The main objective of this study is to investigate the abstract-concrete dichotomy by introducing a new variable: the mode
of acquisition (MoA) of a concept. MoA refers to the way in which concepts are acquired: through experience, through language,
or through both. We asked 250 participants to rate 417 words on seven dimensions: age of acquisition, concreteness, familiarity,
context availability, imageability, abstractness, and MoA. The data were analyzed by considering MoA ratings and their relationship
with the other psycholinguistic variables. Distributions for concreteness, abstractness, and MoA ratings indicate that they
are qualitatively different. A partial correlation analysis revealed that MoA is an independent predictor of concreteness
or abstractness, and a hierarchical multiple regression analysis confirmed MoA as being a valid predictor of abstractness.
Strong correlations with measures for the English translation equivalents in the MRC database confirmed the reliability of

The present four-wave longitudinal study, conducted in Finland, investigated the extent to which life satisfaction changed
among adolescents during the transition from comprehensive school to an academic or a vocational track. The participants were
15-year-old adolescents (Time 1: N = 687, Time 2: N = 642, Time 3: N = 818, Time 4: N = 749) who filled in the Diener et al. (J Pers Assess 49: 71–75, 1985). Satisfaction With Life Scale twice during their final term of comprehensive school and twice after the transition either
to upper secondary or vocational education. At comprehensive school they reported their academic achievement, expected educational
track, educational aspirations, self-esteem, and background information, while at the last measurement point they reported
their school engagement and attained educational track. Latent Growth Modeling showed, first, that life satisfaction increased
during the educational transition. Second, the higher the adolescents’ academic achievement and self-esteem, the higher the
level of their life satisfaction during the transition. Third, among girls, the lower their self-esteem, the more their life
satisfaction increased during the educational transition. Fourth, among both boys and girls, a high level of life satisfaction
during the transition predicted academic track and school engagement at the last measurement point. Finally, among girls,
an increase in life satisfaction during the transition predicted school engagement and an academic track. The results support
the stage-environment fit theory according to which the nature of the educational environment is more important than the transition
per se for changes in adolescents’ life satisfaction (see Eccles and Midgley in Research on motivation in education. Academic

Children with autism spectrum disorder process many perceptual and social events differently from typically developing children,
suggesting that they may also form and recognize categories differently. We used a dot pattern categorization task and prototype
comparison modeling to compare categorical processing in children with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder and matched
typical controls. We were interested in whether there were differences in how children with autism use average similarity
information about a category to make decisions. During testing, the group with autism spectrum disorder endorsed prototypes
less and was seemingly less sensitive to differences between to-be-categorized items and the prototype. The findings suggest
that individuals with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder are less likely to use overall average similarity when forming
categories or making categorical decisions. Such differences in category formation and use may negatively impact processing

This paper has two objectives. The first is to formulate a critique of present-day cognitive linguistics (CL) concerning the
inner workings of the cognitive system during language use, and the second is to put forward an alternative account that is
inspired by the phenomenology of Merleau-Ponty. Due to its third-person methodology, CL views language use essentially as
a problem-solving activity, as coping with two subproblems: the problem of minimum and maximum, which consists in selecting
the appropriate expression out of an unlimited multitude of possibilities, and the problem of the underdetermination of signification.
This approach presupposes a notion of an isolated subject and a representationalist view of perception. We defend an alternative
view of man's relation to the world in which intersubjectivity is constitutive of embodied subjectivity and which exchanges
the representationalist view of perception for a direct nonrepresentationalism. We describe the ensuing view of linguistic
action as intra- and interpersonal “all-at-onceness.” This approach dismisses the two subproblems CL implicitly identifies
as constitutive of language use. The first is countered by rethinking what it means to be a situated speaking subject and
results in the concept of “style.” The second is tackled by opposing the concept of “overdetermination” to CL's notion of

In various publications, Stanley Cavell and Stanley Rosen have emphasized the philosophical importance of what they both call
“the ordinary.” They both contrast their recovery of “the ordinary” with traditional philosophy, including the phenomenological
philosophy of Edmund Husserl. In this paper, I address Rosen’s claims in particular. I argue that Rosen turns the real situation
on its head. Contra Rosen, it is not the case that the employment of Husserl’s epoché distorts the authentic voice of “the” ordinary—a voice
that is clearly audible only from within everyday life. For (pace both Cavell and Rosen) there is no single “voice” of the ordinary: There are many such “voices,” not all of which are to be relied upon. Therefore, if we want to achieve
an adequate grasp of ordinary experience, and Rosen does want this, we precisely need the epoché to curtail the misleading
messages of certain other “voices of the ordinary.” Moreover, and somewhat surprisingly, this positive evaluation of the Husserlian
epoché finds support in Heidegger’s writings from the twenties. I argue that Heidegger, too, believed that the epoché was
an indispensable tool for the philosophical attempt to capture ordinary experience. 相似文献

Issues of responsibility in the world of nanotechnology are becoming explicit with the emergence of a discourse on ‘responsible
development’ of nanoscience and nanotechnologies. Much of this discourse centres on the ambivalences of nanotechnology and
of promising technology in general. Actors must find means of dealing with these ambivalences. Actors’ actions and responses
to ambivalence are shaped by their position and context, along with strategic games they are involved in, together with other
actors. A number of interviews were conducted with industrial actors with the aim of uncovering their ethical stances towards
responsible development of nanotechnology. The data shows that standard repertoires of justification of nanotechnological
development were used. Thus, the industrial actors fell back on their position and associated responsibilities. Such responses
reinforce a division of moral labour in which industrial actors and scientists can focus on the progress of science and technology,
while other actors, such as NGOs, are expected to take care of broader considerations, such as ethical and social issues. 相似文献

This paper develops the thesis that personal identity is neither to be taken in terms of an unchanging self-sufficient ‘substance’
nor in terms of selfhood ‘without substance,’ i.e. as fluctuating processes of pure relationality and subject-less activity.
Instead, identity is taken as self-transformation that is bound to particular embodied individuals and surpasses them as individuated entities. The paper is structured in three parts. Part I describes the experiential givenness
of conflicts that support our sense of self-transformation. While the first part develops an inter-subjective topography of
emotional movements, the second part pays attention to their temporal dimension. We work with conflicts and get transformed
by them also in the way we remember them. Part II focuses on the process of self-understanding that accompanies conflicts
and their metamorphosis in memory. Part III compares and discusses different models of a ‘relational ontology’ of the person,
which question the idea that we are defined only by how we define ourselves—just as they question the idea that one’s identity

Three decades after their publication, Bloom and Fischler’s (1980) sentence completion norms continue to demonstrate widespread
utility. The aim of the present study was to extend this contribution by expanding the existing database of high-constraint,
high cloze probability sentences. Using the criteria established by Bloom and Fischler, we constructed 398 new sentences and
presented these along with 100 sentences from their original list to be normed using a sample of 400 participants. Of the
498 sentences presented, 400 met criteria for high cloze probability—that is, .67 or higher probability of being completed
by a specific single word. Of these, 321 sentences were from the new set and an additional 79 were from Bloom and Fischler’s
set. A high degree of correspondence was observed between responses obtained by Bloom and Fischler for their high-constraint
set. A second experiment utilized an N400 event-related potential paradigm to provide further validation of the contextual
constraint for the newly generated set. As expected, N400 amplitude was greater for sentences that violated contextual expectancy
by ending in a word other than the newly established completion norm. Sentence completion norms are frequently used in cognitive
research, and this larger database of high cloze probability sentences is expected to be of benefit to the research community

The present study examined the effects of illness representation, perceived quality of information provided by the health-care
professional, and perceived social support on the depressive symptoms of the caregivers of children with leukemia. The sample
was composed of 71 caregivers of children with leukemia living in Turkey. The obtained data were analyzed by path analysis.
The results show that caregivers of children with leukemia experience higher levels of depressive symptoms when they have
negative illness representation and lower levels of depressive symptoms when they perceive higher levels of social support.
Moreover, they perceive higher social support when they perceive high quality of information provided by health-care professionals.
It can be suggested that intervention programs which aim to increase caregivers’ social support and change their illness representation
in a positive way would be helpful for the caregivers showing depressive symptoms. 相似文献
