How do participants adapt to temporal variation of preparatory foreperiods? For reaction times, specific sequential effects have been observed. Responses become slower when the foreperiod is shorter on the current than on the previous trial. If this effect is due to changes in motor activation, it should also be visible in force of responses and in EEG measures of motor preparation, the contingent negative variation (CNV) and the lateralized readiness potential (LRP). These hypotheses were tested in a two-choice reaction task, with targets occurring 500, 1500, or 2500 ms after an acoustic warning signal. The reaction time results showed the expected pattern and were accompanied by similar effects on a fronto-central CNV and the LRP. In contrast, the increase of response force with brief current foreperiods did not depend on previous foreperiods. Thus, EEG measures confirm that sequential effects on RT are at least partially due to changes in motor activation originating from previous trials. Effects found on response force may be related to general response readiness rather than activation of motor-hand areas, which may explain the absence of a sequential effect on force in the current experiment. 相似文献
The nondeterministic relationship between speech acoustics and abstract phonemic representations imposes a challenge for listeners to maintain perceptual constancy despite the highly variable acoustic realization of speech. Talker normalization facilitates speech processing by reducing the degrees of freedom for mapping between encountered speech and phonemic representations. While this process has been proposed to facilitate the perception of ambiguous speech sounds, it is currently unknown whether talker normalization is affected by the degree of potential ambiguity in acoustic-phonemic mapping. We explored the effects of talker normalization on speech processing in a series of speeded classification paradigms, parametrically manipulating the potential for inconsistent acoustic-phonemic relationships across talkers for both consonants and vowels. Listeners identified words with varying potential acoustic-phonemic ambiguity across talkers (e.g., beet/boat vs. boot/boat) spoken by single or mixed talkers. Auditory categorization of words was always slower when listening to mixed talkers compared to a single talker, even when there was no potential acoustic ambiguity between target sounds. Moreover, the processing cost imposed by mixed talkers was greatest when words had the most potential acoustic-phonemic overlap across talkers. Models of acoustic dissimilarity between target speech sounds did not account for the pattern of results. These results suggest (a) that talker normalization incurs the greatest processing cost when disambiguating highly confusable sounds and (b) that talker normalization appears to be an obligatory component of speech perception, taking place even when the acoustic-phonemic relationships across sounds are unambiguous.
Four studies were carried out to examine how identity fusion, self‐ and group efficacy, and collective action are related and what role self‐expansion plays in these relationships. In the pilot study, participants recalled their experience of participating in mass gatherings. The three other studies were conducted during mass gatherings organized for collective purposes: a music concert (Study 1), a bicycle activist event (Study 2), and Equality Days (Study 3). The results showed (a) a significant positive relationship between personal and group identity fusion, self‐expansion, and self‐efficacy (Study 1); (b) a significant mediating effect of self‐expansion on the relationship between personal and group identity fusion and group efficacy (Studies 1 and 2); and (c) a significant mediating effect of self‐ expansion and group efficacy on the relationship between identity fusion and collective action tendency (Studies 2 and 3). 相似文献
This study investigated workplace relational connectedness qualities in terms of domestic worker employment in a South African setting. Twenty black female domestic workers were recruited through purposive respondent-driven self-sampling. Participants ranged in age from 27 to 59 years. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were used to generate the data. An interpretative phenomenological approach was used to foreground the thematic data analysis. Caring and connectedness emerged as the main theme that characterised participants’ positive employment relationships. Identified sub-themes related to participants’ experience of their employment context, work engagement and treatment, psychosocial well-being and communication. The findings are consistent with the broaden-and-build theory which proposes a positive behavioural cycle which results from reciprocal actions. 相似文献
Masked stimuli (primes) can affect the preparation of a motor response to subsequently presented target stimuli. Under some conditions, reactions to the main stimulus can be facilitated (straight priming) or inhibited (inverse priming) when preceded by a compatible prime (calling for the same response). In the majority of studies in which inverse priming was demonstrated arrows pointing left or right were used as prime and targets. There is, however, evidence that arrows are special overlearned stimuli which are processed in a favorable way. Here we report three experiments designated to test whether the "arrowness" of primes/targets is a sufficient condition for inverse priming. The results clearly show that although inverse priming appeared when non-arrow shapes were used, the magnitude of the priming effect was larger with arrows. The possible reasons for this effect are discussed. 相似文献
We examined the immediate, short- and long-term effectiveness of the SNAP™ Under 12 Outreach Project (ORP)—a community-based
program for children under the age of 12 at risk of having police contact. Sixteen pairs of children were matched on age,
sex and severity of delinquency at admission, and randomly assigned to the ORP or to a control group which received less intensive
treatment. Level of antisocial behavior was assessed pre and post intervention (immediate effects) and at three follow-up
periods (up to 15 months post treatment) to investigate maintenance of possible treatment effects. A search of criminal records
was also performed to assess long term effects. Results indicated that ORP children decreased significantly more than controls
on the Delinquency and Aggression subscales of the Child Behavior Checklist pre- to post-intervention, and these effects were
maintained over time. For statistically significant differences, effect sizes were large (.79 to 1.19). Fewer ORP children
(31%) had criminal records at follow-up compared to controls (57%), although this difference was not statistically significant.
Overall, the ORP appears to be an effective cognitive-behavioral program for antisocial children in the short term, with possible
effects that extend into adolescence and adulthood. 相似文献
Life satisfaction is a concept frequently used to measure wellbeing of older people. However, there is still a lack of cross-national
comparative research investigating factors associated with life satisfaction. There may be unique and common factors associated
with life satisfaction across European countries. This study aimed to investigate life satisfaction among people aged 60–89 years
in six European countries in relation to health problems, ADL capacity, self-esteem, social and financial resources. A cross-sectional
study was performed, including 7,699 people aged 60–89 years, in Sweden, the UK, The Netherlands, Luxemburg, Austria and Italy,
participating in the European Study of Adult Wellbeing, using questions from the Older Americans Resources and Services schedule,
Multidimensional Functional Assessment Questionnaire, Life Satisfaction Index Z and Rosenberg’s Self-esteem scale. Logistic
regression analysis was performed to determine factors associated with life satisfaction in the six national samples. In cases
where people were less satisfied with their life it was fairly satisfactory and unsatisfactory social contacts (Odds Ratio
(OR) 1.5–13.8), poor financial resources (OR 1.7–15.1), feeling greatly hindered by health problems (OR 2.2–5.4) and self-esteem
(OR 2.1–5.1) rather than the ability to perform activities of daily living and the extent of social contacts that gave the
greatest risk of low life satisfaction in all the six European countries. There were both common and country-specific factors
important for life satisfaction in the six European countries. However, the importance of satisfactory social contacts, financial
resources, self-esteem and feeling hindered by health problems seems universal in the six included countries and thus important
to target in preventive interventions. 相似文献
Previous studies investigating the ability of high priority stimuli to grab attention reached contradictory outcomes. The present study used eye tracking to examine the effect of the presence of the self-face among other faces in a visual search task in which the face identity was task-irrelevant. We assessed whether the self-face (1) received prioritized selection (2) caused a difficulty to disengage attention, and (3) whether its status as target or distractor had a differential effect. We included another highly familiar face to control whether possible effects were self-face specific or could be explained by high familiarity. We found that the self-face interfered with the search task. This was not due to a prioritized processing but rather to a difficulty to disengage attention. Crucially, this effect seemed due to the self-face’s familiarity, as similar results were obtained with the other familiar face, and was modulated by the status of the face since it was stronger for targets than for distractors. 相似文献
