The study evaluated the effectiveness of both a new anxiety management training program and a cognitive modification procedure as part of a secondary prevention effort to identify and treat test anxiety early in the academic career of college students. Subjects were 40 college freshmen who had been identified as high test-anxious in an initial mail-out survey of the Test Anxiety scale. Subjects were randomly assigned to three experimental conditions: anxiety management training, a cognitive modification procedure, and a no-treatment control group. Results indicated that both the cognitive modification and anxiety management training treatments were effective in reducing test anxiety on a posttreatment administration of the Test Anxiety scale. Especially interesting, a significant difference in academic performance emerged between treatment and control groups three semesters after treatment, underscoring the preventive value of the program.  相似文献

Memory for series of abstract graphic forms was tested using a recognition/ reconstruction procedure in two experiments with 8-9-year-old children. The children either looked at the forms and traced around each of them in turn (VT condition), or looked at the forms for an equivalent length of time and pointed to them (V condition). Memory for the forms, but not their order was improved by tracing. The mechanism responsible for this was investigated by comparing the effects of motor and visual interference interpolated between stimulus presentation and recognition testing. Motor interference was most disruptive in the VT condition while visual interference tended to be most disruptive in the V condition. These results support the proposal that tracing produces a distinct motor memory trace and that this additional source of information aids visual recognition.  相似文献

The present investigation sought to test the applicability of the excitation transfer model (P. Tannenbaum & D. Zillmann. In L. Berkowitz, Ed., Advances in experimental social psychology, Vol. 8, New York: Academic Press 1975) to prosocial behavior. This model predicts that for individuals predisposed to act prosocially, arousal transferred from an unrelated source will facilitate such behavior. Two studies were conducted in which male college students, treated in either a positive or neutral manner and shown an arousing erotic or nonarousing control film, ostensibly rewarded and punished a confederate for performance on a memory task. Contrary to predictions, the first experiment found the arousing film increased reward regardless of treatment. In the second experiment, where the neutral treatment was given a more negative tone, the predicted interaction was found. Specifically, subjects treated in a positive manner and shown an arousing film were significantly more rewarding than were similarly treated subjects shown the nonarousing film. While type of film had no effect on neutral subjects' reward behavior, the arousing film did increase their punitive behavior. These results, coupled with physiological and self-report data, strongly support the excitation transfer model.  相似文献

It has been proposed that self-directed attention leads to the engagement of a cybernetic feedback loop, by which discrepancies between present behavior and a standard of comparison are reduced. This analysis is applied to performance facilitation effects, which are more typically explained in terms of drive theories. Though these two approaches to motivation make similar behavioral predictions in this context, they assume different mediating states. Support is noted for the assumptions that mirror presence and audience presence induce self-focus, and that they lead to comparison with salient behavioral standards. Support for the assumption that these manipulations increase arousal is also reviewed, and is challenged on methodological grounds. The attentional analysis is used to derive predictions regarding changes in physiological state over the course of a typical social facilitation procedure. An experiment is reported which confirmed these predictions. Discussion centers on how to interpret physiological changes in terms that are compatible with control theory, how to account for social impairment phenomena in terms of the present model, and the conceptual relationship between mirror presence and audience presence as experimental manipulations.  相似文献

The authors provide a theoretical introduction for the church's ministry to singles by reviewing the family therapy literature as it pertains to familial disengagement or enmeshment and interpersonal mutuality or isolation. Belongingness based on consanguinity must eventually be replaced by belongingness rooted in consensuality or commitment. The single person must seek such commitment outside the institution of marriage. The church can offer belongingness through establishing parity, de-emphasizing segregation, promoting inclusion, and practicing community.  相似文献

Sixty-two children were evaluated 4 years after their initial referral for symptoms of hyperactivity. Behavioral measures included parent and teacher judgments of behavior and social adjustment. Academic achievement was assessed by teachers' reports, number of failed grades, special education services, and two individually administered achievement tests. Data were analyzed for the total group to determine both the extent to which presenting problems diminished over time and the major problems still present. The effects of stimulant drug therapy on outcome were assessed by dividing the children into groups according to the duration of time they had taken stimulants. Total duration of time on stimulants ranged from less than 6 months (group 1) to 4 years (group 5). Results indicated that the symptoms of hyperactivity significantly lessened, but remained higher in these children than in normal peers. Behavioral and social problems were less pervasive than academic underachievement. There were no group differences, indicating that the duration of stimulant intervention did not have a significant effect on outcome. The clinical implication of this study is that the beneficial effects of stimulant drug intervention occur within the first months after initiation of therapy. Long-term treatment does not appear to be of value in producing better outcome.  相似文献

Summary The present experiments address two interrelated problems; the causes of reading retardation and the possible mechanisms underlying multi-sensory teaching procedures, which involve manually tracing around words, and which reputedly help children retarded in reading. Two experiments explored the effects of manual tracing on memory for letters and non-verbal forms in normal and retarded readers. The retarded readers remembered fewer letters and gained selective benefit from tracing them. In the case of non-verbal forms the two groups performed equally and tracing was equally beneficial to memory in both groups. These findings were explained in terms of the retarded readers' limited reliance on a phonological memory code. A further experiment showed that the differential effect of tracing on the retarded readers' memory for letters was not simply a consequence of their limited reading ability. It was concluded that reading retardation is characterised by deficits of verbal, but not of visual, memory. The tracing activity involved in multi-sensory teaching may help retarded readers by providing a mnemonic aid, which compensates for their verbal memory difficulties.This research was carried out at the Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford, and was supported by the SSRC. We propose a two-part generalization about sex differences in entering into and giving up romantic attachments: (1) Men tend to fall in love more readily than women; (2) women tend to fall out of love more readily than men. Evidence in support of these generalizations is derived from a longitudinal study of 231 college student dating couples. The data suggest that women are more cautious than men about entering into romantic relationships, more likely to compare these relationships to alternatives, more likely to end a relationship that seems ill fated, and better able to cope with rejection. We consider several possible explanations of these sex differences from the standpoints of psychoanalytic theory, the social and economic context of mate selection, and the socialization of men and women in the management of their own emotions. To evaluate these (and any other) explanations, further research might profitably investigate whether and to what degree these sex differences are found in other segments of the population.This research was supported by National Science Foundation grant GS-27422 to Zick Rubin.
