Examination of childhood risk factors for injection drug use may provide clues as to why people progress to injection drug
use and it can promote identification of at-risk youth. We surveyed current injection drug users (IDUs) and individuals who
never injected drugs (non-IDUs), recruited through street outreach and snowball sampling in Denver, CO. Between March 2000
and October 2003, 601 subjects (339 IDUs and 262 non-IDUs) participated in structured interviews. We examined self-reported
factors in childhood that may have been influential in whether one progressed to drug injection later in life. These indicators
included age at drug and alcohol initiation, childhood risk behavior, parental monitoring, family stability, and other family
problems. Differences between IDUs and non-IDUs were assessed using unadjusted tests and logistic regression. Results of the
data analysis indicated that IDUs were significantly younger when they first used both alcohol and marijuana, they reported
higher childhood risk behavior scores, and they had less parental monitoring and less family stability as children than non-IDUs.
This research may assist clinicians in defining factors that put youth at risk for problems associated with injection drug

Learning to perform instrumental tasks is an ability of all animals. In a population of rats, not all individuals will acquire an operant response for reward. We hypothesized that there could be a genetic explanation for differences between High Consumers (those that acquired the lever press response) and Low Consumers (lever press response is low). Additionally, we proposed that this genetic difference could produce measurable changes in response to novelty. Wistar rats were trained to lever press for a 0.2% saccharin reward and on the 10th day they were placed in a novel open field for 30 min to record locomotor activity. The prefrontal cortex and hippocampus were dissected and qPCR was used to measure mRNA expression. A significant difference (p=.048; 2-way ANOVA) in gene expression was observed between Low and High Consumers. A principal component analysis (PCA), to cluster which genes represent this difference, identified 4 genes; 5-HT2A and mGlu1 in the hippocampus and AMPA GluR1 and adrenergic alpha2A in the prefrontal cortex. Response to a novel open field also differed since Low Consumers displayed a higher Total Distance in comparison to High Consumers. Additionally, Low Consumers could be subdivided into Low-Lever (with lever press response only when water deprived) and Low-Non-Lever (lever press response is low throughout training). PCA with this subdivision identified an additional nine genes differing within the divisions; NMDA NR2B and GABAAalpha3 in the prefrontal cortex and adrenergic alpha2B and alpha2A, AMPA GluR1, GluR2 and GluR3, 5-HT1B and GABAAalpha5 in the hippocampus. 相似文献

The Self-Regulation of Motivation Model suggests that the experience of interest is an important source of human motivation
and that people often strategically regulate the experience of interest. Previous work based on this model suggests that the
social context may influence this process at multiple points. The present research focuses on whether talking to others about
an activity experience is one means by which individuals evaluate how interesting that activity is. In Study 1 college students
completed questionnaires that asked about real life experiences where working on an activity was more interesting because
they worked with others. They described experiences that occurred first in any domain, and then that occurred specifically
in the school domain. Results suggested that the more students talked with others about the activity after it happened the more they reported greater interest in the activity after the conversations. In the school domain, this was
especially true for Latinos and for individuals who scored higher on the Relational Self-Construal scale. Study 2 employed
a lab paradigm to control for the task that individuals talked to others about and to examine whether the nature of listeners’
reactions influenced the speaker’s interest even after the study was ostensibly over. First, replicating Pasupathi and Rich
(2005, ‘Inattentive listening undermines self-verification in personal storytelling’, Journal of Personality 73, pp. 1051–1086)
college students who talked to a distracted friend about a computer game during the lab session reported a significant drop
in interest relative to those who talked to attentive friends, regardless of whether the attentive listeners agreed or disagreed
with participants. Importantly, interest ratings at a 4–6 week follow-up were affected by the perceived responsiveness of
listeners during spontaneous conversational retellings outside the lab, controlling for interest levels at the end of the
lab session. Taken together, results suggest that social interaction plays an important role in regulating activity interest

This study examined the reactions of 207 undergraduate women (mean age?=?20.6, 91.3% White) from a Northeastern U.S. university to a scenario in which a feminist or non-feminist woman did or did not indicate that gender discrimination was the reason that she was passed over for a leadership role. Participants rated the feminist woman as less a victim of discrimination and as more of a complainer than the non-feminist woman. Participants also had a more positive impression of the woman and rated her as less of a complainer when discrimination was certain or ambiguous than when there was little evidence of discrimination. We examined gender stereotypes and perceptions of aggression in 743 US psychology students at a northeastern university in the USA. Participants rated a vignette depicting torture of an Iraqi prisoner by an American soldier in which the gender of prisoner and guard were varied. The results showed that female participants viewed torture more negatively than male participants. Additionally, participants perceived the torture and killing of a female prisoner warranted significant compensation to her family. However, participants perceived violent acts by a male guard to be as serious as for a female guard, suggesting a shift in perceptions of gender role stereotypes. Our findings demonstrate a change in the gender role stereotyping for females in the military and suggest a number of future studies. 相似文献

Previous evidence suggests that directional social cues (e.g., eye gaze) cause automatic shifts in attention toward gaze direction.
It has been proposed that automatic attentional orienting driven by social cues (social orienting) involves a different neural
network from automatic orienting driven by nonsocial cues. However, previous neuroimaging studies on social orienting have
only compared gaze cues to symbolic cues, which typically engage top-down mechanisms. Therefore, we directly compared the
neural activity involved in social orienting to that involved in purely automatic nonsocial orienting. Twenty participants
performed a spatial cueing task consisting of social (gaze) cues and automatic nonsocial (peripheral squares) cues presented
at short and long stimulus (cue-to-target) onset asynchronies (SOA), while undergoing fMRI. Behaviorally, a facilitation effect
was found for both cue types at the short SOA, while an inhibitory effect (inhibition of return: IOR) was found only for nonsocial
cues at the long SOA. Imaging results demonstrated that social and nonsocial cues recruited a largely overlapping fronto-parietal
network. In addition, social cueing evoked greater activity in occipito-temporal regions at both SOAs, while nonsocial cueing
recruited greater subcortical activity, but only for the long SOA (when IOR was found). A control experiment, including central
arrow cues, confirmed that the occipito-temporal activity was at least in part due to the social nature of the cue and not
simply to the location of presentation (central vs. peripheral). These results suggest an evolutionary trajectory for automatic
orienting, from predominantly subcortical mechanisms for nonsocial orienting to predominantly cortical mechanisms for social

This study aimed to determine whether horses have a kind of memory of humans (based on previous interactions), leading to
a general significance of humans revealed by their reactions to humans in subsequent interactions. Subjects were 59 adult
horses used to interact daily with humans. Three types of behavioural tests involving an unknown experimenter evaluated three
possibly different memorized types of human–animal interactions (not work-related, using work-related objects, unfamiliar
working task). We also performed standardized observations of routine interactions between each horse and its familiar handler
(caretaker). To get a broad overview of the horses’ reactions to humans, we recorded both investigative and aggressive behaviours
during the tests, representing respectively a “positive” and a “negative” memory of the relationship. Whereas correlations
between tests revealed a general perception of humans as either positive or negative, unusual tests, i.e. that are not usually
performed, elicited more positive reactions. Moreover, some horses reacted positively to a motionless person in their box,
but negatively when this same person approached them, for example for halter fitting. Overall, aggressive reactions were more
reliable indicators of the relationship than positive reactions, both between tests and between familiar and unfamiliar humans.
Our results also show generalization of the perception of humans. These results support our hypothesis that perception of
humans by horses may be based on experience, i.e. repeated interactions. Altogether, our results support the hypothesis that
horses can form a memory of humans that impacts their reactions in subsequent interactions. 相似文献

ABSTRACT— We suggest that psychologists can play a larger role in the solution of important social problems. Psychology brings two important qualities to the study of social problems: attention to psychological process and rigorous methodology. Our key task is to define social problems in part as psychological problems, and to conduct rigorous research that tests novel psychological solutions. Examples of research that has taken this path—research on race differences in academic performance, on the training of executive function and intelligence, and on the provision of socially constructive default decisions—are provided. We argue that addressing social problems can enrich our science by connecting psychologists to interdisciplinary teams and by providing contexts in which to demonstrate, in striking ways, the value of a psychological approach. 相似文献
