Factors related to young women’s reported likelihood of confronting sexism were investigated. Participants were 338 U.S. female undergraduates (M?=?19 years) attending a California university. They were asked to complete questionnaire measures and to write a personal narrative about an experience with sexism. Approximately half (46%) the women reported confronting the perpetrator. Individual factors (prior experience with sexism, feminist identification, collective action) and situational factors (familiarity and status of perpetrator, type of sexism) were tested as predictors in a logistic regression. Women were less likely to report confronting sexism if (1) they did not identify as feminists, (2) the perpetrator was unfamiliar or high-status/familiar (vs. familiar/equal-status), or (3) the type of sexism involved unwanted sexual attention (vs. sexist comments). 相似文献

Embodiment in psychological research and theory often refers to the idea that the body plays a crucial role in emotive, motivational,
and cognitive processes. We review past and recent embodiment research, focusing on neuroscientific work. In particular, we
review a growing body of evidence supporting the notion that manipulated facial expressions, hand contractions, and changes
in physical posture influence physiological activity related to approach motivation or the inclination to move toward a stimulus.
Several other perspectives are also considered, such as work related to facial-feedback theories of emotion, theories of grounded
or embodied cognition, and mirror neuron research. Ultimately, we conclude that bi-directionality may exist between certain
bodily movements and other components of approach- or avoidance-related emotions. Avenues for new research are considered

Objectives
This study examined different scheduling demands as a moderator of the self-regulatory efficacy (SRE)/physical activity relationship.Design
A prospective design was used.Method
Adolescents (N = 275) reported SRE and activity during times that reflected high and low scheduling demands.Results
When scheduling demands were high, SRE predicted individual activity behavior (p < .001). During a period that reflected lower scheduling demands, however, SRE did not predict physical activity behavior (p = .25).Conclusions

The value of evidence-based services is now recognized both within clinical communities and by the public at large. Increasingly,
neuropsychologists must justify the necessity of often costly and time-consuming neuropsychological assessments in the diagnosis
and treatment of common childhood disorders, such as Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Published medical guidelines
and prominent researchers, however, have argued against the need for formal neuropsychological assessment of ADHD. The present
review examines the literature on developmental outcomes in childhood ADHD, with emphasis on the utility of formal neuropsychological
assessment among children diagnosed and treated in primary care settings. The review yields three central findings: 1) adherence
to published diagnostic guidelines for ADHD is poor among pediatric and primary care physicians; 2) ADHD most often co-exists
with other disorders, thus diagnoses made without formal psychometric assessment can be incomplete or incorrect, ultimately
increasing treatment costs; and, 3) untreated children with ADHD, and those who have untreated comorbidities, are at greater
risk for poor outcomes in social, academic, vocational, and practical settings. The available literature suggests that neuropsychological
assessment provides information that can potentially reduce risks for poor outcomes and improve quality of life among children
with ADHD. Controlled studies directly examining the impact of neuropsychological assessments in improving outcomes among

Huntington disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant, progressive neurodegenerative disorder for which there is no cure. Predictive testing for HD is available to asymptomatic at-risk individuals. Approximately half of the population undergoing predictive testing for HD consists of young adults (≤35 years old). Finishing one’s education, starting a career, engaging in romantic relationships and becoming a parent are key milestones of young adulthood. We conducted a qualitative study to explore how testing gene-positive for HD influences young adults’ attainment of these milestones, and to identify major challenges that pre-symptomatic young adults face to aid the development of targeted genetic counseling. Results of our study demonstrate that 1) knowing one’s gene-positive status results in an urgency to reach milestones and positively changes young adults’ approach to life; 2) testing positive influences young adults’ education and career choices, romantic relationships, and family planning; 3) young adults desire flexible and tailored genetic counseling to address needs and concerns unique to this population. Findings of this study contribute to the understanding of the impact of predictive testing for HD on young adults, and highlight issues unique to this population that call for further research, intervention and advocacy. 相似文献

Happiness-increasing interventions demonstrate significant variation in outcomes, suggesting that the people who use them might be as important as the interventions themselves to determine efficacy. In light of this, instructive interventions might not be necessary to increase happiness given a population with knowledge of happiness-increasing strategies. We recruited 270 participants with knowledge of positive psychology to receive six weeks of online psychoeducation. We explored participants’ use of the website, reported use of happiness strategies, and changes in well-being. Those who spent more time on the website reported smaller changes in well-being than those who spent less time on the website. Conversely, those who reported employing more happiness strategies reported greater increases in well-being than those who used fewer strategies. This shows that for those already familiar with positive psychology, information, rather than instruction, might increase well-being. This has implications for studies evaluating the efficacy of happiness-increasing interventions more broadly. 相似文献

It is well-established that parents of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience significant stress in their
caregiving role, and research findings indicate that chronic stressors can act as a precipitant to crisis. In the present
study, we examined the experience of crisis in families of individuals with ASD from early childhood to adulthood. One hundred
and fifty-seven comments provided by family members in response to an online survey were coded using grounded theory methods.
We explored three components of crisis drawn from the comments: antecedents (precipitating events and the context of crisis), behaviors (the nature of crisis), and consequences (outcomes and reactions to crisis). Similarities and differences in the crisis experiences among varying age groups are discussed,
