Ressourcing the Fathers? A Critical Analysis of Catherine Mowry LaCugna's Appropriation of the Trinitarian Theology of the Cappadocian Fathers

Abstract:  Often as part of the so-called 'revival' in trinitarian theology, the Cappadocian Fathers are ressourced to justify a 'social' and 'relational' way of thinking about God's triuneness. The goal of this article is to explore this social trinitarian ressourcement of the Cappadocian Fathers by comparing the Cappadocians' theology to that of Catherine Mowry LaCugna, who claims the Cappadocians articulated a more fully trinitarian theology by emphasizing the plurality of the divine 'persons' as 'relations'. My conclusion is that the ontological and epistemological differences between LaCugna and the Cappadocians, coupled with the opposing purposes of their respective trinitarian theologies, create a discontinuity between the two projects that is too great for LaCugna to ressource the Cappadocians in any positive manner in her own trinitarian theology.     

A Conversation Analysis of the ‘Acquiescence’ of People with Learning Disabilities

Contrary to received wisdom, ‘acquiescence bias’ in the responses of people with learning disabilities to questioning is not a simple phenomenon, and certainly not one to be laid at the door solely of people with learning disabilities themselves. Rather, it is probably an artefact of the conversational organization of interviews as tests. Analysis of Quality of Life assessment interviews show, we argue, that there is probably no uniform ‘acquiescent’ motivation which accounts for all inconsistencies and agreements that might be produced under such circumstances. Rather, the interview's logic produces a range of pseudo-acquiescent responses in the face of interviewers reformulations, and their pursuit of plausible and acceptable answers. There is also evidence of ‘anti-acquiescence’, in which respondents resist pressure to change their answers. We conclude that the traditional notion of submissive, willing-to-please acquiescence is probably unsustainable on current evidence, and ought to be replaced by a more respectful account of the linguistic and interpersonal competence of people with learning disabilities.     

THE EFFECTS OF HAVING BEEN SUPERVISED BY A WOMAN ON PERCEPTIONS OF FEMALE MANAGERIAL COMPETENCE1

Responses of male and female managers in state public human service organizations are analyzed to determine if perceptual differences exist concerning the competence of women as managers in these organizations depending on whether an individual has or has not been supervised by a woman. Significant differences were found in only one area: the motivation of women to manage.     

Induction into Mate-Swapping: A Review

The question of how and why people become involved in co-marital sexual mate-swapping is examined in the larger context of familial behavior. The literature on other areas of sexuality are tapped for possible explanations of the mate-swapper phenomenon.     

ORGANIZATIONS AS COMMUNICATION STRUCTURES: AN EMPIRICAL APPROACH1

This research has the limited objectives of exploring the similarity among several organizational communication and formal organizational structural variables, showing the dynamic nature of organizational structure when viewed in a communication perspective, and providing a way of viewing organizations in which the mechanisms used to aggregate initial building blocks to provide pictures of organizations are clear. Three organizations were mapped in communication terms. The results of the mappings were used to suggest directions for future research in organizational communication.     

BRUTE FACTS,THE NECESSITY OF IDENTITY,AND THE IDENTITY OF INDISCERNIBLES

In ‘Two Spheres, Twenty Spheres, and the Identity of Indiscernibles,’ Della Rocca argues that any counterexample to the PII would involve ‘a brute fact of non‐identity [. . .] not grounded in any qualitative difference.’ I respond that Adams's so‐called Continuity Argument against the PII does not postulate qualitatively inexplicable brute facts of identity or non‐identity if understood in the context of Kripkean modality. One upshot is that if the PII is understood to quantify over modal as well as non‐modal properties, the qualitative explicability of numerical distinctness requires not the PII but a principle of the identity of necessary indiscernibles.
