Critics of John McDowell's Mind and World have by and large failed to take sufficient notice of the transcendental context within which McDowell situates his work—a failure that has adversely affected their criticisms. In this paper, I make clear this transcendental context and show how it figures in the transcendental argument I see McDowell offering in Mind and World. Interpreting McDowell's argument in this way, I further argue, helps to answer some of the most pressing objections to what he is doing in Mind and World, particularly certain objections made by Robert Brandom and Hilary Putnam. 相似文献

The present study seeks to understand how social comparison information may be used to provide individuals with information about their level of risk and to promote health behavior. The effect of peer comparison information, presented alone or in the context of expert recommendations, was examined across two studies using distinct experimental manipulations. Study 1 showed that regardless of whether expert standards were available or not, participants who were provided with inflated estimates of peer flossing behavior demonstrated increased behavioral intentions and increased flossing behavior measured 3 months later. This pattern was replicated in Study 2 with effects on attitudes toward flossing and intentions to floss. These findings add to a growing literature identifying comparative feedback as distinct from objective information and are discussed in terms of implications for health promotion and risk communication. The present theory-driven, empirical evaluation examined cross-sectional influences on men’s engagement in risky body change behaviors. The study tested a slightly revised version of the Tripartite Influence Model (Thompson et al. 1999) with a sample of 156 male undergraduate students from the Midwestern Region of the United States. Participants completed measures pertaining to body image and health-risk behaviors. Consistent with the Tripartite Influence Model (Thompson et al. 1999), individual psychological variables mediated the association between sociocultural influences and muscularity-oriented body dissatisfaction. Body dissatisfaction mediated the relation between psychological variables and engagement in body change behaviors. Theoretical models developed to explain body change behaviors among women may be applicable to men when constructs are assessed in ways that are relevant to men. 相似文献

Hooking up on college campuses has become more frequent than dating in heterosexual sexual interaction. Analysis of the relative benefits and costs associated with dating and hooking up suggest that women benefit more from dating while men benefit more from hooking up. U.S students (150 women, 71 men) at a midsized southeastern university indicated preferences for dating and hooking up across a number of situations and indicated the perceived benefits and risks associated with each. As hypothesized, in most situations women more than men preferred dating and men more than women preferred hooking up. Both genders perceived similar benefits and risks to dating and hooking up; differences provided insight into the sexual motives of college women and men. 相似文献

This study investigated the social preference and social prominence of 622 5th graders (290 boys, 332 girls) in relation to
peer group membership. The sample was recruited from 11 elementary schools in a southeastern state. The ethnicity of participants
was 55% European American, 41% African American, and 4% other. Peer groups were classified on each of three domains (academic,
aggression, popular) by the proportion of group members who were high on the characteristic of interest. Participants’ peer
affiliations were also classified with cluster analytic techniques that yielded distinct configurations of aggression, popularity,
and academic competence. Social preference and social prominence were each related to popular peer group type for both boys
and girls and differentially related to aggressive and academic group types. Social prominence, but not social preference,
was related to peer group configurations for both girls and boys. Implications for the development of social contextual interventions
to support students’ adjustment and academic engagement during late elementary school are discussed. 相似文献
