One of the most persistent critics of Sosa’s attempts to bifurcate knowledge is Kornblith (in: Greco (ed) Ernest sosa and his critics, Wiley, Hoboken, 2004; ‘Sosa in Perspective’, Philos Stud 144(1):127–136, 2009; On reflection, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2012). Our aim in this paper is to outline and evaluate Kornblith’s criticisms. We will argue that, while they raise a range of difficult (exegetical and substantive) questions about Sosa’s ‘bi-level’ epistemology, Sosa has the resources to adequately respond to all of them. Thus, this paper is a (qualified) defence of Sosa’s bi-level epistemology.

The literature indicates that perceived racism tends to be associated with adverse psychological and physiological outcomes; however, findings in this area are not yet conclusive. In this meta-analysis, we systematically reviewed 66 studies (total sample size of 18,140 across studies), published between January 1996 and April 2011, on the associations between racism and mental health among Black Americans. Using a random-effects model, we found a positive association between perceived racism and psychological distress (r = .20). We found a moderation effect for psychological outcomes, with anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric symptoms having a significantly stronger association than quality of life indicators. We did not detect moderation effects for type of racism scale, measurement precision, sample type, or type of publication. Implications for research and practice are discussed. 相似文献
What kinds of purchases do the most to make us happy? Previous research (Carter & Gilovich, 2010; Van Boven & Gilovich, 2003) indicates that experiences, such as vacations and concerts, are more likely to do so than material possessions, such as clothes and electronic gadgets. The present research was designed to explore 1 potential explanation for this result, namely, that experiences tend to be more closely associated with the self than possessions. The authors first show that people tend to think of their experiential purchases as more connected to the self than their possessions. Compared with their material purchases, participants drew their experiential purchases physically closer to the self (Study 1), were more likely to mention them when telling their life story (Study 2), and felt that a purchase described in terms of its experiential, rather than its material, qualities would overlap more with their sense of who they are (Study 4). Participants also felt that knowing a person's experiential purchases, compared with their material purchases, would yield greater insight into that person's true self (Studies 3A-3C). The authors then show that the tendency to cling more closely to cherished experiential memories is connected to the greater satisfaction people derive from experiences than possessions (Study 5). 相似文献
Behavioral and emotional problems are highly prevalent in early childhood and represent an important focus of practice for
clinical child and pediatric psychologists. Although psychological or psychiatric disorders are not typically diagnosed in
children under the age of 2 years, recent research has demonstrated the appropriateness of assessing behavioral and emotional
problems during the first 2 years of life (defined throughout as “infancy”). The current paper provides a systematic review
of assessment procedures used to identify behavioral and emotional problems during infancy. Existing assessment procedures
for infants take the form of parent- or caregiver-report questionnaires, observational coding procedures, and diagnostic classification
systems. The questionnaires and observational coding procedures both had substantial psychometric evidence for use with infants,
although observational coding may have limited utility in clinical practice. The classification systems have less empirical
support for use with infants, and further research is necessary to demonstrate the appropriateness of these procedures with
infants. Utilizing the reviewed procedures to assess behavioral and emotional problems in infants can have a substantial impact
in research and practice settings, and further research is needed to determine the usefulness of these procedures in developing,
testing, and implementing preventive and early intervention programs for infants and their families. 相似文献
To date, few studies have examined how different strategies for coping with racism affect the mental health of Black Americans, and none have explored how racial identity status attitudes and racism-related coping affect mental health. This study sought to examine the relationship between racial identity status attitudes, the specific strategies used by Black Americans to cope with racism, and mental health outcomes. Participants were 233 Black adults, and cluster analysis identified four cluster groups that differed significantly with respect to the patterns of racial identity attitudes and racism-related coping strategies employed. Although the groups did not differ significantly in well-being, the group with predominantly high Internalization status attitudes and that used primarily Empowered Resistance racism-related coping strategies had the least psychological symptoms. Schizophrenia is one of the most debilitating of all common brain disorders, exacting a heavy toll on the afflicted and having a tremendous public health impact. Clinical outcome is more strongly predicted by cognitive deficits than psychotic symptoms, with no established treatment for these deficits. In this review, we discuss the status of treatment development for impaired cognition in schizophrenia. These treatments include a range of pharmacological targets within diverse neurotransmitter systems. New technologies, including transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation, and psychological therapies, such as computer-based cognitive training, may also benefit cognition in schizophrenia. Each of these approaches shows promise and their integration may optimize benefits for patients in the future. 相似文献
