Five dichotic speech experiments were conducted with normal adult listeners in which the signal to one or both ears was degraded by manipulation of intensity, signal-to-noise ratio, or bandwidth parameters. Results suggest that: (1) performance of the ear (or ears) receiving the degraded signal can be predicted from the monaural identifiability of the stimuli, and (2) dichotic performance, at least in stop consonant-vowel tests, reflects an additive central process which combines speech information from the two ears.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted. In Experiment I, each of eight Ss attempted to place himself at 13 different goal orientations between prone and supine. Deviations of achieved body pitch angles from goal orientations were determined. In Experiment II, each of eight Ss attempted to align a visual target with his morphological horizon while he was placed at each of the 13 goal orientations. Changes in settings of the target were examined. Results indicate that Ss underestimate body pitch when they are tilted less than 60 deg backward or forward from the vertical, overestimate body pitch when they are nearly prone, and accurately estimate body pitch when they are nearly supine. In contrast, Ss set the visual target maximally above the morphological horizon when they are tilted 30 deg forward from the vertical. The findings are discussed in terms of common and different physiological mechanisms that may underlie judgments of these types.  相似文献

A system for mathematically identifying unknown nonlinear systems based upon Wiener kernels and G-functionals is presented as an example of the sophisticated analyses of electrophysiological and behavioral data made possible by the introduction of powerful digital computers to the laboratory environment. The applicability of these methods to a wide variety of systems is emphasized. By measuring the response of the unknown system to appropriate white noise stimulation, data may be obtained which are sufficient for the characterization of the system under test. The only restrictions upon the unknown system is that it be approximately stationary during the period of measurement and that its output depend upon its input in the finite past. Various pretests to evaluate the applicability of the method are presented. Simple FORTRAN programs that clarify the methods of computation are given for the preprocessing of data, the analysis of lower-order kernels, the synthesis of system response from the computed kernels, and the computation of the proportion of the variance in the systems output which is accounted for by the kernels zero, one, and two. These programs may be implemented on a digital laboratory computer of moderate size. Analysis may be performed either on-line or after data collection, depending upon the temporal characteristics of the system under test. This method represents one of the few analytical techniques presently available for the characterization of both linear and nonlinear systems. For this reason, it constitutes a uniquely powerful tool for many branches of psychology. Successful applications of this method to electrophysiological and behavioral data are mentioned. Limiting factors in the use of Wiener kernel analysis are also discussed.  相似文献

The swirl of change—instant history—coupled with contemporary human problems makes it imperative that counselors shed their complacencies and “truths” in order to doubt, question, and examine all that they now do. Counseling viewed as a highly complex, social-psychological phenomenon demands counselors who are applied behavioral scientists. Our outrageous wordology and one-method-one-technique orientation, along with confused “scientific-versus-humanistic” thinking, has severely impeded progress. Counseling should follow from client problems rather than be a predetermined, prescribed, and stylized activity. Social modeling in groups, systematic desensitization, and contingency management techniques are illustrative of how counselors can function as applied behavioral scientists.  相似文献

Recent views of science and technology have relied heavily on social network approaches. However, even within social network approaches, there are distinctive positions on international science and technology networks, depending on how boundaries and organizational processes are conceptualized. We contrast organizational approaches, exemplified by that of Shrum and Mullins, with geopolitical approaches, exemplified by Thomas Schott’s work. Problems and advantages of each approach are discussed. Finally, we propose that the difference between empirical levels of analysis and the part/whole distinction offers a preferable way of conceptualizing the micro-macro problem.  相似文献

Illustrates how standard epidemiologic principles form the knowledge base to justify a preventive intervention for an at-risk population. These principles were applied to a sample of 92 from the population of children aged 8 to 15 at alleged risk for mental health disorders because a parent died. Prior work on this alleged risk population is sparse and flawed. Validly determining the population effect of an alleged risk factor requires assessing the influence of sampling bias. The bias found, underrepresentation of deaths of a mother, did not influence the relations among death of a parent and children's depression and conduct disorder, and the modifiable mediators of risk to be changed by the preventive intervention. The epidemiologic measure of effect indicated that death of a parent is a risk factor for major depression but not for conduct disorder among youth. Families recruited for the preventive intervention by epidemiologic methods (ES families) did not differ significantly from the earlier families on whom the knowledge base was formed. Families referred to the intervention by self or others significantly differed from the ES families in two ways that constituted serious biases. The implications of these biases for prevention were discussed.  相似文献

A variety of written material was evaluated with five writing-assistance software packages. Three of the packages were found to be of limited value; they operated at a superficial level and cost much money. Of the remaining two, one was judged potentially valuable, although it was embedded in a larger system designed to teach writing to college students. The other one was judged a best buy on the basis of helpfulness to writers and minimal cost. Software is still no substitute for a good human editor.  相似文献
