In order to investigate the hypothesis that dyslexia may result from a failure of intrahemispheric integration between auditory-verbal and visual-verbal processing, a dichotic listening task and a parallel divided visual field task were administered to a group of dyslexic boys between the ages of 8 and 11 years, and a group of normal control subjects individually matched for age and WISC intelligence. The dyslexics were on average over two years retarded in reading and spelling. Dyslexics exhibited a normal right ear advantage on dichotic listening for digits although lesser right ear advantage was related to reading retardation. In the divided visual field task, the normal controls showed a left visual field advantage for digits which it is argued resulted from a failure in fixation linked to reading habits. Within the dyslexic group greater reading deficiency was associated with relative bilateralization for visual verbal processing. The results therefore support the hypothesis. 相似文献

Electrocutaneous stimuli varying in strength (6, 8, 10 V) and frequency (9, 27, 81 Hzj were presented in pairs. Subjects were asked to give a numerical score to represent their perception of overall difference in a pair. To assess their ability to use numbers and their performance on unfamiliar stimuli, no guidance on the nature of the stimuli or the range or scale of the scores was given. Dimensional analysis indicated that perception of differences in one component was influenced by the absolute level of the other component, if this was constant in the pair, or by the difference. Considerable variation among subjects in the nature and extent of this interference effect was observed. Individual differences scaling (INDSCAL) enabled a satisfactory consensus model to be obtained. An empirical relationship expressing the observed twocomponent difference scores in terms of one-component scores was derived. Increasing voltage level diminished perception of frequency difference. Higher frequency levels augmented perception of voltage difference. This relationship is a modification of the combinatorial model proposed by Krantz and Tversky (1975). Individual differences in the combinatorial process are allowed for by application of the subject weightings from the INDSCAL solution. 相似文献

This paper reviews experiments that bear on the issue of binocular summation, the superiority of binocular over monocular viewing on various visual tasks covering studies published since the appearance of a previous review of this literature by Blake and Fox (1973). The experiments are grouped into three main categories—those that deal with the specificity of binocular summation (i.e., the extent to which inputs to the two eyes must coincide spatially and temporally), those that study binocular summation on suprathreshold tasks, and those that correlate binocular summation with other aspects of binocular function. The present article critically examines research on the use of antidepressants in treating agoraphobia. A number of studies have shown certain classes of antidepressant medication, namely tricyclic antidepressants and MAO inhibitors, to have beneficial effects on certain aspects of the agoraphobic syndrome. However, these studies must be interpreted with caution in light of two major methodological shortcomings, i.e. sole reliance on paper and pencil outcome indices and the confounding of the pharmacological effects of the drug with exposure to feared situations. Recent research, aimed at correcting for these methodological problems, seriously question the efficacy of antidepressant pharmacotherapy by itself as a treatment for agoraphobia. Moreover, it is argued that the disadvantages of drug treatments namely agoraphobics' reluctance to take medication, physical side effects and relapse upon withdrawal of the medication, caution against their routine use in clinical practice. 相似文献

American societal norms frequently link alcohol, dating, and sexuality. This cross-sectional study examined the role of alcohol and dating risk factors for sexual assault among a representative sample of female students at a large urban university. Over half of the 1,160 women had experienced some form of sexual assault. Ninety-five percent of these assaults were committed by someone the woman knew and almost half of these assaults involved alcohol consumption by either the man, the woman, or both. Discriminant function analyses indicated that dating, sexual, and misperception experiences and alcohol consumption during these experiences predicted assault group status. Furthermore, alcohol consumption during consensual sex and sexual misperceptions were positively related to alcohol consumption during the sexual assault. The predictors of assault group status were similar for African American and Caucasian women. Theoretical implications are discussed and suggestions are made for combining alcohol and sexual assault prevention programming. 相似文献

WINDSORT: A fully automated technique for collecting sort data for multidimensional scaling analysis
WINDSORT is a microcomputer program that uses an automated sorting procedure to collect the preprocess proximity data commonly analyzed using multidimensional scaling. The traditional manual sorting task is less tedious, more enjoyable, and far easier for subjects to perform than the tasks that are used in alternative data-collection techniques. However, complete automation of the sorting task has not previously been fully successful WINDSORT uses a form of the hierarchical sorting technique which is reputed to yield richer data than single-sort techniques A maximum of 45 stimuli can be scaled using WINDSORT. Research on organizational socialization has usually focused on what organizations do to socialize newcomers or on what newcomers do to socialize themselves. The purpose of this study was to integrate these two perspectives of socialization by investigating the relationships between socialization tactics, newcomers' information acquisition (i.e. feedback and observation) and socialization outcomes. Consistent with previous research, socialization tactics and information acquisition were related to socialization outcomes. Furthermore, institutionalized socialization was positively related to the frequency of newcomers' feedback and observation and the frequency of newcomers' feedback and observation was found to mediate several of the relationships between socialization tactics and outcomes. These results suggest that what newcomers can do to socialize themselves (e.g. acquire information through feedback and observation) is partly a function of what organizations do to socialize newcomers (e.g. the use of specific socialization tactics). The implications of these findings are discussed for the development of a more complete and integrated theory of organizational socialization. 相似文献

One of the most theoretically developed models of organizational socialization is Van Maanen and Schein's (1979) typology of six tactics. Jones' (1986) operationalization of these tactics has been used in most survey studies of the Van Maanen and Schein model. However, questions remain concerning the dimensionality of the operationalization. Self-report data from business school graduates after 4 months (n = 295) and 10 months (n = 222) on the job indicate that: (1) a 6-factor model better approximates the covariance matrix of the socialization items than do competing 1- and 3-factor models, (2) the 6-factor model better predicts certain work adjustment variables than the 3-factor model, and the 3-factor model better predicts certain variables than the 1-factor model, and (3) the collective, formal, sequential, fixed, serial, and investiture tactics are positively interrelated, suggesting a structured program of early work experience. 相似文献
