Declining communication skills in dementia threaten a person's sense of self. Building on enduring capabilities, pastoral visitors can significantly enhance spiritual well-being through the use of individualized, person-centered strategies. This article outlines the primary spiritual needs of older adults with dementia and some general strategies to improve communication based on enduring abilities. Although it is widely known that brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex, the amygdala, and the ventral striatum play
large roles in decision making, their precise contributions remain unclear. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging
and principles of reinforcement learning theory to investigate the relationship between current reinforcements and future
decisions. In the experiment, subjects chose between high-risk (i.e., low probability of a large monetary reward) and low-risk
(high probability of a small reward) decisions. For each subject, we estimated value functions that represented the degree
to which reinforcements affected the value of decision options on the subsequent trial. Individual differences in value functions
predicted not only trial-to-trial behavioral strategies, such as choosing high-risk decisions following high-risk rewards,
but also the relationship between activity in prefrontal and subcortical regions during one trial and the decision made in
the subsequent trial. These findings provide a novel link between behavior and neural activity by demonstrating that value
functions are manifested both in adjustments in behavioral strategies and in the neural activity that accompanies those adjustments. 相似文献

The neuronal system to process and transfer auditory information to the higher motor areas was investigated using fMRI. Two
different types of internal modulation of auditory pacing (1 Hz) were combined to design a 2×2 condition experiment, and the
activation was compared with that under a visual guidance. The bilateral anterior portion of the BA22 (ant-BA22) and the left
BA41/42 were more extensively activated by the combined modulation condition under the auditory cue than that under the visual
cue. Among the four auditory conditions with or without the two types of internal modulation, the activation in the ant-BA22
was augmented only on the left side by the combined modulation condition. The left ant-BA22 may be especially involved in
integrating the external auditory cue with internal modulation, while the activation on the right side did not depend on the
complexity. The role of the left BA41/42 in motor regulation may be more specific to the processing of an auditory cue than
that on the right side. These two areas in the left temporal lobe may be organized as a subsystem to handle the timing of
complex movements under auditory cues, while the higher motor areas in the frontal lobe support both sensory modalities for
the cue. This architecture may be considered as ‘audio-motor control’, which is similar to the visuo-motor control of the

The odd-even effect is a well documented finding in the literature on mental arithmetic, at least for multiplication. It implies that false answers with the same parity as the correct answer are rejected more slowly than false answers with a different parity. For addition, this effect is not so well documented. The study by Krueger and Hallford (1984) is the only one that investigated odd-even effects for addition. However, they did not investigate odd-even effects per problem, even though there are indications that problem type can modulate odd-even effects for multiplication (Lemaire & Reder, 1999). Therefore, we wanted to get more insight into odd-even effects for addition by investigating odd-even effects per problem type. Our results extended the findings of Krueger and Hallford. First of all, we found an interaction between split and problem type. The most important and new result of present study, however, was a strong parity effect for E + E problems. We discuss our results in terms of two alternative explanations for odd-even effects, namely use of a parity rule on the one hand and familiarity with even outcomes on the other. 相似文献

A number of studies have shown that the scale of social dominance orientation (SDO), used to measure the degree of preference
for inequality among social groups, is a predictive measure of social and political attitudes toward stigmatized outgroups.
However, the relationship between SDO and discrimination has received little attention. The main goal of this study was to
assess the validity of a new computer-based method used to measure discriminatory behaviors in a laboratory setting. An additional
goal was to test the mediating role of prejudice in the relation between SDO and discrimination. The results provide a first

We investigated individual differences in susceptibility to two vibration-induced phantom illusions, i.e. illusory arm extension and nose prolongation (“Pinocchio illusion”). Vibration was applied to the biceps brachii tendon of 32 healthy participants. Susceptibility to the illusions was quantified by vividness ratings and by ratings of the amount of illusory position changes of the arm and illusory shape changes of the nose. Participants also completed the Perceptual Aberration (PA) and the Need for Cognition (NFC) inventories. PA reflects the frequency of spontaneously experienced body schema alterations and NFC a person's tendency to cognitively structure experiences. PA was positively correlated with participants’ susceptibility to illusory arm extension and, exclusively for men, also to nose elongation. A high NFC was weakly associated with a high susceptibility for the Pinocchio illusion. By inference, these findings indicate a physiological basis of PA and a cognitive mediation of experimentally induced phantom sensations. 相似文献

We investigated whether people are able to detect in a relatively automatic manner the dominant or submissive status of persons engaged in social interactions. We used a nonaffective variant of the affective Simon paradigm of De Houwer and Eelen (1998) in which participants responded by saying either "dominant" or "submissive" depending on the right or left spatial position of a target person who was engaged as either the dominant or the submissive agent in a social interaction. We observed that responses were facilitated when the status connotation of the target person and the correct response corresponded.
