This study examined relationships between socioenvironmental factors occurring in later-life and current and changing PTSD symptom levels in a sample of 177 community-dwelling World War II and Korean era ex–prisoners of war. Factors examined included negative life events, negative health events, social support, and death acceptance. PTSD was assessed at Time 1. PTSD and the later-life factors were then assessed 4 years later (Time 2). Cross-sectional analysis examined the relationship of the later-life factors to current PTSD symptomatology. Longitudinal analysis examined their relationship to changing PTSD symptomatology over the 4-year interval. Negative health changes, social support, and death acceptance were significantly related to current and changing PTSD symptomatology, but negative life events were not. The authors conclude that health and psychosocial factors that may occur in later-life can be related to PTSD symptom levels even many decades after a traumatic experience. 相似文献

The article is a reflection on what I perceive to be a confusion about the relation between theoretical judgments and judgments of pedagogical efficacy. My interest in the issue originated with my own confusion over persistent student resistance to certain assigned texts that I had initially felt confident would prove valuable in the classroom. The essay unfolds in three segments. In the first, I recount how this concern about the relation between theoretical judgments and judgments of pedagogical efficacy evolved out of my own teaching. I next list three tentative conclusions about the correlation or lack of correlation between theoretical judgments and judgments of pedagogical efficacy. In the concluding segment, I call for concerted resistance to the tendency of pure rationality to colonize the aesthetic and dramatic components of experience so essential to transformative teaching and learning. 相似文献

Students, faculty, and researchers have become increasingly comfortable with the Internet, and many of them are interestedin using the Web to collectdata. Few published studies have investigated the differences between Web-based data and data collected with more traditional methods. In order to investigate these potential differences, two important factors were crossed in this study: whether the data were collected on line or not and whether the data were collected in a group setting at a fixed time or individually at a time of the respondent’s choosing. The Visions of Morality scale (Shelton & McAdams, 1990) was used, and the participants were assigned to one of four conditions: in-class Web survey, in-class paper-and-pencil survey; take-home Web survey, and take-home paper-and-pencil survey. No significant differences in scores were found for any condition; however, response rates were affected by the type of survey administered, with the take-home Web-based instrument having the lowest response rate. Therefore, researchers need to be aware that different modes of administration may affect subject attrition and may, therefore, confound investigations of other independent variables. 相似文献

The cerebellum and related brainstem structures are essential for excitatory eyeblink conditioning. Recent evidence indicates
that the cerebellar interpositus and lateral pontine nuclei may also play critical roles in conditioned inhibition (CI) of
the eyeblink response. The current study examined the role of GABAergic inhibition of the interpositus nucleus in retention
of CI. Male Long-Evans rats were implanted with a cannula positioned just above or in the anterior interpositus nucleus before
training. The rats were trained with two different tones and a light as conditioned stimuli, and a periorbital shock as the
unconditioned stimulus. CI training consisted of four phases: 1) excitatory conditioning (8 kHz tone paired with shock); 2)
feature-negative discrimination (2 kHz tone paired with shock or 2 kHz tone concurrent with light); 3) summation test (8 kHz
tone or 8 kHz tone concurrent with light); and 4) retardation test (light paired with shock) After reaching a criterion level
of performance on the feature-negative discrimination (40% discrimination), 0.5 μl picrotoxin (a GABAA receptor antagonist) was infused at one of four concentrations, each concentration infused during separte test sessions.
Picrotoxin transiently impaired conditioned responses during trials with the excitatory stimulus (tone) in a dose-dependent
manner, but did not significantly impact responding to the inhibitory compound stimulus (tone-light). The results suggest
that expression of conditioned inhibition of the eyeblink conditioned response does not require GABAergic inhibition of neurons

The present study explored the relations of perceived family-of-origin interaction patterns (e.g., quality of family relationships, family-supported goal orientations, and degree of control and organization in the family) to vocational identity and career decision-making self-efficacy. A sample of 210 college students completed family-of-origin and vocational self-report measures. Using standard multiple regression analyses, significant variance was accounted for in vocational identity scores by achievement orientation in the family. Significant variance in career decision-making self-efficacy scores was accounted for by a number of family variables including achievement, intellectual-cultural, and moral-religious emphasis orientations and degree of family conflict and expressiveness. The findings suggest that family-of-origin interaction patterns may play small, yet significant roles in the formulation of clear and stable career goals and the promotion of self-confidence in regard to completing career planning activities. These findings warrant further empirical examination of the family systems approach to young adult career development. 相似文献

The purpose of this research was to examine the extent to which social support and wider community perceptions/engagements among adolescents are connected with well‐being. We compared adolescents in two different societal contexts, Florida in the United States and County Offaly, in Ireland, and posed the questions: What are the key predictors of subjective well‐being from the various sources of support, and to what extent does the impact of social support on well‐being vary across these two societies? Questionnaires were completed and returned for 607 respondents (322 in the Irish study and 285 in the Florida study). A variety of scales were adopted and designed to operationalize our key concepts of: Adolescent well‐being, social support, school satisfaction, neighbourhood quality of life and community/voluntary participation. Our results indicate that informal social support and school satisfaction were the strongest predictors of youth well‐being in both locations, despite some differences in terms of individual influencing variables. From informal sources, emotional support from friends and advice/concrete/esteem support from parents emerged as important predictive dimensions. Liking school, perceptions of doing well in school were the main predictors of school satisfaction in Ireland while, in Florida, student camaraderie and the experience of bullying emerged as significant. It is not unusual for researchers in ethnography (and sometimes Institutional Review Boards) to assume that research of “public”
behavior is morally unproblematic. I examine an historical case of ethnographic research and the sustained moral outrage to
the research expressed by the subjects of that research. I suggest that the moral outrage was legitimate and articulate some
of the ethical issues underlying that outrage. I argue that morally problematic Ethnographic research of public behavior can
derive from research practice that includes a tendency to collapse the distinction between harm and moral wrong, a failure
to take account of recent work on ethical issues in privacy; failure to appreciate the deception involved in ethnographers’
failure to reveal their role as researchers to subjects and finally a failure to appropriately weigh the moral significance
of issues of invasion of privacy and inflicted insight in both the research process and subsequent publication of research.

Recently, the media have expressed concern about the apparent concentration and social isolation of immigrants in central and inner suburban neighborhoods in large Canadian cities. This paper compares and contrasts the frequency and nature of neighborhood-based social contacts among three cohorts of immigrants distinguished by their period of arrival in Canada and Canadian-born individuals. We begin by outlining the family, friend, and acquaintance relationships that immigrants build and argue that their networks are culturally diverse and dominated by acquaintances. In this context, intense friendships rarely develop between neighbors, even for recent newcomers. Rather, neighboring consists mainly of casual interactions between individuals that often involve the provision of mundane forms of assistance. Despite their fleeting and routine qualities, social relations with neighbors lead the vast majority of people to express strong levels of belonging to their neighborhoods. As a consequence, we argue that the neighborhood is an underestimated locale for understanding social inclusion. 相似文献

In the face of the business community’s widening concern about corporate ethical behavior, business schools are reexamining
how they ensure that students appreciate the ethical implications of managerial decision making and have the analytical tools
necessary to confront ethical dilemmas. The current approaches adopted by colleges vary from mere ‘lip service’ to embedding
ethics at the core of the curriculum. This paper examines the experience of several US universities that have incorporated
business ethics into their curricula. In particular, the paper describes the issues facing Central Washington University as
it seeks to integrate ethical decision making into its core undergraduate business curriculum. Issues addressed include the
technical challenges of establishing a common element of curriculum across the various business disciplines, determining the
major conceptual foundations of ‘ethical thinking’ while recognizing students’ existing value systems, and how to obtain ‘buy
