A procedure to teach four mild and moderately retarded persons to sum the value of coin combinations was tested. Subjects were first taught to count a single target coin, and then to sum that coin in combination with coins previously trained. Five American coins and various combinations were trained. Modelling, modelling with subject participation, and independent counting by the subject constituted the training sequence. The subjects improved from a mean pretest score of 29% to 92% correct at posttest. A four-week followup score showed a mean of 79% correct. A multiple-baseline design suggested that improvement in coin-counting performance occurred only after the coin was trained. The results indicate that this procedure has potential for teaching the retarded to sum combinations of coins in 5 to 6 hr of instruction.  相似文献

The relations between scores on statistically derived behavior problem syndromes and DSM-III diagnoses were examined for 270 clinically referred children aged 6 through 16. Each child's parent completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) and was administered the NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC)-a structured interview covering DSM-III diagnostic criteria. Numerous behavior problems scales scored from the CBCL were significantly related to one or more diagnoses. The strongest relations were between scores on the Hyperactive, Delinquent, and Depressed scales and diagnoses of Attention Deficit Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and Depression/Dysthymia, respectively. This convergence supports the validity of some syndromal constructs common to both assessment paradigms.This research was supported in part by NIMH grant no. MH37372 and by NIMH contract no. After discussion of some theoretical speculations concerning the nature of the Rorschach process, two experimental manipulations of the Rorschach task are presented. Three groups of normal (n = 6) and schizophrenic subjects (7 paranoid and 7 nonparanoid) participated. Their mean age was 30.7 yr. In the first experimental version of the Rorschach, simplified inkblots (sections of the standard cards) were used to verify the influence of stimulus complexity on response for the three groups. In the second, an experimental version of the Rorschach task was created to highlight the influence of the selection process among different associations to blots. To this end, a list including responses both of positive and negative form quality to each card, was provided each subject. Data are discussed, highlighting the minimal differences obtained by the experimental manipulations and relating these to theoretical speculations.  相似文献

A number of experiments have demonstrated that the learning of braille is affected by a variety of factors. The present experiment was carried out to determine the relative importance of these variables for braille learning. The variables were stimulus set discriminability (high, low), study modality (visual, haptic), test modality (visual, haptic), study size (large vs standard braille cell), test size (large vs standard braille cell), study rate (5 or 10 seconds per item), and test rate (5 or 10 seconds per item). The results showed that study modality, stimulus set discriminability, and test modality were the variables mainly responsible for differences in performance during acquisition. Some practical and theoretical implications of these results are considered.  相似文献

Albert Schweitzer (1875–1965) was a medical missionary, theologian, philosopher, and musician and the only individual physician to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. His humanitar-ianism had a profound philosophical-religious basis, embodied in the concepts of ethical mysticism and reverence for life. This paper outlines the relevance of Schweitzer's career to medical education and international health. The growing role of Western physicians in international health and in the prevention of nuclear war (and its medical consequences) is consistent with Schweitzer's active and universalist ethical principles aimed at the alleviation of the suffering shared by mankind. The notion of a natural numbers object in a monoidal category is defined and it is shown that the theory of primitive recursive functions can be developed. This is done by considering the category of cocommutative comonoids which is cartesian, and where the theory of natural numbers objects is well developed. A number of examples illustrate the usefulness of the concept.This work was partially carried out while both authors were guests of McGill University and while the second author was a guest of Dalhousie University.
