A Methodological Study of a Measure of Family Cohesion

Olson, Bell, and Portner ( 11 ) have recently developed a measure of family adaptability and cohesion (The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales). This study is a critical evaluation of the construction of the cohesion subscale of this instrument. Included is a partial replication of the original work of Olson et al. ( 11 ). Some problems with this subscale and its construction are pointed out, and a subset of the original items is presented and discussed. Some implications of these results for the conceptualization of the nature of family cohesion are also discussed.     

Environmental Choice and Control In Community Care Settings for Older People1

This study focuses on the long-term stable levels of environmental choice and control available in community care settings, and explores how variations in these factors affect elderly residents of such settings. New methods to evaluate naturally-existing levels of policy choice and resident control are developed and applied to a representative sample of residential care facilities. The findings showed that residents with more functional resources, and women residents, were inore likely to live in facilities high in choice and control, and that these personal and environmental factors were associated with better resident functioning and more cohesive, independence-oriented social environments with relatively little conflict. Functionallyable residents reacted more positively to high control and women residents reacted more positively to high choice. Investigators who attempt to manipulate perceived control in institutional settings need to consider the existing opportunities residents have to exercise control, as well as the levels of other relevant personal and environmental resources.

The majority of the thousands of industrial arts majors that graduate each year in the nation take jobs in business and industry—not as teachers in schools and colleges as in the past. Many counselors are unaware of this and many other important facts about the field of industrial arts. This article provides insights to prepare job counselors as they counsel potential and established industrial arts majors and graduates.     

Personal sources for theories of psychotherapy: A bid for eclecticism

Personality and psychotherapy theorists choose certain elements to emphasize in their theories. A major, though usually unrecognized, source for such elements is the personal life of the theorist. Examples are drawn from nine theorists in the areas of family experiences, personal relationships, special experiences, and significant clients. The overall thesis is that an eclectic orientation to psychotherapy may be most appropriate since: (a) all theories emphasize certain elements (and ignore others), which is (b) often aided by (and limited by) the theorist's own life and experiences. Thus, if the client's personal life resembles the theorist's personal life, then the emphases developed by that theorist are most likely to be helpful to that client.     

A vector graphic CRT display system

A vector graphic CRT display system for research in visual information processing is described. The vector graphic processor includes a 4K-byte display memory. The processor communicates with the controlling computer via a serial channel. The system is capable of exposure durations below 1 msec, and it allows on-line generation and modification of display files during an experiment. Brightness can be controlled separately for each vector of a picture. A graphic display editor in FORTRAN IV for interactive editing and debugging of display files has been developed.     

The computer psychiatrist: How far have we come? Where are we heading? How far dare we go?

The use of computers in psychiatry and psychology is reviewed. It is noted that computers are already being used successfully for consultation, interviewing, and continuing education. Issues related to the usage of computers in mental health are discussed. Guidelines for future work in the area are suggested.     

Time-series analysis of long-term cardiovascular response

The purpose of this study was to illustrate the use of time-series analysis with long-term cardiovascular responding. Analyses of two successive 1000-minute mean blood pressure and heart-rate series in five chronically instrumented dogs showed that the autocorrelation function of the original series appeared highly nonstationary and that differencing the data produced a simple autocorrelation pattern which could be successfully modeled with stepwise autoregression. Evidence for reliable individual differences as well as change over sessions is presented and discussed.
