Vibrotactile vigilance behavior was examined for the effects on signal detection performance of placing costs on misses and false detections and a positive value on the correct detection of a signal. Analyses over time showing that the frequencies of correct detection and false detection of signals decreased, while response times increased, indicated that increased costs for misses and false alarms lead to poorer correct detection performance, while the value placed on the correct detection of a signal had little effect. The d’ statistic of signal detection theory was invariant with both signal costs and time, while β varied with both factors.These results imply that the performance decrement during a vigil was due to an increased strictness in the criterion (β) the S set for deciding whether or not a signal was present. The cost factors were effective in manipulating performance during the watch by causing changes in the S’s decision criteria. Findings from this study clearly support those predicted by the “Decision Theory” of Swets, Tanner, and Birdsall (1961); this is suggested as perhaps being the best available basis for a theory of vigilance at this time. 相似文献

The essay examines the argument advanced by E.D. Hirsch, Jr., for instituting ‘cultural literacy’ as a fundamental priority of schools. A number of confusions and equivocations in Hirsch's reasoning are identified, and the propensity of his project to indoctrinate is exposed. Among the features of Hirsch's argument shown to be troubling are his shifting construal of ‘language’, his inconsistency about the requirements of cultural literacy, and his uncritical relation to traditional images of the American past and present. How can we explain that an assertion on something perceived can be understood in the same manner by somebody who cannot perceive that scene? This problem bases the interest in computational linguistics in how listener modeling could possibly be harmonized with reference semantics. Mental images substituting real perception appear as a way out. The architecture of the listener model has to be adapted to the creation and use of such pictorial data structures. Furthermore, the relation between the latter and a verbal (i. e., propositional) representation must be understood. The Children's Depression Index (CDI) was administered to a group of 304 regular school students in Grades 3–12. It was found that 21% of the students reported mild to moderate levels and 7% reported severe levels of depression. Females reported more overall depression than did males. Specific CDI items selected more frequently by females than by males supports previous work suggesting that females tend to internalize difficulties whereas males are more likely to externalize problems. There were no age differences associated with overall depression; however, there were some developmental differences in specific items cited.
