Student physical symptoms were related to the social climates of university living groups. A Physical Symptom Risk Scale, a new subscale of the University Residence Environment Scale, which relates consistently to physical symptom complaints for male, female, and coed living groups, was developed. Living groups characterized by high student physical symptoms were perceived by students as low in involvement and support, high in competition, and low in student influence. The results indicate that certain types of social environments may be "high risk" settings in that they support and possibly facilitate complaints of physical symptoms. These settings may be amenable to early "environmental diagnosis," preventive counseling, and change-oriented social systems intervention.  相似文献

Immigration may constitute a family crisis. Because of its lengthy duration, this crisis may be an unrecognized factor in the problem which brings patients into therapy. The immigration crisis may bring an individual into renewed contact with past unresolved emotional issues. It also affects the structure, hierarchies, and values of the family as a system. The therapist who relates only to presenting symptoms and ignores the context of the immigration crisis may lose credibility with patients and miss important therapeutic opportunities. Case studies are given to illustrate the statement.  相似文献

Gudjonsson has conducted a timely and welcome survey of BFMS members, who are to be commended for their frank responses. However, their answers can provide only partial information about the nature, circumstances and consequences of recovered memories. Attention is drawn to features of the way the data are presented that could result in potentially misleading conclusions. The unsystematic inclusion and exclusion of missing values has resulted in inflated frequencies when missing data are excluded from overall proportions. Furthermore, nearly a third of respondents were not sure, or denied, that recovered memories were involved in the accusations. The data are presented with no distinction between these respondents and respondents reporting clear recovered memory accusations. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Discussion
Stresses precipitating the request for psychotherapeutic help, including the psychological conflicts involved in such stress, were assessed by judges listening to taped psychotherapy interviews with 43 outpatients. This paper reports upon the methods devised to record these judgments. Good agreement by two independent judges on the measures employed suggested that psychotherapy interviews selectively focused on limited goals can be valid sources of information about current stressors, conflicts, and modes of behavior, and increase understanding about the resolution of crises.  相似文献

This article argues that there is a partial consonance between the ‘inner-worldly asceticism’ of the fast-growing Protestant movement in Latin America and the economic imperatives of the global capitalism into which Latin America has been progessively incorporated since the 1960s.This consonance stops short of being an unequivocal ‘elective affinity’ since there are also points of tension between the new Protestant ethic and the spirit of contemporary capitalism. It is argued that such consonance as exists arises out of a complex symbiosis rather than a simple one-way causal relationship. The article outlines the range of views among Latin American Pentecostal Protestants about the implications of their faith for economic behaviour, and relates these views to current economic conditions. It suggests that certain Protestant habits and values minimally assist economic survival and can even lead to modest success. Particular attention is paid to recent developments in the Pentecostal movement in Latin America which diverge from the classic Protestant ethic of the West, notably the emergence of an indigenous prosperity gospel and a selective acceptance of consumerism.  相似文献

In previous studies of human newborn sucking, the effects of increasing fluid sweetness and/or volume included a decrease in sucking rate within sucking bursts and, paradoxically, an increase in heart rate. To determine whether the heart rate increase can be attributed to increased sucking amplitude for sweeter fluids, sucking and heart rates of 20 full-term infants were studied. Half sucked for three consecutive 2-min periods, first receiving small drops of water for each suck, then no fluid, then 15% sucrose. The other half experienced the reverse order. The results for sucking and heart rate were consistent with previous studies; sucking rates within bursts were slowest for sucrose and fastest for no fluid. Heart rate was higher for sucrose than for the other fluid conditions, however, only in the water-first group. The heart rate increase was significant on statistical tests which controlled for sucking amplitude as well as for several other motor variables. Sucking amplitude itself varied with fluid sweetness in the water-first group only, in which it was highest for water. There were more total sucks, longer sucking bursts, and less time between successive bursts under the sucrose condition. Multivariate statistics helped establish a set of dependent variables—sucking rate within bursts, total number of sucks, and heart rate—which most parsimoniously describes the effects of fluid sweetness. A hedonic explanation of the response of newborns to sweetness is thus reiterated.  相似文献

Maya symbols associate cultural interpretationsof biological reproduction with gender roles within acosmological model of the natural world. Thesetraditional symbols were used in a ceremony performed to cure the pubescent daughter of a modernizingfamily. She was suffering "ataques de nervios"(nervous attacks, including muscle spasms and loss ofconsciousness) believed to be caused by a delay in the onset of menarche. Analysis of thesymbols relied on multiple approaches that alloweddecoding of ceremonial symbols as references to (1) thegendered pairing of marriage, (2) the socialreproduction of gender through the generations, (3) thereproductive aspects of human bodies as symbols ofinterdependency, and (4) maleness and femaleness asprimary forces of the Maya cosmos. The traditionalsymbols, combined with the teachings of the healer, provided an interpretation of the biological differencesbetween male and female bodies within an overarchingcosmological system. The primary symbols referred explicitly to male and female genitalia andmenstrual blood as symbols for the reproduction ofgender through generations of mothers and daughters, fathers and sons. The ceremony was apparentlyeffective-despite a context of rapid modernization in whichfamily planning, formal education, and new economicopportunities increasingly result in employment of womenoutside the home.  相似文献
