When the stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) between the cue and the target is short, exogenous spatial cues usually produce a response time benefit. However, consistent with several recent studies, we have found that a short stimulus onset asynchrony is not sufficient. At least one more factor--the number of cue and target locations--also plays a role. Even more interesting, when 8 cue and target locations are used, the effect of an exogenous cue produces a cost on valid cue trials, and the spatial metric of this negative cuing effect depends on whether the cue remains visible at target onset. 相似文献

Distinguishing between the precision of attentional localization and attentional resolution 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Attentional resolution is a construct that refers to the minimal separation that allows one stimulus to be attended separately from nearby stimuli. The attentional walk task, which requires a series of covert shifts of attention within variably dense arrays of stimuli, was introduced as a method of measuring attentional resolution. Using a cuing task, we show that individual items within arrays that are too dense to support an attentional walk can nonetheless be attended. We note that the precision with which attention can be localized is, in principle, a limitation separate from attentional resolution and conclude that performance in the attentional walk task is better suited for measuring this limitation than for measuring attentional resolution per se. 相似文献

The purpose of this study is to estimate the relationship between receiving emotional support from parents early in life and an individual's health in adulthood. Analysis of data from a nationally representative sample of adults ages 25-74 years suggests that a lack of parental support during childhood is associated with increased levels of depressive symptoms and chronic conditions in adulthood. These associations between early parental support and adult health persist with increasing age throughout adulthood. Personal control, self-esteem, and social relationships during adulthood account for a large portion of these long-term associations. These findings underscore the importance of adopting a life course perspective in studying the social determinants of health among adults. 相似文献

Object-based selection in the two-rectangles method is not an artifact of the three-sided directional cue 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A common means of investigating object-specific selection is the two-rectangles method, in which a target appears at one end of two rectangles (Egly, Driver, & Rafal, 1994). Prior to target presentation, one end of two parallel rectangles is cued by brightening the three line segments along one of its ends. When the target appears in the opposite end of the cued rectangle, responses tend to be faster and more accurate than when it appears in the end of the other rectangle, which is equally distant from the cue. This effect has been taken as evidence of object-specific selection of information. The present study rules out the concern that the object-specific effect that is found with this method is caused by the directional nature of the cue. That is, the three-sided cue, which essentially points to the "same-object" location, does not itself give rise to the object-specific advantage. These results are discussed in terms of the combined roles of explicit object structure in the scene, past experience, and task set as contributing to the way in which information is organized and selected from a scene. 相似文献

The Simon effect (SE) usually is described as the performance advantage that results when a target and its associated response share the same spatial code, as opposed to when they do not, even when the target's spatial code is task-irrelevant. To some, this task-irrelevant code represents the location of the target with respect to the participant (Simon & Craft, 1970), whereas to others (Umiltà & Nicoletti, 1992) it represents the location of the target with respect to the locus of attention. By using a spatial cuing procedure, we simultaneously tested both of these hypotheses and found evidence that both types of codes produce independent SEs, therefore providing evidence that multiple spatial codes can simultaneously influence performance in a Simon task. 相似文献

The COVID‐19 global health crisis compelled behavior analysts to consider alternatives to face‐to‐face services to treat children with feeding disorders. Research suggests telehealth is one method behavior analysts could use to initiate or continue assessment of and treatment for feeding disorders. In the current paper, we conducted pilot studies in which we analyzed chart records of patients with Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder; who graduated from an intensive, day‐treatment program; and transitioned to an outpatient follow‐up program. In Experiment 1, we analyzed the data of participants who received follow‐up both in‐clinic and via telehealth. In Experiment 2, we analyzed goal attainment for participants who received outpatient follow‐up either in‐clinic exclusively or via telehealth exclusively. Results of both studies showed that outcomes were equivalent along most dimensions for in‐clinic and telehealth services. We provide recommendations for telehealth feeding services and discuss other considerations relevant to telehealth service delivery. 相似文献

Information about family coping when a child with a chronic illness is hospitalized for procedures related to his or her illness is needed. The current research presents the results of two pilot studies designed to assess family resilience and coping, during a hospitalization for medical procedures for a child with a chronic condition. Sixty-one parents participated in the first study and reported on their child’s hospital experiences and completed a survey designed to assess family coping. Twelve mothers and one grandmother completed interviews examining their perceptions of their coping, siblings’ coping, and coping of the child with an illness for study two. Results of Study 1 indicated parents’ perceived the family as resilient. Cognitive strategies were used to see the hospital stay as positive for the child or to accept what had to occur as having the possibility of improving the child’s life. Some of the mothers mentioned financial stress as being difficult for the family. Results of Study 2 also supported resilient functioning for mothers, siblings, and children with illnesses. Mothers reported they stayed strong for their child. Siblings could serve as protectors, helpers, and companions and were described as adapting well. Children with illnesses used distraction (e.g., play, art, music) to facilitate their coping. Findings of this study indicated parents perceived the family as coping well and supporting the child with an illness. Future research will need to assess perceptions of siblings and fathers and assess family members’ perspectives at different times over the course of children’s illnesses. 相似文献

We evaluated the effects of a high‐probability (high‐p) instructional sequence on the feeding‐related compliance (food acceptance) of a young boy diagnosed with a feeding disorder. The high‐p sequence consisted of three presentations of an empty spoon; the low‐probability (low‐p) instruction was the presentation of a spoon with food. Results showed that acceptance of food increased in the presence and not the absence of the high‐p sequence.
