Media influences on body image and disordered eating among indigenous adolescent Australians 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
There has been no previous investigation of body image concerns and body change strategies among indigenous Australians. This study was designed to investigate the level of body satisfaction, body change strategies, and perceived media messages about body change strategies among 50 indigenous (25 males, 25 females) and 50 non-indigenous (25 males, 25 females) Australian adolescents (mean age 14.05, SD = 1.05). Consistent with past studies, girls were more likely to be dissatisfied with their weight and engage in strategies to lose weight. However, contrary to expectations, indigenous adolescents engaged in more strategies to lose weight, increase weight, and increase muscles than did non-indigenous adolescents, despite perceiving fewer media messages about losing weight. Additional factors that may explain the findings and the need for further research with different cultural groups are highlighted. 相似文献

The standard 2-4-6 task requires discovery of a single rule and produces success rates of about 20%, whereas the dual-goal (DG) version requests discovery of two complementary rules and elevates success to over 60%. The experiment examined two explanations of DG superiority: Evans' (1989) positivity-bias account, and Wharton, Cheng, and Wickens' (1993) goal-complementarity theory. Two DG conditions were employed that varied the linguistic labelling of rules (either positively labelled Dax vs. Med, or mixed-valence “fits” vs. “does not fit”). Solution-success results supported the goal-complementarity theory since facilitation arose in both DG conditions relative to single-goal tasks, irrespective of the linguistic labelling of hypotheses. DG instructions also altered quantitative and qualitative aspects of hypothesis-testing behaviour, and analyses revealed the novel result that the production of at least a single descending triple mediates between DG instructions and task success. We propose that the identification of an appropriate contrast class that delimits the scope of complementary rules may be facilitated through the generation of a descending instance. Overall, our findings can best be accommodated by Oaksford and Chater's (1994) iterative counterfactual model of hypotheses testing, which can readily subsume key elements of the goal-complementarity theory. 相似文献

This paper reports two experiments concerned with the interaction of response and target factors in a coincident timing situation. Coincident timing involves executing a response to intercept a moving target. The target response relationship was manipulated in the first experiment by providing some targets with no structure (linear path) and others containing 1 and 2 bounce points. In the second experiment, responses required 0, 1, or 2 reversals in direction. The results provide tentative support for the notion that structure in the target path could be linked to the key temporal response dynamics for improved performance consistency, and that subjects may alter their response structure to incorporate this linkage. This can be further extended to the advantage of simply moving while perceiving movement. Assumptions about the nature of career development are changing in the face of organisational and technical change in the workplace. Individuals are now less likely to experience secure, lifelong employment, and instead will need to face the process of career review and change with greater frequency. They will therefore need to be skilled in managing their careers effectively. Open-learning approaches to career management and guidance have until recently been comparatively little used and yet they offer the potential for action-oriented career planning, provide a career decision framework for learners, and encourage increased ownership of the career management process by the individual taking part. They can be used in educational and commercial settings to facilitate both the processes of initial career choice and those of career development and progression. From the perspective of the careers practitioner, they offer a high-volume, but not necessarily low-cost, approach to the delivery of career programmes. We evaluated a method for training infants to cue their mothers on the need to eliminate. The program consisted of three phases: Phase I was directed at establishing a dose temporal relationship between body signals (straining) and subsequent defecations on the potty; Phase II was designed to establish a relationship between prompted and unprompted potty reaching/grabbing responses and eliminations (defecations and urinations) on the potty; and Phase III served to establish unprompted potty reaching/grabbing responses as reliable precursors of eliminations. Previous work has shown that detectability of motion is better when the observer knows ahead of time the direction of that motion (“certainty”) than when he does not know the direction (“uncertainty”). We now report attempts to reduce this performance decrement associated with direction uncertainty. In these experiments, a briefly flashed, oriented line cued the observer to the direction of motion that might occur. When the cue appeared before the moving target, detectability increased; when the cue appeared after the moving target, performance dropped below that for no cue at all. In addition, we examined the effect of cue reliability, varying the relation between cue orientation and actual direction of target motion. The more accurate the cue is, the larger the performance increment. When the cue indicated a direction more than 90 deg from the actual target direction, performance was worse than when there was no cue. Three studies relating perception of motion to stimulus uncertainty are reported. Generally, detectability declines when the observer is uncertain about the direction in which a target will move, but the visibility loss associated with direction uncertainty can be attenuated if the observer has adequate practice. This attenuation seems to depend upon the observer's ability to switch among directionally selective visual mechanisms in an adaptive fashion. Forty undergraduate students participated in an experiment designed to investigate the hypothesis that prior exposure to nonhostile humor would markedly reduce the level of aggression directed by angry individuals against the person who had previously provoked them. In order to examine this suggestion, subjects were first angered or not angered by a confederate of the experimenter, then exposed to either humorous cartoons or nonhumorous pictures, and finally provided with an opportunity to aggress against this individual by means of electric shock. Results indicated that exposure to the nonhostile cartoons significantly reduced the duration of the shocks delivered to the confederate by subjects in the angry condition, but failed to influence the level of aggression demonstrated by subjects in the nonangry group. These findings were discussed in terms of the elicitation, by the cartoons, of responses and emotional states incompatible with anger or overt aggression. Possible implications of the aggression-inhibiting influence of humor for the prevention and control of human violence were also considered. 相似文献

Serotonin (5HT)-induced facilitation of synaptic transmission from tail sensory neurons (SNs) to motor neurons (MNs) in the marine mollusc Aplysia provides a cellular model of short- and long-term memory for behavioral sensitization of the tail withdrawal reflex. Synaptic facilitation at these synapses occurs in three temporal phases: short-term (STF, lasting minutes), intermediate-term (ITF, lasting more than an hour), and long-term (LTF, lasting >24 hr). STF, ITF, and LTF differ in their induction requirements: A single brief exposure of 5HT induces STF, whereas five applications are required for ITF and LTF.
