Pastoral counseling with alcoholics and their families

The pastor is often in contact with the alcoholic and his or her family. Providing help to alcoholics and their families is a spiritual, humanistic, and therapeutic challenge. Recent developments have favored a family systems orientation to working with alcoholic families. This orientation acknowledges the family as contributor to maintaining alcoholic behavior and includes the family in treatment. Specific family systems concepts are discussed and how they relate to the dysfunctional unit which houses an alcoholic. Implications for pastors and specific role definitions are explored. Krebs' therapeutic model is expanded to: 1) evaluate, 2) support, 3) refer, and 4) support, as appropriate for the pastor working with alcoholics and their families.     

A case of cortical deafness: Clinical and electrophysiological data

A patient suffering from a primary myocardiopathy is suddenly no longer able to recognize speech and environmental sounds, in spite of good peripheral hearing; he remains able to speak, read, and write. The C.T. scan shows lesions involving both supratemporal planes. The cortical sensory deficit documented by the absence of late acoustic evoked potentials leads to a diagnosis of cortical deafness rather than of auditory agnosia.

Linear representation of temporal location and Stevens’s law

Ss were asked to indicate points 1 week, 7 months, 3 years, and 9 years in the past and future on two time lines representing birth to present and present to death. Data for 90 college-age Ss fit a psychophysical power function following Stevens’s law. with negatively accelerated growth indicating proportionately greater linear representation of periods nearer to the present. Variability was greater for the representations of the future than of the past, with monotonic increases in variability as distance from the present increased.     

Electroencephalographic and blood pressure correlates of operantly conditioned heart rate in the restrained monkey

Each of four monkeys was trained to slow its heart rate and to speed its heart rate. Mean blood pressure was positively correlated with heart rate during speeding and during slowing. These correlations increased from early training to late training for all animals during slowing; however, they did not change during speeding. High voltage in the 8–14 Hz band of the EEG was correlated negatively with heart rate; however, the correlations were insignificant or low. The correlations between EEG changes and heart rate changes increased (became more negative) during the late phase of slow training but did not change reliably during speeding training. Baseline levels in all physiological functions changed as a function of stage of training. Response patterns during escape behavior indicate dissociation of heart rate and blood pressure, whereas response patterns during avoidance behavior show correlation of heart rate and blood pressure. The findings indicate that the physiological effects of heart rate slowing and heart rate speeding are different and not merely mirror images of one another.     

Adaptation to displaced vision: Reafference is a special case of the cue-discrepancy hypothesis

Subjects were exposed to a prismatically displaced view of their actively-moved right hand which was optically “stopped”; they achieved as much adaptation in this condition as in one in which they were allowed full “reafferent” stimulation. This provides further evidence against Held's “reafference“ hypothesis.
