This paper exemplifies a secondary data analysis of context-specific differences in children's hyperactivity-impulsivity while controlling for informant-specific effects. Participants were boys and girls from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development who were measured in 1(st), 3(rd), and 5(th) grades. Latent factor models were structured using multi-informant reports including mothers, fathers, teachers, and observers. Temporal stability within a context was stronger than cross-context consistency, and the magnitude of longitudinal stability was higher in the home context compared to the school context. Controlling for informant-specific effects resulted in a significantly improved model fit and increased within-context stability. Our findings highlight the importance of considering both context and informant effects when studying longitudinal stability and change in personality development.  相似文献

We elaborate on the evidence for action effects on extinction and discuss whether these effects occur pre or post the selection of a response. The principle of arbitrariness in language assumes that there is no intrinsic relationship between linguistic signs and their referents. However, a growing body of sound-symbolism research suggests the existence of some naturally-biased mappings between phonological properties of labels and perceptual properties of their referents (Maurer, Pathman, & Mondloch, 2006). We present new behavioural and neurophysiological evidence for the psychological reality of sound-symbolism. In a categorisation task that captures the processes involved in natural language interpretation, participants were faster to identify novel objects when label–object mappings were sound-symbolic than when they were not. Moreover, early negative EEG-waveforms indicated a sensitivity to sound-symbolic label–object associations (within 200 ms of object presentation), highlighting the non-arbitrary relation between the objects and the labels used to name them. This sensitivity to sound-symbolic label–object associations may reflect a more general process of auditory–visual feature integration where properties of auditory stimuli facilitate a mapping to specific visual features.  相似文献

Positive attitudes have been identified across prosocial donation domains, but have not translated into a stable donor base. One explanation for this attitude‐behavior inconsistency is a failure to consider the affective and cognitive components of attitude. Studies were conducted to examine vested interest as a moderator of the attitude–behavior relationship in donation, while accounting for the multidimensional construction of attitude. Study 1 revealed a 3‐factor structure (stake, salience, self‐efficacy) for vested interest. Study 2 found no support for vested interest as a moderator of the attitude–behavior relationship, but revealed that self‐efficacy mediated the relationship between attitudes and behaviors for organ/tissue and blood donation. Results are discussed in terms of the usefulness of this research in crafting donation campaigns.  相似文献

After campaigning to be granted hospital privileges decades ago, new issues are emerging that are affecting psychologists’ hospital privileges. Some of the forces shaping hospital privileges emanate from within the field of psychology, where there has been a movement to more closely examine psychologists’ competences. Other forces impinging on hospital privileges are external to psychology, most notably the Joint Commission, which has promulgated new standards for hospital-based practitioners across disciplines. This article discusses the effects of these new standards on the practice of psychology and describes the findings of a survey examining how privileges are currently obtained and maintained within hospitals.  相似文献

Hippocampal-dependent tasks often involve specific associations among stimuli (including egocentric information), and such tasks are therefore prone to interference from irrelevant task strategies before a correct strategy is found. Using an object-place paired-associate task, we investigated changes in neural firing patterns in the hippocampus in association with a shift in strategy during learning. We used an object-place paired-associate task in which a pair of objects was presented in two different arms of a radial maze. Each object was associated with reward only in one of the arms, thus requiring the rats to consider both object identity and its location in the maze. Hippocampal neurons recorded in CA1 displayed a dynamic transition in their firing patterns during the acquisition of the task across days, and this corresponded to a shift in strategy manifested in behavioral data. Specifically, before the rats learned the task, they chose an object that maintained a particular egocentric relationship with their body (response strategy) irrespective of the object identity. However, as the animal acquired the task, it chose an object according to both its identity and the associated location in the maze (object-in-place strategy). We report that CA1 neurons in the hippocampus changed their prospective firing correlates according to the dominant strategy (i.e., response versus object-in-place strategy) employed at a given stage of learning. The results suggest that neural firing pattern in the hippocampus is heavily influenced by the task demand hypothesized by the animal and the firing pattern changes flexibly as the perceived task demand changes.An event often involves objects placed in particular locations. To form a cognitive representation of such an event, an animal needs to represent many heterogeneous pieces of information such as individual objects, their spatial locations, and also egocentric body movements associated with the navigation through the objects and locations. All the information then needs to be associated in a correct way (e.g., proper object-place association) for successful representation of the event. Processing only a subset of information successfully may lead to an error in identifying the correct event. It is believed that the hippocampus is essential for forming and retrieving such conjunctive representations among stimuli for processing events (O''Reilly and McClelland 1994).Due to its conjunctive information processing after receiving inputs from multiple sources (e.g., information for object recognition, egocentric memory, allocentric memory, etc.), the hippocampal system is prone to competition with other systems especially when a simpler strategy that requires information from a single source seems a viable option. Behavioral and pharmacological studies have supported this hypothesis (Packard and McGaugh 1996; Poldrack and Packard 2003). Physiologically, the influence of switching strategy on hippocampal neuronal firing has been documented in the literature and often tested in a plus maze. It has been shown, for example, that passing a common area of space using different task demands alters the firing properties of hippocampal neurons (Wood et al. 2000; Ferbinteanu and Shapiro 2003; Lee et al. 2006; Eschenko and Mizumori 2007). In most of these studies, however, rats were pre-trained before electrophysiological recordings were made and an experimenter enforced the change in task demand. Therefore, it has been difficult to investigate a naturally occurring competition between different strategies as learning proceeds and the resulting neural dynamics in the hippocampus especially when learning takes place for the first time.Using a hippocampal dependent task, we aimed to characterize such naturally occurring changes in hippocampal firing patterns as a wrong strategy is replaced by the correct strategy during learning. We also investigated the relationships between the changes in firing patterns and behavioral performance. We used a biconditional object-place paired-associate task for this purpose. We demonstrated previously that hippocampal lesioned rats were severely impaired in this task (Lee and Solivan 2008). In this task, two different objects are presented simultaneously as a pair, and rats are required to discriminate between the objects according to the location (an arm in a radial maze) in which they are presented. Once it enters an arm, the rat positions itself between two objects and must choose either the left or right direction toward either object to displace the object for obtaining a food reward. Since the relative object positions within an arm vary across trials, remembering the running direction in which a reward is found (i.e., response strategy) is meaningless and the rat must learn to pay attention to the object identity and its associated location in space (i.e., object-in-place strategy). In our previous studies (Lee and Solivan 2008, 2010; Jo and Lee 2010), we observed a strong competition in this task between a response strategy and object-in-place strategy. Normal rats used the response strategy before learning occurred, but exhibited a sharp transition to the object-in-place strategy in several days. The selective involvement of the hippocampus was strongly implicated in the task as the hippocampal lesioned rats show stereotypic egocentric responses (Lee and Solivan 2008). The current study aimed to find and characterize in detail matching neural correlates in the hippocampus in the object-place paired-associate task.  相似文献

Animal studies indicate that early maternal care has long‐term effects on brain areas related to social attachment and parenting, whereas neglectful mothering is linked with heightened stress reactivity in the hippocampus across the lifespan. The present study explores the possibility, using magnetic resonance imaging, that perceived quality of maternal care in childhood is associated with brain structure and functional responses to salient infant stimuli among human mothers in the first postpartum month. Mothers who reported higher maternal care in childhood showed larger grey matter volumes in the superior and middle frontal gyri, orbital gyrus, superior temporal gyrus and fusiform gyrus. In response to infant cries, these mothers exhibited higher activations in the middle frontal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus and fusiform gyrus, whereas mothers reporting lower maternal care showed increased hippocampal activations. These findings suggest that maternal care in childhood may be associated with anatomy and functions in brain regions implicated in appropriate responsivity to infant stimuli in human mothers.  相似文献

Research has shown that cultural identification is influenced by the congruence between people's personal values and intersubjectively represented cultural values. The current research extended this finding to voter choice and behaviour. We hypothesized that people whose values and attitudes are similar to the collective representations of the political party that an election candidate belongs to would be more likely to vote for that candidate. Also, this relationship would be mediated by party identification. We found support for our hypotheses in two studies, one on the Legislative Council election in Hong Kong and the other on the 2004 US presidential election.  相似文献

To systematically review and meta-synthesise primary qualitative research findings regarding family communication following genetic testing of cancer risk, in order to inform development of effective interventions. Systematic searches of CINAHL, Embase, Medline, British Nursing Index and PsycINFO databases were undertaken and relevant studies identified using strict criteria. The selected primary qualitative studies were appraised for quality and relevance by three independent researchers and then synthesized using a “Framework” approach. Fourteen (4.3%) studies met the inclusion criteria. The following factors influenced family communication following genetic testing for late-onset hereditary cancer: the informant’s feelings about informing relatives about genetic testing; the perceived relevance of the information to other family members and their anticipated reactions; the “closeness” of relationships within the family; family rules and patterns (e.g., who is best placed to share information with whom); finding the right time and level of disclosure; and the supportive role of heath care professionals. The themes identified in this review could provide practitioners with a useful framework for discussing family communication with those undergoing genetic testing. This framework focuses on helping health care professionals to facilitate family communication. The next step will be the development of an intervention to directly support people in talking to their relatives.  相似文献

The Harter Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC) is one of the most commonly used measures of childhood self-esteem, yet there is little research assessing the psychometric properties of the SPPC for use with an African American population. A sample of 92 African American adolescent females (M age = 12.33) was administered the SPPC in order to assess its suitability for this population in three ways. First, an exploratory factor analysis demonstrated complex components without any factors being identical to the normative factors. The greatest differences were within the behavior and scholastic subscales which had items cross loading on three different factors. Second, the SPPC demonstrated only moderate internal reliability with subscale alpha coefficients ranging from .71 to .82. Third, a comparison with the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale provided evidence of poor convergent validity. These results raise questions about the validity of the SPPC for use with African American adolescent females.  相似文献
