Since 11 September 2001 and the anthrax attacks that followed in the US, public and policy concerns about the security threats
posed by biological weapons have increased significantly. With this has come an expansion of those activities in civil society
deemed as potential sites for applying security controls. This paper examines the assumptions and implications of national
and international efforts in one such area: how a balance or integration can take place between security and openness in civilian
biomedical research through devising professional codes of conduct for scientists. Future attempts to establish such codes
must find a way of reconciling or at least addressing dilemmatic and tension-ridden issues about the appropriateness of research;

Eleven children with early focal lesions were compared with 70 age-matched controls to assess their performance in repeating non-words, in learning new words, and in immediate serial recall, a triad of abilities that are believed to share a dependence on serial ordering mechanisms (e.g.,; ). Results for the experimental group were also compared with other assessments previously reported for the same children by. The children with brain injury showed substantial impairment relative to controls in the experimental tasks, in contrast with relatively unimpaired performance on measures of vocabulary and non-verbal intelligence. The relationships between word learning, non-word repetition, and immediate serial recall were similar to those observed in several other populations. These results support previous reports that there are persistent processing impairments following early brain injury, despite developmental plasticity. They also suggest that word learning, non-word repetition, and immediate serial recall may be relatively demanding tasks, and that their relationship is a fundamental aspect of the cognitive system. 相似文献

Despite the intense debate surrounding the use of orthographic analogy in the clue word paradigm, little is known about the skills and strategies children actually use and how these compare with their everyday reading of single words. This study, with 4- and 5-year-olds (N=125), supports previous work which suggests children rely on phonological, rather than orthographic, priming in the clue word task since children most frequently produced rhyming words in response to the clue word. The extent to which phoneme and rhyme-based skills, along with letter-sound knowledge, predicted children's performance in the analogy task and in a test of single word reading was contrasted and compared. Our findings suggested that the balance of skills which children drew upon was determined by the demands of the task. The implications of these findings for the validity of the 'orthographic'-analogy task and for teaching beginning readers is discussed. 相似文献

Searching night and day: a dissociation of effects of circadian phase and time awake on visual selective attention and vigilance 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
How does sleepiness affect selective attention? We studied the effect of circadian phase and time awake on visual search. The generalized-cognitive-slowing hypothesis predicts that search rate will be slower, feature guidance less effective, and response time (RT) lengthened when observers are sleepy. Observers performed spatial-configuration (finding a 5 among 2s) and conjunction (finding red vertical among red horizontal and green vertical) search tasks during 38 hr of wakefulness under constant conditions. Adverse circadian phases and elapsed time awake did lead to increased RT (corrected for errors). However, contrary to the hypothesis, search rates (indexed by RT x Set Size slopes) were constant across the protocol. This was true for conjunction as well as for spatial-configuration search, indicating that feature guidance was also insensitive to sleepiness. The locus of sleepiness effects on search is probably downstream from the bottleneck of attentional selection. Observers did trade accuracy for speed when sleepy. Previous research has made a beginning in addressing the importance of methodological differences in Web-based research. The
present paper presents four studies investigating whether sample type, financial incentives, time when personal information
is requested, table design, and method of obtaining informed consent influence dropout and sample characteristics(both demographics
and measured attitudes). Undergraduates were less likely to drop out than nonstudents, and nonstudents offered a financial
incentive were less likely to drop out than those offered no incentive. Complex tables, tables that were too wide, requests
for personal information on the first page, and the imposing of additional informed consent procedures each provoked early
dropout. As was expected, nonstudents and those presented with complex tables showed more measurement error and attitude differences.
Asking for personal information and imposing additional consent procedures affected the demographic makeup, raising challenges

Perceptual implicit memory for previously attended and unattended words was measured either in a word-stem completion task or in a perceptual fluency (perceptual identification) task. Subjects (N = 144) first engaged in a focused attention task in which they were to identify one of two words presented for 100, 200, or 300 msec. Words were classified as attended if they were reported during the focused attention task and unattended if they were not. Results for both implicit memory tests indicated reliable perceptual implicit memory for attended words but not for unattended words, regardless of focused attention exposure duration. The results indicate that perceptual implicit memory tasks reflect attentional encoding processes; that is, words must undergo attentional encoding if they are to affect performance on a later perceptual implicit memory test. 相似文献

Much of the literature on ceteris paribus laws is based on a misguided egalitarianism about the sciences. For example, it
is commonly held that the special sciences are riddled with ceteris paribus laws; from this many commentators conclude that
if the special sciences are not to be accorded a second class status, it must be ceteris paribus all the way down to fundamental
physics. We argue that the (purported) laws of fundamental physics are not hedged by ceteris paribus clauses and provisos.
Furthermore, we show that not only is there no persuasive analysis of the truth conditions for ceteris paribus laws, there
is not even an acceptable account of how they are to be saved from triviality or how they are to be melded with standard scientific
methodology. Our way out of this unsatisfactory situation to reject the widespread notion that the achievements and the scientific
status of the special sciences must be understood in terms of ceteris paribus laws.

We investigated the perceptual grouping of sequentially presented sounds--auditory stream segregation. It is well established that sounds heard as more similar in quality, or timbre, are more likely to be grouped into the same auditory stream. However, it is often unclear exactly what acoustic factors determine timbre. In this study, we presented various sequences of simple sounds, each comprising two frequency components (two-tone complexes), and measured their perceptual grouping. We varied only one parameter between trials, the intercomponent separation for some of the complexes, and examined the effects on stream segregation. Four hypotheses are presented that might predict the extent of streaming. Specifically, least streaming might be expected when the sounds were most similar in either (1) the frequency regions in which they have energy (maximum spectral overlap), (2) their auditory bandwidths, (3) their relative bandwidths, or (4) the rate at which the two components beat together (intermodulation rate). It was found that least streaming occurred when sounds were most similar in either their auditory or their relative bandwidths. Although these two hypotheses could not be distinguished, the results were clearly different from those predicted by hypotheses (1) and (4). The implications for models of stream segregation are discussed. 相似文献
