the Bem Sex-role Inventory, a newly derived Behavioral Inventory measuring sex-role by task performance and the Spanier Dyadic Adjustment Scale. It was hypothesized that individuals are assortatively matched by sex-role in marriage, that all-androgynous couples have greater marriage adjustment (MA) than stereotypic couples who are, in turn, higher than ‘other’ couples (undifferentiated or cross-type), and that there is an interaction effect with certain combinations more deleterious to MA than others. All hypotheses were supported and evidence presented that matching occured by selection rather than as a result of living together. In addition, subsequent analysis indicated that men's sex-roles are more associated with MA than women's sex-roles.     

Two models of brief group psychotherapy for herpes sufferers

The psychological consequences that often follow from contracting genital herpes fall into four general categories: sexual functioning, interpersonal relations, emotional life, and self-esteem. After detailing these, a rationale for treating genital herpes sufferers in group is offered, and then two models for the time-limited group treatment of this population are described. The first is a cognitive behavioral stress management program which has three component parts: relaxation training, rational-emotive training, and assertiveness training. The second is a dynamically oriented group in which the group focus shifts over time from the difficulties associated with the disease itself to general exploration of interpersonal styles and themes. Some comparisons between the two models are drawn.
