In this article, we examine perceived breast cancer screening barriers and facilitative conditions for immigrant women from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, El Salvador, and South America ( N = 58). Focus groups conducted separately with women of each ancestry were analyzed using grounded theory methods. Identified barriers comprise secrecy, lack of information, embarrassment, fear, and distrust of health care providers. Perceived facilitative conditions include knowing the importance of early detection and noticing a symptom. We compare and contrast findings across ancestries and discuss how psychosocial and cultural factors could be better integrated into early detection programs. The women's high screening rates also suggest that breast cancer screening can be facilitated in this population by addressing institutional factors (e.g., access to health care, transportation). 相似文献

A survey of 87 Mexican migrants (55 males and 32 females) who have lived and worked in the US since 1982 assessed AIDS and condom-related knowledge, beliefs, and sexual practices. Although respondents were highly knowledgeable about major modes of HIV transmission, one-third to one-half believed that HIV could be contracted from mosquito bites, public bathrooms, kissing, and the HIV test. Only 15% knew someone with AIDS. Ever-use of condoms was reported by 70.9% of men and 41.9% of women. Of the 68 subjects who had been sexually active in the year preceding the survey, 20 reported two or more partners. Among sexually active respondents, 16.2% always used condoms with their primary partner, while 43.0% used condoms consistently with occasional partners. 48.9% of men and 57.1% of women never used condoms with their primary partner; with casual partners, these rates were 30.8% and 44.4%, respectively. Worry about contracting AIDS, self-rated on a scale from 1 (very often) to 4 (never), averaged 2.84, with higher worry scores among those 18-31 years of age and with multiple partners. Respondents did not anticipate negative consequences of condom use (e.g., reduced sexual pleasure), but females expressed concern that carrying condoms would cause them to be viewed as promiscuous. 相似文献

The authors state that social and political processes are continuously interrelated and modify each other in a circular fashion.
The economic variable seems to be the most independent and strategic one in the complex and circular causal process of contemporary
history. Its importance is due to the fact that economic forces have become the means that contribute the most to the attainment
of varied social and political goals.

The present study was aimed at replicating the results of a previous work on sex differences and electrodermal asymmetry from
our laboratory (Román,et al. 1987). Skin conductance was bilaterally recorded in a sample of 44 dextral volunteers (22 males and 22 females) during a
stimulus-free period, and the performance of two tasks (verbal and spatial). Subjects were grouped into two groups of right-hand
and left-hand dominance in their electrodermal responses (EDRs) in accordance with their laterality coefficient scores at
rest. During the tasks subjects appeareed clearly differentiated by their lateralization in the magnitude and frequency of
EDRs independently of gender: right-hand responders showed higher electrodermal activity on their right hand, while left-hand
responders showed higher electrodermal activity on their left hand. Sex differences were not observed within each responsiveness
pattern. The orientation of phasic electrodermal changes remained constant throughout the different conditions. 相似文献

The incidence of spontaneous anovulatory (SA) menstrual cycles among dysmenorrheic and non-dysmenorrheic women and their effects on symptomatology and mood were examined in 52 university students distributed into two groups (18 dysmenorrheic women and 34 non-dysmenorrheic women) according to the presence or absence of symptoms of primary dysmenorrhea. Women were tested in menstrual, ovulatory and premenstrual phases. In order to estimate the proportion of ovulatory and SA cycles the basal body temperature (BBT) method was used. Results indicated that the percentage of SA cycles found in dysmenorrheic women does not confirm that primary dysmenorrhea only occurs in ovulatory cycles. In addition, the ovulatory cycles did not present greater symptomatology than the anovulatory cycles in self-rating of negative affect. In fact, menstrual symptomatology was not associated with ovulatory cycles. These data confirm that primary dysmenorrhea does not only depend on the endocrine factors which regulate the menstrual cycle but also on other factors such as social or psychological ones. 相似文献

This paper examines individual and organizational resilience processes among members of The Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan, (RAWA), an Afghan women's underground resistance organization located in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Since 1977, RAWA has used humanitarian and political means to educate, serve, and motivate women and to advocate for peace, secular democracy, and human rights. The authors analyzed 110 qualitative interviews, collected in Pakistan and Afghanistan between December 2001 and July 2002. An iterative coding framework identified processes of resilience and domain specific stressors (risks) and resources (protective factors) at the individual and organizational level. Further analysis found that these process codes clustered by function into components of an operational model of individual and organizational resilience. While individual and organizational resilience are described by the same model, these two levels of resilience were found to operate in synergy as well as in conflict. Although this paper explores a unique setting, we argue that a better understanding of resilience processes in general will come from increased attention to context. 相似文献

The purpose of this study is to explore the role of sex differences and personality in vulnerability to depression. Sex differences in personality and some clinical variables are described. We also assess the value of the variables that revealed significant sex differences as predictors of vulnerability to depression. In a group of adult participants (N = 112), 50% males and 50% females (mean age = 41.30; SD = 15.09; range 17-67), we studied sex differences in the three-factor personality model, using the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire, Form A (EPQ-A; Eysenck & Eysenck, 1975), and in the Five-Factor Personality Model, with the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI; Costa & McCrae, 1985). The following clinical scales were used: the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI; Beck, Rush, Shaw, & Emery, 1979), the Schizotypy Questionnaire (STQ; Claridge & Broks, 1984; Spanish version, Carrillo & Rojo, 1999), the THARL Scales (Dua, 1989, 1990; Spanish version, Dua & Carrillo, 1994) and the Adjustment Inventory (Bell, 1937; Spanish version, Cerdá, 1980). Subsequently, simple linear regression analysis, with BDI scores as criterion, were performed to estimate the value of the variables as predictors of vulnerability to depression. The results indicate that a series of personality variables cause women to be more vulnerable to depression than men and that these variables could be explained by a negative emotion main factor. Results are discussed within the framework of the psychological behaviorism theory of depression. 相似文献

Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is the positive psychological growth that a person might experience after enduring a traumatic event. PTG is a relatively new area of research identified by researchers because it represents a shift in thinking. Rather than focusing on the negative consequences of trauma, it explores the potential for positive outcomes associated with trauma. Although PTG is well documented across different types of traumas, it is unclear how this kind of growth stems from sexual violence, specifically. This review provides an overview of the literature concerning PTG that is associated with sexual violence. Results across the literature indicate that sexual violence is consistently associated with PTG. However, given the inconsistency in research designs, assessment, and operational definitions used to study PTG, many researchers suggest that it might be difficult to determine how and when PTG occurs. This study provides a literature review of the research on PTG in the aftermath of sexual violence. Important implications for future directions and trauma-based therapy are discussed and include the identification of relevant predictors, the importance of context, and how service providers might benefit from a better understanding of PTG. 相似文献

Family policy initiatives in Colombia and Ecuador have targeted primarily families living in poverty. This paper discusses
some of the major policy initiatives oriented to improve the living conditions of economically disadvantaged families in both
countries. We argue that, even though governments recognize the importance of family policies, existing policies and programs
for families living in poverty do not directly focus on family issues. They represent more implicit than explicit family policies.
We analyze some of the issues that may hinder the development, implementation, and evaluation of family policies in Colombia
and Ecuador. Such issues stem from political and economic instability, legislation, changing family demographics, as well
as coordination among agencies that develop, implement, and evaluate policies. We discuss challenges related to family policies
in both countries and recommendations to improve existing policy initiatives. 相似文献

This paper analyses the way in which discourse and argumentation may vary depending on participants educational level and gender. Men and women from three different educational levels (literacy, advanced level and university students) participated in discussion groups that debated about women and work, the sharing of housework and the way in which girls and boys are educated. The results showed important differences depending on participants educational level and gender. In general, the main differences were related to educational level, while gender tended to interact with educational level, as a moderating factor. 相似文献
