Individuality,conformity and collective identity

Abstract

Distinctions are made between defensive, expressive, and affiliative conformity. Although all forms of conformity play significant roles in the shaping of identity, both for good and for ill, their negative influence has received most of the attention in contemporary psychoanalytic thought. A treatment history is presented here to illustrate the constructive possibilities sometimes realized through expression of affiliative conformity.     

EVOLUTION AND THE MEANING OF LIFE

Abstract. The last century has witnessed a succession of revolutionary transformations in the discipline of biology. However, the rapid expansion of our understanding of life and its nature has had curiously little impact on the way that questions about life and its significance have been discussed by philosophers. This paper explores the answers that biology provides to central questions about our existence, and it examines why the substitution of causal explanations for teleological ones appears natural and satisfying in the case of physical theory but meets widespread resistance in the case of biology.     

The behavioural treatment of obsessional-compulsive disorders, with and without clomipramine

The effects of behavioural treatment alone, and in combination with clomipramine, were assessed on 40 patients with chronic obsessional-compulsive disorders, using a 2 × 2 factorial design. These effects were assessed by behavioural measures and mood measures.The behavioural treatment was followed by significant improvements on most behavioural measures. Clomipramine administration was followed by significant improvements on mood scales and some behavioural measures. There were no significant interactions between these two experimental conditions.     

Return of fear: The role of rehearsal

The assumption was made that return of fear could be brought about by recalling highly fear-provoking material. Two conditions were contrasted in the design, one of which was high- vs low-intensity treatment and the other rehearsal of phobic material vs distraction following treatment. The experimental conditions yielded no significant results at the end of the rehearsal/distribution period. However, a week later at retest, partial return of subjective fear was observed in the ‘distraction’ groups and elevated heart-rates in the high-intensity groups. It was concluded that rehearsal of fear-provoking material following treatment constituted a prolongation of the latter and was therefore therapeutic. Implications of results with regard to within and between-session habituation are discussed.     

Psysquash: a program for the analysis of PsyScope data files

Many experiment-running programs generate output files that require selection, reduction, and formatting of the raw data before the numbers are suitable for input into statistical packages. PsySquash is a Macintosh program for the selection, organization, and summary of the tabular data that are produced by a widely used freeware data acquisition system, PsyScope. PsySquash serves as a bridge between PsyScope’s output data format and the input formats required by common statistical packages such as SAS, SPSS, and SuperAnova. An extension of PsySquash is proposed for use with arbitrary tabular data.
