In this paper we study the definability and decidability of binary predicates for time granularity in monadic languages interpreted over finitely and infinitely layered structures. We focus our attention on the equi-level (respectively equi-column) predicate constraining two time points to belong to the same layer (respectively column) and on the horizontal (respectively vertical) successor predicate relating a time point to its successor within a given layer (respectively column). We give a number of positive and negative results by reduction to/from a wide spectrum of decidable/undecidable problems.  相似文献

Inhibitory interneurons are coupled by electrical and inhibitory synapses and exert a powerful control of the discharges of principal cells. In this paper, the transmission properties of excitatory synaptic inputs by a network of interneurons, are studied by using a computational approach. It is shown that both the rise and decay time constants, describing the time course of the excitatory synaptic inputs, have a strong effect on the output jitter of the fired spikes. Similar results were found by changing the values of the other parameters describing the network. Lastly, it is shown that the presence of the electrical coupling between interneurons confers to the network the capability of transmitting, with less temporal spread, the timing information contained in its inputs.  相似文献

Expanding on Jung’s use of the role of the superior and inferior functions, Angelo Spoto advances a new typological model based on ‘whole type’ that utilizes a typological perspective on the archetypal Self. In this new model four cognitive modes taking superior positions are developed in the first half of life and four cognitive modes taking inferior positions are encountered in the second half of life. This model indicates that type development and type dynamics take place through the holding of the tension of opposites between superior and inferior functions, helped by the transcendent function operating differently in the first and second halves of life. Specifically, in the first half of life, the transcendent function produces a tertium that moves typological development along to consolidate an ego-pattern. In the second half of life, the transcendent function takes the individual into encounters having to do with an appreciation of sacrifice, transformation, and symbol-making, as the personality advances towards a greater awareness of wholeness, by way of the inferiors.  相似文献

In the present experiments, we attempted to evaluate the modification of the strength of the Poggendorff illusion as a function of the different orientation of a parallel-line texture filling the space between the vertical lines. In Experiment 1, the standard version of the Poggendorff configuration was tested against four different parallel-line textures oriented at 0°, 45°,90°, and 135° with respect to the obliques. The results showed that the illusory effect was a linear function of the progressive discrepancy between the angle of the lines of the texture and that of the obliques. In Experiment 2, we tested the same textures used in Experiment 1 after the elimination of the two vertical lines. The data obtained approximated a linear function, as in the previous experiment, but the alignment errors were consistently lower. The statistical analysis performed on the data of all eight experimental conditions shows that both factors—texture and presence/absence of verticals—were significant, but most of the effect was due to the texture factor. The results may be interpreted through the “perceptual compromise hypothesis,” originally proposed for the bisection forms of the Poggendorff illusion, but with important modifications. The data are also discussed in terms of their implications for other theories proposed for the Poggendorff illusion.  相似文献

There is a history of interest in appraisal instruments as a means of improving the accuracy of ratings. But cognitive models have suggested an alternative role for instrumentation. The present study involved 125 subjects in an attempt to examine whether the format of the instrument, and the timing of its introduction, might influence cognitive processing of performance information and, in turn, recall and rating accuracy. Subjects received either a task- or trait-based instrument, either before observing performance, before a recall task, or before ratings. Both the type of scale and the timing of its introduction affected the organization of information in memory which, in turn, was related to recall accuracy. Rater judgment processes were affected as well. Implications for future research, and especially practice, are discussed.  相似文献

Precocial copulation in 2-wk.-old male chicks, described behaviorally as free mount, tread, posterior contact, waggle, peek, and seize, was developed through hand-training experience and androgen treatment. Crystalline progesterone was then implanted in various forebrain or midbrain regions. Results indicated that progesterone inhibited copulatory behavior when placed in the periventricular areas of the preoptic-hypothalamic continuum. Progesterone implants in the preoptic lateral forebrain bundle regions also suppressed precocial copulation. Forebrain implants of cholesterol did not result in copulatory inhibition. The suppression of copulatory behavior was not accompanied by loss of weight or deficits in general activity or comb growth. These data indicate that brain regions responsible for progesterone-induced copulatory inhibition are similar in neuroanatomical distribution to those involved in testosterone-induced copulatory activation.  相似文献

This series of experiments examined zero-delay matching-to-sample performance in pigeons with element and compound sample stimuli. In Experiment 1, compound sample stimuli were consistently followed by compound comparison stimuli and matching accuracy during testing was equivalent to element sample-element comparison trials on the color dimension. In Experiment 2, element comparisons suddenly introduced following compound samples produced a decrement on the line dimension only. Subsequent testing at various sample durations revealed higher matching accuracy following element samples than following compound samples on both the color and line-tilt dimensions. Experiment 3 replicated the results of Experiments 1 and 2 and also demonstrated that the superiority of element over compound matching performance remains constant over the sample durations tested. In Experiment 4 testing at sample durations up to 30 sec produced an overall decrement in matching performance, but again the element vs compound matching difference remained constant. The stimulus-generalization decrement hypothesis provided a better explanation of these results than either the information-overload hypothesis or the rule hypothesis.  相似文献

Some theoretical and applied implications of individual differences in nonverbal expressiveness were investigated in a medical setting. In Study I, the abilities of 21 physicians to express different emotions through voice tone were assessed and related to physician personality and to actual patient ratings of the physician. Study II replicated Study I using visual as well as vocal cues (i.e., videotapes) of a new sample of physicians, and added a study of physician greetings. It was found that: (1) Aspects of expressive ability were reliably correlated with a cluster of personality traits, thus supporting the notion that nonverbal affective style may be a window to inner dispositions; and (2) expressive ability was related to patient satisfaction with the interpersonal manner of their physicians and to the judged likeability of the physician's greeting, thus providing evidence for the importance of this ability for social interaction.  相似文献

The school counselors struggle for role identity still continues. The counselor's commitment to counseling pupils is being questioned by those with a sociological view of the counselor's role. Several writers suggest that the counselor's role be changed so that the counselor will function as a “cultural architect” or “social engineer.” The main thesis of this article is that the facilitation of human potentiality calls for a complementary approach to the resolution of school and pupil problems and not the diminution and prostitution of one role for another. It is proposed that a new position be created in our schools—that of a school sociologist.  相似文献
