Whilst community psychology has encouraged discussion of research processes and ways to improve studies, certain issues within community‐based research (particularly on sex topics) still require attention. This paper outlines a community study of women involved in street prostitution, and discusses issues arising from this research. By using extracts from the research report, along with researcher's diaries and taped conversations, the paper raises points for discussion concerning the process of sex‐research. For instance, training peer researchers, incorporating sex‐workers in research strategies, producing tangible results, and ethical issues. Strategies to improve research in general are then suggested. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

The interrelationships among racial discrimination, non race-based rejection, racial identity (RI), and alcohol cognitions and use were assessed in this research. In Study 1, individuals who experienced overt discrimination and who were high in RI were less likely than those low in RI to meet criteria for alcohol abuse disorder. In Study 2, discrimination and rejection were causally related to a faster reaction time in a lexical decision task to alcohol-related concepts as compared to neutral words, especially for those low in RI. Implications of discrimination and rejection on substance use and other risky health behaviors are discussed. 相似文献

The goal of 2 studies was to develop a psychophysical model of informal covariation assessment. The results of Experiment 1 suggest that mean covariation estimates are a function of the ratio of the lengths of the major and minor principal-components axes of correlated bivariate data. In Experiment 2, multidimensional scaling showed that observers perceived (a) the lengths of the major and minor principal-components axes and (b) the slope and dispersion of correlated data. The focal stimulus for mean covariation estimates was the ratio of the major and minor principal-components axes. Moreover, dispersion constituted a background context that lowered estimates somewhat. These results suggested a model of covariation assessment in which mean estimates were mapped onto a product of power transformations of the axis ratio and dispersion of correlated data. This model accounted for 96% of the variability in mean covariation estimates. 相似文献

Like most scientific fields, social‐personality psychology has experienced an explosion of research related to such central topics as aggression, attraction, gender, group processes, motivation, personality, and persuasion, to name a few. The proliferation of research can be a monster unless it is tamed with the scientific review strategy of meta‐analysis, literally analyses of past analyses that produce a quantitative and empirical history of research on a particular phenomenon. The purpose of this article is to outline the basic process and statistics of meta‐analysis, as they pertain to social‐personality psychology. Meta‐analysis involves: (i) defining the problem under review; (ii) gathering qualified reports and putting their findings and methods into a database, (iii) analyzing that database, and (iv) interpreting the results and reporting them. Use of meta‐analytic strategies has paralleled the knowledge explosion in social‐personality psychology, but must be used and consumed with careful discernment if the cumulated evidence about the social animal, Homo sapiens, is to have maximal value. 相似文献
