Abstract

Two previous studies have demonstrated that stimuli which elicit affect are seen as more familiar than stimuli that elicit little or no affect, but it is not clear why this effect occurs. To begin to understand the effect, the question of whether it is due to improved memory for affect-eliciting stimuli was examined. Recognition judgements were obtained for faces that varied in the strength and valence of affect elicited. Improved memory for affect-eliciting faces was not observed. Instead, the results show a bias to claim recognition for faces that are especially likely to elicit affect, whether or not those faces have been seen before, suggesting that affect can induce a sense of familiarity. The finding of a previous study indicating that both positive and negative affect increase perceived familiarity was replicated. The relevance of the results to an understanding of basic affective processes and processes involved in the assessment of familiarity is discussed. An explanation which can account for the data is proposed.  相似文献

In Experiment I, male rats, previously undernourished by underfeeding their mothers during lactation, weighed less as adults than progeny of mothers underfed during gestation, or than normally-nourished control rats. Daily 16 h food deprivation of the adults induced weight loss and elicited hoarding of food pellets. Deprivation-induced weight losses at criterion for hoarding did not differ significantly among the groups, and the critical weight at which hoarding began was thus significantly lower in the lactationally-undernourished group than in the controls. Thus adult rats, previously undernourished during their suckling period, appear to defend their body weights in a manner similar to controls, although at a lower level. Lactationally-undernourished rats also hoarded significantly fewer pellets than controls. Similar results were obtained when the rats were partially satiated before hoarding tests, suggesting that hoarding scores were unlikely to have been significantly affected by competition with feeding. Foetal undernutrition had weaker, and less consistent effects than lactational undernutrition on the ad libitum weight of the adult, and on the critical weight for hoarding. In Experiment II, severe undernutrition after weaning did not affect adult body weight, the weight loss necessary to induce hoarding, or the number of pellets hoarded. It is concluded that the pre-weaning period is specifically sensitive to the effects of undernutrition on body weight regulation and on hoarding. The data on hoarding do not support the view that a period of undernutrition at any time in early life increases the rat's responsiveness towards food.  相似文献

Health promotion researchers and practitioners have increasingly turned to community-based approaches. Although there has been much work around the diverse understandings of the term in areas such as community psychology and sociology, I am concerned with how such understandings relate directly to community health research and practice. From a discursive perspective ‘community’ is seen as a socially constructed representation that is used variously and pragmatically. However, from a wider view, community can be seen as a matter of embodied practice. This paper draws on social representations theory to examine the shifting constructions of ‘community’, the functional use of those understandings in social life, and the practices that suggest that it is important to attend to their use in particular contexts. Accordingly, the paper argues that meanings of community in the health promotion or public health context must be seen as representations used for specific purposes in particular situations. Furthermore, the broader notion of embodied practice in social life has implications for community participation in health promotion. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
