ABSTRACTAyatollah Khomeini's 1989 fatwa against Salman Rushdie cemented Iran's space within Western discourses surrounding blasphemy and Islam. The fatwa has earned its place within the polarizing debate between free speech and religious tolerance, which fundamentally serves the political ambitions of those involved. This article therefore argues that, in order to understand accusations of blasphemy in Iran, one must address the political concerns in which the accusation takes place since these reveal Iran's tendency towards pragmatic dogma – the practice of meeting the needs of the state in a way that accords with its religious ideology. The responses of Iranian officials to the Charlie Hebdo killings in 2015 provide a useful case study for the analysis of this pragmatic dogma, since the Islamic Republic pursued a different approach to the Charlie Hebdo “blasphemy” from that which it had followed with Rushdie. Instead of condoning the killings, Iran's political and religious elite chose to condemn the actions of both the cartoonists and the gunmen, without outlining a punishment. The article will argue that this case demonstrates many of the continuing themes in Iran's approach to blasphemy, since the Charlie Hebdo cartoons have largely been used to reinforce the Islamic Republic's overall worldview. 相似文献

Within this submission the authors share their experiences as a blended research team with Aboriginal community and mainstream
academic researchers. The team has collaborated since 2004 on several externally funded research projects. Initially, the
team engaged in research through mainstream methodologies. In the process, the community co-researchers and participants were
silenced through mainstream cultural practices that were unfamiliar and meaningless in Wikwemikong culture. More recently,
the team has employed a community conceived de-colonizing methodology, developed from within Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve.
Within this submission, the authors will highlight their initial cultural missteps, followed by more recently utilized culturally
relevant approaches. It is proposed that what might be ethically sound research with mainstream participants and among mainstream
researchers can silence and subvert practices among those from marginalized groups/cultures. Provisional suggestions are offered

The ability to automatically and implicitly detect complex and noisy regularities in the environment is a fundamental aspect of human cognition. Despite considerable interest in implicit processes, few researchers have conceptualized implicit learning as an ability with meaningful individual differences. Instead, various researchers (e.g., Reber, 1993; Stanovich, 2009) have suggested that individual differences in implicit learning are minimal relative to individual differences in explicit learning. In the current study of English 16–17 year old students, we investigated the association of individual differences in implicit learning with a variety of cognitive and personality variables. Consistent with prior research and theorizing, implicit learning, as measured by a probabilistic sequence learning task, was more weakly related to psychometric intelligence than was explicit associative learning, and was unrelated to working memory. Structural equation modeling revealed that implicit learning was independently related to two components of psychometric intelligence: verbal analogical reasoning and processing speed. Implicit learning was also independently related to academic performance on two foreign language exams (French, German). Further, implicit learning was significantly associated with aspects of self-reported personality, including intuition, Openness to Experience, and impulsivity. We discuss the implications of implicit learning as an ability for dual-process theories of cognition, intelligence, personality, skill learning, complex cognition, and language acquisition. 相似文献

The attentional blink refers to the finding that the 2nd of 2 targets embedded in a stream of rapidly presented distractors is often missed. Whereas most theories of the attentional blink focus on limited-capacity processes that occur after target selection, the present work investigates the selection process itself. Identifying a target letter caused an attentional blink for the enumeration of subsequent dot patterns, but this blink was reduced when the dots shared their color with the target letter. In contrast, performance worsened when the color of the dots matched that of the remaining distractors in the stream. Similarity between the targets also affected competition between different sets of dots presented simultaneously within a single display. The authors conclude that the selection of targets from a rapid serial visual presentation stream is mediated by both excitatory and inhibitory attentional control mechanisms. 相似文献

Small numbers of items can be enumerated rapidly and accurately via a process termedsubitizing. In two experiments, we examined the effect of target color heterogeneity on subitizing efficiency. In contrast to the findings of Puts and de Weert (1997), we found that observers were no less efficient at subitizing displays containing red and green items than they were at subitizing displays of a single color. We propose that these findings are consistent with subitization operating on items represented within a location master map that codes where objects are but not what they are. The data are discussed in relation to recent findings concerning the detection of single-feature targets and the functional architecture of early visual processing. 相似文献
