Using an interview/questionnaire procedure, 19 clients reported 200 helpful, significant events that occurred in ongoing counseling. Each event consisted of one issue presented by the client, the counselor's response to that issue, and the immediate impact the client received from the counselor's response. With the use of qualitative analysis, 9 prominent patterns describing sequences of client change emerged from the data. These patterns were grouped into 3 superclusters of events: Dissonant, Question—Answer, and Congruent. These superclusters and the 9 prominent patterns were used to develop a model for counseling change. Implications for counseling theory and practice are discussed.  相似文献

We report here on research in progress aimed at documenting in detail the restitution of movement in the upper limb. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Treatment of Depression Collaborative Research Program (Elkin et al., Archives of General Psychiatry, 46, 971-982; 1989) reported treatment-by-severity interactions favouring pharmacotherapy for more depressed outpatients, on a minority of relevant comparisons. The present study reports secondary analyses from a similar, preexisting data set in which treatment-by-severity interactions are systematically investigated with depressed outpatients treated either with nondirective psychotherapy, behaviour therapy, pharmacotherapy, or relaxation/placebo. Despite multiple severity measures and variable severity cut scores, no treatment was differentially effective in improving more severely depressed patients. Also, there was little difference across symptom severity levels in the proportions of recovered patients between treatment groups. Finally, dynamic cluster analysis demonstrated that the proportion of pharmacotherapy nonresponders (20%) did not differ from the proportion of nonresponders in behaviour therapy or placebo groups. It is concluded that this failure to replicate the NIMH trial findings can not be attributed to treatment differences, populations or statistical power. The suggestion that pharmacotherapy be the treatment of choice for more severely depressed outpatients appears to be unjustified on the basis of available evidence.  相似文献

Four pigeons responded in components of multiple schedules in which two responses were available and reinforced with food. Pecks on the left key (“main” key) were reinforced at a constant rate in one component and at a rate that varied over conditions in the other component. When reinforcer rate was varied, behavioral contrast occurred in the constant component. On the right key (“extra” key), five variable-interval schedules and one variable-ratio schedule, presented conjointly, arranged reinforcers for responses in all conditions. These conjoint schedules were common to both multiple-schedule components—rather than unique to particular components—and reinforcers from these schedules could therefore be arranged in one component and obtained during the other component. In this way, the additional reinforcers were analogous to the “extraneous” reinforcers thought to maintain behavior other than pecking in conventional multiple schedules. Response rate on the extra key did not change systematically over conditions in the constant component, and in the varied component extra responding was inversely related to main-key reinforcement. All subjects obtained more extra-key reinforcers in whichever component arranged fewer main-key reinforcers. Consistent with the theory that reallocation of extraneous reinforcers may cause behavioral contrast, absolute reinforcer rate for the extra key in the constant component was low in conditions that produced positive contrast on the main key and high in those that produced negative contrast. Also consistent with this theory, behavioral contrast was reduced in two conditions that canceled extra-key reinforcers that had been arranged but not obtained at the end of components. Thus, a constraint on reallocation markedly reduced the extent of contrast.  相似文献

In order to specify by which combination of content and form dimensions the explicit verbal feedback comes to be most effective in enhancing communication skills, a training experiment was designed where both dimensions were factorially manipulated. Forty children (mean age, 5–10) were randomly assigned to one of four treatment conditions: Interrogative Cognitive feedback, Declarative Cognitive feedback, Interrogative Perceptual feedback, and Declarative Perceptual feedback. The Cognitive type of feedback specified the successive cognitive steps underlying the comparison activity whereas the Perceptual type of feedback stressed only the necessity of describing perceptual differences when communicating. These two contents of feedback were either provided by a set of standardized questions or of declarative statements, after each trial of a speaking training task. Subjects were given a pretest, and immediate and delayed posttests comprised of a speaking task and a listening generalization task. A 2 (Contents) × 2 (Forms) × 2 (Tasks) × 2 (Post-tests) analysis of variance showed that all subjects performed significantly better on the speaking task than on the listening generalization task and that subjects in the Interrogative Cognitive condition performed better than subjects in the three other conditions, on both post-test tasks. Results emphasize the mutual facilitating effects of the Interrogative Form and the Cognitive Content of explicit feedback and are discussed in terms of the generalization and stability of the induced learning.  相似文献

In multiple schedules of reinforcement, ratios of responses in successive components are relatively insensitive to ratios of obtained reinforcers. An analysis is proposed that attributes changes in absolute response rates to concurrent interactions between programmed reinforcement and extraneous reinforcement in other components. The analysis predicts that ratios of responses in successive components vary with reinforcer ratios, qualified by a term describing the reinforcement context, that is, programmed and extraneous reinforcers. Two main predictions from the analysis were confirmed in an experiment in which pigeons' responses were reinforced in the components of a multiple schedule and analog extraneous reinforcement was scheduled for an alternative response in each component. Sensitivity of response and time ratios to reinforcer ratios in the multiple schedules varied as a function of the rate of extraneous reinforcers. Bias towards responding in one component of the multiple schedule varied as an inverse function of the ratios of extraneous reinforcer rate in the two components. The data from this and previous studies of multiple-concurrent performance were accurately predicted by our analysis and supported our contention that the allocation of behavior in multiple-schedule components depends on the relative values of concurrently-available reinforcers within each component.  相似文献

Six multiple variable-interval schedules each comprised one variable-interval sixty second component and an alternated component which was varied. Four pigeons' responses were recorded in five successive subintervals of each component. Response rate changes across subintervals revealed instances of local contrast and small local induction effects in the changed component. In the constant component, smaller local contrast and larger local induction effects obtained. Accordingly, the magnitude of behavioral contrast, defined as an inverse relation between response rate in the constant component and reinforcement rate in the changed component, did not change reliably across subintervals of the constant component. Ratios of response rates in initial subintervals were highly sensitive to reinforcement ratios. Sensitivity decreased sharply over the first two-fifths of the components and remained constant for the remainder. The results demonstrated that changes in multiple schedule sensitivity are a function of time since the alternation of successive components.  相似文献

Once upon a time a training unit embarked upon a Journey. The Journey was to encompass a year's training and supervision in family therapy. Bags were packed to the brim with theory and training methods. One day the Unit left the bags behind to see what would happen if they travelled light and let the students bring their own luggage to the examination. Students were expected to describe their relationships with the interviewed families, and their training through a story. The great exam day came. Inspired students used innovative ideas and metaphors to describe the Journey. This article tells the story about these stories and the Unit's learning from them.  相似文献

We describe the results of four picture-recognition memory experiments in which we systematically manipulated four variables: stimulus duration, stimulus contrast, the duration of a blank gap between successive presentations of the same stimulus, and the presence or absence of a noise mask that immediately followed stimulus offset. The patterns of obtained data confirmed a simple extension of a theory previously used to account for digit recall data. This theory consists of a low-pass linearfilter front end that generates a sensory response from the physical stimulus, followed by an informationsampling process whose instantaneous sampling rate is based in part on the sensory response magnitude. The data confirm both qualitative and quantitative theoretical predictions, some of which were previously untestable in digit recall tasks because of ceiling effects that were not present in our picturerecognition tasks. We describe the role of our theory within the broader family of picture-memory theories, and we briefly discuss our theory’s unification of two salient facets of visual behavior: information acquisition on the one hand, and phenomenological appearance on the other hand.  相似文献

To determine whether ethical issues concerned with field research are addressed in the peer-review process, instructions to authors and reviewers of 141 (mainly natural science) journals were examined to ascertain how often ethical issues were mentioned. Only one-third (n=41) of responding journals addressed ethical issues in their instructions to authors or reviewers. When ethical issues were considered, most of the journals limited their concerns to ethical issues associated with animal and general human experimentation. No journal mentioned ethical practices in working with indigenous peoples or on traditional lands. Only two journals addressed the ethics of research in sensitive areas in their instructions to authors, only one in its instructions to reviewers. We suggest that peer-reviewed journals respond to an emerging issue in ecological research by formally incorporating research ethics into their instructions to authors and reviewers. Furthermore, these instructions should address the ethical issues associated with field research and in working with indigenous peoples and on traditional lands.  相似文献
