The military environment has unique stressors. This study investigates the types of stressors, appraisals, and coping responses of U.S. soldiers and their leaders. A qualitative analysis of interviews indicates that the traditional coping buffers of social drinking and seeking social support from fellow soldiers, family, and leaders can potentially serve as sources of stress. While this paradox may be a result of the unique types of stressors in the military work environment, these results should direct researchers to better understand individuals' perceptions and appraisals of stress, with a focus on the meaning of stress, given contextual factors inherent in the workplace. The findings are discussed in relation to the literature on the impact of stress on physical and psychological health. 相似文献

Parents of young children with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) maintain full responsibility for their child’s daily diabetes self-care
and thus may be vulnerable to experiencing parenting stress. This study examined several psychological correlates of pediatric
parenting stress in parents of young children with T1DM. Parents of 39 young children with T1DM (ages 2–7 years) completed
measures of pediatric parenting stress, mealtime behavior problems, depressive symptoms, and fear of hypoglycemia. For parents
of young children, higher stress frequency and difficulty were associated with higher parental depressive symptoms and fear.
Regression analyses identified that 58% of the variance in stress frequency was associated with parental depressive symptoms.
For stress difficulty, 68% of the variance was associated with parental depressive symptoms and fear. Pediatric parenting
stress is common in parents of young children with T1DM. Stress and the psychological correlates measured in this study are
amenable to intervention and should be regularly assessed in parents of young children with T1DM. 相似文献

Action-outcome contingencies can be learnt either by active trial-and-error, or vicariously, by observing the outcomes of actions performed by others. The extant literature is ambiguous as to which of these modes of learning is more effective, as controlled comparisons of operant and observational learning are rare. Here, we contrasted human operant and observational value learning, assessing implicit and explicit measures of learning from positive and negative reinforcement. Compared to direct operant learning, we show observational learning is associated with an optimistic over-valuation of low-value options, a pattern apparent both in participants’ choice preferences and their explicit post-hoc estimates of value. Learning of higher value options showed no such bias. We suggest that such a bias can be explained as a tendency for optimistic underestimation of the chance of experiencing negative events, an optimism repressed when information is gathered through direct operant learning. 相似文献

In order to fulfill ABET requirements, Northern Arizona University’s Civil and Environmental engineering programs incorporate
professional ethics in several of its engineering courses. This paper discusses an ethics module in a 3rd year engineering
design course that focuses on the design process and technical writing. Engineering students early in their student careers
generally possess good black/white critical thinking skills on technical issues. Engineering design is the first time students
are exposed to “grey” or multiple possible solution technical problems. To identify and solve these problems, the engineering
design process is used. Ethical problems are also “grey” problems and present similar challenges to students. Students need
a practical tool for solving these ethical problems. The step-wise engineering design process was used as a model to demonstrate
a similar process for ethical situations. The ethical decision making process of Martin and Schinzinger was adapted for parallelism
to the design process and presented to students as a step-wise technique for identification of the pertinent ethical issues,
relevant moral theories, possible outcomes and a final decision. Students had greatest difficulty identifying the broader,
global issues presented in an ethical situation, but by the end of the module, were better able to not only identify the broader
issues, but also to more comprehensively assess specific issues, generate solutions and a desired response to the issue. 相似文献

Multinomial processing tree models form a popular class of statistical models for categorical data that have applications
in various areas of psychological research. As in all statistical models, establishing which parameters are identified is
necessary for model inference and selection on the basis of the likelihood function, and for the interpretation of the results.
The required calculations to establish global identification can become intractable in complex models. We show how to establish
local identification in multinomial processing tree models, based on formal methods independently proposed by Catchpole and
Morgan (1997) and by Bekker, Merckens, and Wansbeek (1994). This approach is illustrated with multinomial processing tree

Basic research with pigeons on behavioral momentum suggests that differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) can increase the resistance of target behavior to change. This finding suggests that clinical applications of DRA may inadvertently increase the persistence of target behavior even as it decreases its frequency. We conducted three coordinated experiments to test whether DRA has persistence-strengthening effects on clinically significant target behavior and then tested the effectiveness of a possible solution to this problem in both a nonhuman and clinical study. Experiment 1 compared resistance to extinction following baseline rates of reinforcement versus higher DRA rates of reinforcement in a clinical study. Resistance to extinction was substantially greater following DRA. Experiment 2 tested a rat model of a possible solution to this problem. Training an alternative response in a context without reinforcement of the target response circumvented the persistence-strengthening effects of DRA. Experiment 3 translated the rat model into a novel clinical application of DRA. Training an alternative response with DRA in a separate context resulted in lower resistance to extinction than employing DRA in the context correlated with reinforcement of target behavior. The majority of individuals exposed to trauma do not go on to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD); thus, researchers have sought to identify individual difference variables that make one particularly susceptible to posttraumatic stress symptoms. Trait anxiety is one individual difference variable implicated in the pathogenesis of posttraumatic stress symptoms. Following from cognitive theories of anxiety and extant data, the purpose of the present study was to examine executive attention as a moderator of the relation between trait anxiety and posttraumatic stress symptoms, particularly hyperarousal symptoms, among undergraduate women reporting trauma exposure (N = 88). As predicted, executive attention moderated the association between trait anxiety and hyperarousal symptoms, such that there was a significantly weaker relation as executive attention increased. Study results further support the potential buffering effect of executive attention in relation to posttraumatic stress symptoms, as well as the possible importance of targeting executive attention following trauma exposure. 相似文献

This study examined procedures for the assessment and treatment of automatically reinforced vocal stereotypy of a 6‐year‐old girl with autism. Stimulus assessments were conducted to identify toys that were correlated with higher rates of vocal stereotypy and toys that were not. A concurrent operants assessment identified preferred stimuli (toys that produced auditory stimulation), which were then used as reinforcers for the non‐occurrence of vocal stereotypy. A reversal design was used to compare the effects of a fixed time schedule of reinforcement (FT 1‐min) to differential reinforcement for the non‐occurrence of behavior (DRO) to reduce vocal stereotypy. Implementation of the FT schedule revealed no effect, whereas the DRO schedule led to a reduction in the target behavior during treatment sessions and across the school day. It has been suggested that the performance of preferred modes of exercise will serve to maximize the affective response to exercise. Support has come from work that has shown the effect of exercise on affect to be mediated by enjoyment. However, there is a need to compare modes of exercise that differ in preference and enjoyment, yet are similar in intensity, duration and muscle group. This experiment was designed to achieve this aim. Thirty-four college-aged women completed 20 minutes of exercise on high and low preference modes of continuous exercise. Intensity was maintained at 65–75% of HRR. Affect was measured by the PANAS, collected prior to and at 5, 20, and 40 min post exercise. Results provided partial support for the hypothesis as mode preference moderated the improvement in positive affect, with no effect on the reduction in negative affect. Interestingly, regardless of mode preference, enjoyment ratings were found to mediate the change in both positive and negative affect. 相似文献

There is increasing interest in subjective well-being (SWB) both in academic and policy circles. As a result, considerable research efforts are now being directed at the validity and reliability of SWB measures. This study examines how SWB reports differ by survey mode. Using data from the April 2011 to March 2012 Annual Population Survey in the UK we find that individuals consistently report higher SWB over the phone compared to face-to-face interviews. We also show that the determinants of SWB differ significantly by mode, with life circumstances tending to matter more in face-to-face interviews. These results have substantial implications for research and policy purposes. 相似文献
