Making the grade: a pilot investigation of an e-intervention to increase mental health literacy and help-seeking intentions among international university students

ABSTRACT

International students may have less understanding and awareness of mental health issues and appear unlikely to seek help. The purpose of the current study was to construct and evaluate a brief online educational intervention designed to increase mental health literacy (MHL) and help-seeking among international tertiary students studying in Australia. The intervention was tested among 45 international tertiary students (undergraduate and postgraduate), who were randomly allocated to control and intervention conditions. The intervention led to significant improvements in help-seeking attitudes, particularly in stigmatising attitudes. No significant effects were found for MHL or help-seeking intentions. A brief educational intervention can improve help-seeking attitudes among international tertiary students. Future research may focus on establishing optimal intervention dosage.     

Sex Role Stereotyping and the Evaluation of the Performance of Women: Changing Trends

Conditions under which people are prejudiced against women are examined. In two experiments, college students evaluated two professional articles in feminine fields and two in masculine. The author's sex and title were manipulated such that each article was authored in four ways-by a male (Mr.), a female (Miss), a high status male (Dr.) and a high status female (Dr.). It was concluded that prejudice against women may not be as pervasive as demonstrated in previous research but that women in certain "masculine" fields may receive biased evaluations of their work by men if they are thought to be of low professional status.     

Comparing natural and abstract categories: A case study from computer science

In order to address the issue of whether abstract and concrete objects are categorized similarly, this paper looks at how computer scientists categorize the common concepts of their field. Using the methodology of Rosch, Mervis, Gray, Johnson, and Boyes-Braem (1976) and of Rosch and Mervis (1975) to identify the categorizations used by computer scientists, this study found that the categorization phenomena reported for concrete objects are quite general, operating over a wider range than was previously thought.
